Hungary has made many contributions to the fields of folk, popular and classical music. Hungarian folk music is a prominent part of the national identity and continues to play a major part in Hungarian music. The Busójárás carnival in Mohács is a major folk music event in Hungary, formerly featuring the long-established and well-regarded Bogyiszló orchestra. Instruments traditionally used in Hungarian folk music include the citera, cimbalom, cobza, doromb, duda, kanászkürt, tárogató, tambura, tekero and ütőgardon. Traditional Hungarian music has been found to bear resemblances to the musical traditions of neighbouring Balkan countries and Central Asia.
Beatrice is a Hungarian rock band. It was founded in 1969 as a women's band, and played mostly cover songs. In 1971, Nagy Feró joined the band as a frontman. In the following years, the members were gradually replaced, and from 1974 they began to write their own songs in the then popular glam rock style. In order to get a record deal the band became oriented towards disco music from 1976.
Superbutt is a Hungarian rock and heavy metal band. The Budapest-based act started up in 2000, and has released five full-length albums in English, as well as a 4 track EP and a bonus disc for their latest album with 4 new songs in Hungarian. Superbutt has toured all across Europe since 2001 and played over 600 concerts in 15 countries.
Sear Bliss is a Hungarian atmospheric black metal band from Szombathely, formed in 1993 by bassist, vocalist and now also keyboardist András Nagy. Apart from the usual heavy metal instruments they adopted synthesizer and wind instruments in their songs. The Netherlands' leading metal magazine, Aardschok awarded Sear Bliss debut album Phantoms the title of "CD Of The Month". It was the first time in the magazine's history that the award went to a black metal album.
Zoltán Téglás is an American singer. He was the frontman of melodic hardcore band Ignite from 1994 to 2020 and was also the lead vocalist of Pennywise for a short time, appearing on their tenth album All or Nothing. He has collaborated with other bands including The Misfits, Motörhead and Blind Myself. Téglás has another side project called Zoli Band.
C.A.F.B. is a Hungarian alternative rock band from Budapest, originally formed in 1990 with Gábor Szakácsi and Mihaly Szita. The band has been through several line-up changes between 2004 and 2014 but officially never broke up. After many short lived temporary line-ups the group reunited with its most successful late 1990s members in 2015.
Dawnstar are an indie-rock band from Budapest, Hungary. The band's original line-up includes the songwriter Attila Wind (vocals/guitars), Bálint Hamvas (bass), and Viktor Albert (drums). The sound of the band is generally a mix of flanging and light distorted guitars, throbbing bass, and enchanting keyboard melodies. Dawnstar represents a mixture of mid-1960s psychedelic, late 1970s goth, mid-1980s grunge and 1990s indie rock of the Budapest indie music scene.
Európa Kiadó is a Hungarian underground rock band formed in 1981 in Budapest from the members of the then freshly disbanded URH: László Kiss, András Salamon and lyricist-composer-guitarist-singer Jenő Menyhárt, joined by József Dénes and András Gerő. Soon keyboardist Gerő and drummer Salamon parted, and got replaced by János Másik and Péter Magyar. Európa Kiadó was, and is on the verge of breaking up all through its lifetime with many pauses and farewell concerts, the first being in 1983, two years after its foundation. On releasing their first studio album, Popzene in 1987, Másik left the band for a while, Dönci, for religious reasons, for ever, to only return as cameo in later concerts; and on their 1989 album, Szavazz rám, Sziámi's János Gasner played the lead guitar. In 1990, not long before two of the founding members left the country for a longer period, Orsolya Varga became the permanent keyboardist, Péter Kirschner the guitarist, and the lineup remained unchanged until 2008, when Péter Magyar was appointed background percussionist, first accompanied by, then fully replaced by other drummers.

Wisdom was a Hungarian power metal band from Budapest. Formed in autumn 2001, the group was known for its practice of basing each song on a well-known quotation. Many of the band's lyrics and all of the album covers center on the story of an old man, a cult figure called Wiseman.
Bankrupt is a Hungarian punk rock band from Budapest, Hungary. They are one of the best-known Hungarian bands outside Hungary in their genre, having received coverage in UK, US, and Canadian online magazines.

Galloping Coroners is a Hungarian rock band active between 1975–2001, and since 2009. The band established a unique "shaman punk" or "psychedelic hardcore" sound, and is regarded as one of the most important alternative bands of the 1980s from the Eastern European bloc. Permanent restrictions by Hungarian authorities made worldwide tours difficult for the band, but its ecstatic concerts garnered surprising success across Western Europe. Though relatively obscure and commercially limited outside of Eastern Europe, Maximumrocknroll described the band as "equal in spirit and grit to faves like Sonic Youth or Big Black but with an identity all its own". VHK has been praised as a highly important band by Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra and Einstürzende Neubauten.
Sexepil is a Hungarian indie-alternative rock band based in Budapest, Hungary. The band was formed by Zoltán Hegyi, Viktor László, Tamás Kocsis, and Tibor Vangel in 1984.
Attila László is a Hungarian jazz guitarist and composer. László is one of the leaders of Hungary's second generation of jazz musicians, which includes Lakatos, Dés, Kőszegi, and Pege. He was president of the Hungarian Jazz Federation (1999–2005) and performed with Anthony Jackson, Randy Brecker, James Moody, David Friedman, Gary Willis, Bob Mintzer, Peter Erskine, Hiram Bullock, Miroslav Vitous, Ilaiyaraaja, Russell Ferrante, and Jimmy Haslip. Laszlo won the Golden Cross of Merit prize.
Undertaking was a Hungarian thrash metal band formed in Budapest in 1988. The band consisted of György Killan, Viktor Jakab and Imre Esztári (drums). Undertaking was active for only about a year, yet it became one of the most successful bands of the Hungarian thrash metal scene at the end of the 1980s. The members organized and ran the wildly popular monthly thrash metal event that operated under the banner of Thrash Mosh Club in Újpest (Budapest) at Ländler Jenő Művelődési Ház where they were the house band. The 7-song demo recorded in December 1988 titled V12BB4U and was distributed through mail order and small independent record shops. Singing in English made it next to impossible to have their music published through any official channels of the socialist Hungary of that era. Despite their popularity, Undertaking broke up at the end 1989 due to inner frictions. They played their last show at Vienna's Rockhaus opening for Rage.
Dreyelands is a Hungarian progressive metal band formed in 2002. They won the 'Debut Album of the Year' of Hang-Súly - Hungarian Metal Awards in 2010.
Irigy Hónaljmirigy are a Hungarian comedy/parody band, known around Hungary for their parodies of popular songs from both the country and abroad, as well as celebrities and TV shows. They had their own TV show, Irigy Hónaljmirigy Show, which ran on TV2 from 2000 until 2010. On their demos and their first album, they mostly parodied Hungarian rock songs, from their second album and onwards they started parodying the popular music scene in general. Since 2004, the band's albums are released by Hungarian major record label CLS Music.
Bulls of Prey is a rock band from Hungary, residing in Budapest. The group was formed by Bálint L. Tóth with the aim of bringing blues-rock musicians together to create and perform heavy rock'n'roll / blues music. The four piece formation primarily plays their own compositions, which are inspired by the spirit and sound of the hard rock, blues rock and southern rock genres of the 1970s.
