Neonoen, [a] commonly stylized as NeonoeN, is a Montenegrin rock band formed in 2012 in Podgorica. They were initially selected to represent Montenegro in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with the song "Clickbait", but later withdrew due to a controversy over having previously performed their song in June 2023.

History

Neonoen, founded in Podgorica in early 2012 under the name Neon, is the result of the collaboration between singer Marko Vukčević and guitarist Ilija Pejović. After the passage of several other musicians, the lineup was definitively solidified with the recruitment of bassist Filip Vulanović and drummer Milan Vujović. [1] [2]

Despite their long activity on the local music scene, Neon released their debut single "Ti i ja solo" in 2018, finally starting to write original songs. [2] [3] In the same year, they were guests on the RTCG music program Obrati pažnju, where they performed some covers of famous songs, such as Lonely Boy by The Black Keys, "Za laku noć" by Perper, and "Još ne sviće rujna zora", a Montenegrin patriotic song. [4] About three years later, in 2022, they collaborated with Ivan Dečak, frontman of the Croatian band Vatra, for the song "Daleko odavde". [2] [5] [6]

In 2023, on the occasion of their tenth anniversary, Neon decided to change their name to Neonoen in order to avoid confusion with other bands both nationally and internationally. [1] [2] This change was accompanied by the production of two unreleased singles, which were premiered at the Zabjelo Cultural Festival. [2] With the release of the song "Dok ne udahnem te", the band announced that they are working on their first album, which is scheduled to be released in 2024. [1]

On 10 October 2024, Neonoen's participation in Montesong 2024 was made official, an event dedicated to the selection of the Montenegrin representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, where they sang the song Clickbait. [7] On 27 November, during the final of the contest, the group triumphed after obtaining second place from both the jury and the televote, thus securing the right to represent Montenegro on the Eurovision stage in Basel. [8]

Following the final of Montesong, it emerged that Neonoen had performed "Clickbait" in June 2023 at a music festival in Zabjelo, which was a breach of the rules of both Montesong and the Eurovision Song Contest. [9] On 4 December 2024, the band announced their withdrawal as Montenegro's representative in the contest. [10]

Musical style

In an interview for the publication All About The Rock, Marko Vukčević described the band's music as indie rock containing elements of blues, rock, hard rock, heavy metal, punk rock, and pop. [1]

Montenegro has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 12 times since its debut in 2007. The Montenegrin participant broadcaster in the contest is Radio and Television of Montenegro (RTCG).

Serbia and Montenegro was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 with the song "Zauvijek moja" (Заувијек моја), composed by Slaven Knezović, with lyrics by written by Milan Perić, and performed by the band No Name. The Serbian-Montenegrin participant broadcaster, Udruženje javnih radija i televizija (UJRT), organised the national final Evropesma-Europjesma 2005 in order to select its entry for the contest. Serbian Radio-televizija Srbije (RTS) and Montenegrin Radio-televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) each submitted twelve entries from their respective selections Beovizija 2005 and Montevizija 2005 with twenty-four entries in total competing in the national final on 4 March 2005. "Zauvijek moja" performed by No Name was selected as the winner following the combination of votes from an eight-member jury panel and a public televote.

Montenegro was represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2007 with the song "'Ajde, kroči" ('Ајде, крочи), composed by Slaven Knezović, with lyrics by Milan Perić, and performed by Stevan Faddy. The Montenegrin participating broadcaster, Radio i Televizija Crne Gore (RTCG), organised the national final MontenegroSong 2007 in order to select its entry for the contest. This was the first-ever entry from independent Montenegro in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 with the song "Zauvijek volim te" written by Grigor Koprov and Ognen Nedelkovski. The song was performed by Stefan Filipović. The Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) organised the national final MontenegroSong 2008 in order to select the Montenegrin representative for the 2008 contest in Belgrade, Serbia. Six artists competed in the national final on 27 January 2008 where public televoting selected Stefan Filipović as the winner with 3,325 votes. His song, "Zauvijek volim te", was internally selected and presented to the public in a television special on 8 March 2008.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2009 with the song "Just Get Out of My Life" written by Ralph Siegel, Bernd Meinunger and José Juan Santana Rodríguez. The song was performed by Andrea Demirović, who was internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2009 contest in Moscow, Russia. Andrea Demirović was announced as the Montenegrin representative on 23 January 2009, while her song, "Just Get Out of My Life", was presented to the public on the same day. This was the first time that the Montenegrin song was performed entirely in the English language at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 with the song "Euro Neuro" written and performed by Rambo Amadeus, who were internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2012 contest in Baku, Azerbaijan. In November 2011, RTCG announced that they would be returning to the Eurovision Song Contest after a two-year absence following their withdrawal in 2010 due to financial difficulties. Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 with the song "Moj svijet" written by Sergej Ćetković and Emina Sandal. The song was performed by Sergej Ćetković, who was internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2014 contest in Copenhagen, Denmark. Sergej Ćetković was announced as the Montenegrin representative on 19 November 2013, while his song, "Moj svijet", was presented to the public at a press conference on 9 March 2014.

Montenegro debuted at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2014, which was held in Marsa, Malta. Prior to its debut as an independent nation, Montenegro participated at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2005 as part of Serbia and Montenegro. After taking part in the 2014 and 2015 contests, the nation has not returned to the contest.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with the song "The Real Thing" written by Srđan Sekulović Skansi, Maro Market and Luka Vojvodić. The song was performed by the band Highway, which were internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2016 contest in Stockholm, Sweden. Highway was announced as the Montenegrin representative on 2 October 2015, while their song, "The Real Thing", was presented to the public in a television special titled U susret Eurosongu on 4 March 2016.

Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with the song "Space" written by Adis Eminić, Iva Boršić and Momčilo Zeković. The song was performed by Slavko Kalezić, who was internally selected by the Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) to represent the nation at the 2017 contest in Kyiv, Ukraine. Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 with the song "Inje" written and performed by Vanja Radovanović. The Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) organised the national final Montevizija 2018 in order to select the Montenegrin entry for the 2018 contest in Lisbon, Portugal. Five entries competed in the national final on 17 February 2018 where the winner was selected over two rounds of public televoting. Montenegro participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 with the song "Heaven" written by Dejan Božović and Adis Eminić. The song was performed by the group D mol. The Montenegrin broadcaster Radio i televizija Crne Gore (RTCG) organised the national final Montevizija 2019 in order to select the Montenegrin entry for the 2019 contest in Tel Aviv, Israel. Five entries competed in the national final on 9 February 2019 where the winner was selected over two rounds of voting. In the first round, the top two entries advanced to the superfinal following the combination of the votes of an international jury, a Montenegrin jury, a radio jury and public televoting. In the superfinal, "Heaven" performed by D-moll was selected as the winner entirely by a public televote, gaining 62% of the votes. The group was later renamed as D mol for the Eurovision Song Contest.

Montenegro will be represented at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 with the song "Dobrodošli", written by Boris Subotić, Darko Dimitrov, and Violeta Mihajlovska Milić, and performed by Nina Žižić. The Montenegrin participating broadcaster, Radio and Television of Montenegro (RTCG), initially organised the national final Montesong 2024 to select its entry for the contest. The song "Clickbait" performed by Neonoen won the national final, however, the band withdrew due to a controversy over having previously performed their song in June 2023, with runner-up "Dobrodošli" by Žižić later announced as their replacement.

"Dobrodošli" is a song performed by Montenegrin singer Nina Žižić. It was written by Boris Subotić and Violeta Mihajlovska Milić, with production handled by Darko Dimitrov. The song will represent Montenegro in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.
