The race is named after jockey Neville Sellwood (1922−1962), who rode champions Tulloch and Todman, first Golden Slipper Stakes winner. [2] Sellwood was also victorious in the USA and in 1962 achieved what was perhaps his greatest success, victory on Larkspur in The Derby. [2] Sellwood died after a fall in 1962 at Maisons-Laffitte Racecourse, near Paris, France. [2]
