New Brunswick municipal elections, 2016

Municipal elections were held in the Canadian province of New Brunswick on May 9, 2016. Here is a summary of the mayoral results in the major communities in the province and the council results for the three largest cities.

New Brunswick province in Canada

New Brunswick is one of four Atlantic provinces on the east coast of Canada. According to the Constitution of Canada, New Brunswick is the only bilingual province. About two thirds of the population declare themselves anglophones and a third francophones. One third of the population describes themselves as bilingual. Atypically for Canada, only about half of the population lives in urban areas, mostly in Greater Moncton, Greater Saint John and the capital Fredericton.

Elections New Brunswick is the non-partisan agency in New Brunswick, of the legislative assembly charged with running provincial elections, municipal elections, district education council and regional health authority elections. The Chief Electoral Officer oversees the electoral process and reports to the New Brunswick legislature. The Chief Electoral Officer is not permitted to vote in elections during his or her term.

Higher education in New Brunswick

Higher education in New Brunswick refers to education provided by higher education institutions in the Canadian province of New Brunswick. Higher education has a rich history in New Brunswick. The first English-language university in Canada was the University of New Brunswick. Mount Allison University was the first in the British Empire to award a baccalaureate to a woman, Grace Annie Lockhart, B.Sc. in 1875. Education is the responsibility of the provinces in Canada and there is no federal ministry governing it.

Department of Justice and Public Safety (New Brunswick)

The Department of Justice and Public Safety in the Canadian province of New Brunswick was formed when Premier Brian Gallant restructured government departments in 2016. It was a merger of all of the former Department of Public Safety with most of the former Department of Justice with the exception of the responsibilities for financial consumer services which transferred from Justice to the Department of Finance. Public Safety had been created in an earlier restructuring project by the Bernard Lord government on March 23, 2000. Largely created from the former Department of the Solicitor General, it also took on responsibilities for road safety and driver's licenses from the Department of Transportation, liquor and lottery regulation from the Department of Finance and safety code monitoring from the Department of Municipalities.

The New Brunswick electoral redistribution of 2013 was undertaken through the process set out in the Electoral Boundaries and Representation Act of New Brunswick, Canada. The legislation establishes a statutory requirement for redistribution of electoral districts after every second New Brunswick general election.

Brian Gallant Canadian politician

Brian Alexander Gallant, Q.C. is a Canadian politician who served as the 33rd Premier of New Brunswick from October 7, 2014 until November 9, 2018. Of Acadian and Dutch descent, Gallant practised as a lawyer before winning the Liberal leadership in October 2012, securing the riding of Kent in a by-election on April 15, 2013, shortly followed by his swearing in as Leader of the Opposition. After the 2014 election, in which the Progressive Conservative government of David Alward was defeated, Gallant was sworn in as Premier at the age of 32. Gallant represents the riding of Shediac Bay-Dieppe.
