Vice Admiral Sir Neville Purvis KCB (born 8 May 1936) is a former Royal Navy officer who ended his career as Chief of Fleet Support.
Educated at Charterhouse School, Selwyn College, Cambridge and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Purvis joined the Royal Navy in 1953 and specialized as a submariner. [1] Promoted to rear admiral, he was appointed Director-General, Future Material Projects in 1987 [2] and Director-General, Naval Manpower and Training in 1988 [3] and then, having been promoted to vice admiral, he served as Chief of Fleet Support from 1991 until his retirement in 1994. [4]
In retirement he became Director General of the British Standards Institution (BSI) and thereafter Chief Executive of the British Safety Council [5] and, more recently, a Trustee of the Wellington Trust, a charity formed to preserve the sloop HMS Wellington. [6] He lives at Bramley in Surrey. [1]
Admiral of the Fleet Sir David Benjamin Bathurst is a former Royal Navy officer. After training as a pilot and qualifying as a helicopter instructor, Bathurst commanded a Naval Air Squadron and then two frigates before achieving higher command in the Navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff from 1993 to 1995: in that capacity he advised the British Government on the deployment of Naval Support including Sea Harriers during the Bosnian War.
The Fourth Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Supplies originally known as the Fourth Naval Lord was formerly one of the Naval Lords and members of the Board of Admiralty which controlled the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom the post is currently known as Chief of Materiel (Fleet). As of 2017, it is also known as Chief of Fleet Support, Chief of Materiel (Ships) then as of 2020, Director General Ships.
Admiral of the Fleet Sir William Doveton Minet Staveley was a Royal Navy officer. Staveley saw service as a minesweeper commander on coastal patrol during the Indonesia–Malaysia confrontation before commanding a frigate and then an aircraft carrier and ultimately achieving higher command in the Navy. He served as First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff in the late 1980s. In that role he fought hard for a fleet large enough to meet NATO commitments.
