The News-Times is a weekly newspaper covering the cities of Forest Grove and Hillsboro in the U.S. state of Oregon. Established in 1886 and with coverage focused on Forest Grove for most of its history, the paper only recently added equivalent coverage of the much larger city of Hillsboro, when, in August 2019, publisher Pamplin Media Group launched a separate Hillsboro edition of the News-Times, to replace Pamplin's Hillsboro Tribune . [2] The paper is published on Wednesdays. [3] It is owned by Pamplin Media Group, which owns other community newspapers in the Portland metropolitan area.

History

The newspaper was established in 1886 as the Washington County News-Times. [3] It was sold in 1980 to The Guard Publishing Co., which published The Register-Guard . [4] Five years later the company entered an agreement with Eagle Newspapers to manage its five weekly newspapers in Washington County. [5] In 1987, Eagle Newspapers and The Guard Publishing Co., merged their newspapers near Portland to create a new joint venture, [6] which was called Community Newspapers, Inc. [7] The business was sold to Steve Clark in 1996. [8]

In 1999, the newspaper took first place in its division for spot news coverage and enterprise reporting in 1999 from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, [9] and the following year took first for news photo and local column. [10]

In August 2000, Community Newspapers was acquired by Pamplin Communications, passing ownership of the News-Times to Pamplin Media Group. [11] The News-Times took home two more first-place prizes at the Better Newspaper Contest in 2001, [12] but just one in 2002. [13] In 2006, the newspaper had three first-place finishes at the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association's Better Newspaper Contest. [14] The paper took first place for its division for educational coverage in 2007 from the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association. [15]

Pamplin Media Group launched the Hillsboro Tribune in nearby Hillsboro in September 2012, which then competed with The Hillsboro Argus . [16] [17] The Argus' publisher then launched the Forest Grove Leader in October 2012. [18] [19] The News-Times' publisher claimed the launch of the second Forest Grove newspaper was retaliation for starting the Hillsboro paper. [19] [20] The competition between the media companies was the focus of a "Think Out Loud" segment on Oregon Public Broadcasting in November 2012 featuring News-Times publisher John Schrag. [21] The Argus and Leader were later merged into a single paper called the Washington County Argus, which ceased publication in 2017. [22]

Schrag, a former Willamette Week editor, became the paper's editor in the mid-2000s, and the News-Times won several statewide awards for general excellence during his tenure. [23] Nikki DeBuse became the News-Times' publisher on February 1, 2016. [24]

In August 2019, owner Pamplin Media announced that a new Hillsboro edition of the News-Times would be launched on August 14, replacing the Pamplin-owned Hillsboro Tribune , which had been in publication since 2012. The final newsprint edition under the Tribune name was published on August 7, 2019, [2] and the first "Hillsboro Edition" of the News-Times was published on August 14, 2019. [25] The two papers were already owned by the same company, and had been operating out of the same office in Forest Grove since the Tribune's inception. [2]

The Portland Tribune is a weekly newspaper published every Wednesday in Portland, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Pamplin Media Group, which publishes a number of community newspapers in the Portland metropolitan area. Launched in 2001, the paper was published twice weekly until 2008, when it was reduced to weekly. It returned to twice-weekly publication in 2014 and was again reduced to weekly publication in 2020. It was distributed free from its 2001 launch until October 2022, then becoming available only by paid subscription or purchase at retail outlets.

<i>The Hillsboro Argus</i>

The Hillsboro Argus was a twice-weekly newspaper in the city of Hillsboro, Oregon, from 1894 to 2017, known as the Washington County Argus for its final year. The Argus was distributed in Washington County, Oregon, United States. First published in 1894, but later merged with the older, 1873-introduced Forest Grove Independent, the paper was owned by the McKinney family for more than 90 years prior to being sold to Advance Publications in 1999. The Argus was published weekly until 1953, then twice-weekly from 1953 until 2015. In early 2017, it was reported that the paper was planning to cease publication in March 2017. The final edition was that of March 29, 2017.

Eagle Newspapers was an American newspaper publisher serving the states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho. The company originated in 1948 when Elmo Smith purchased the Blue Mountain Eagle. He would later sell the paper but the company's name would be derived from that title. Smith served a partial term as Oregon Governor and upon his death the business was managed by his son Denny Smith, who rapidly grew it from three newspapers to nearly twenty in the span of two decades. By 1985, Eagle Newspapers publications accounted for nearly one-half of the weekly newspapers sold each week in Oregon. The company sold off its last paper in 2020.

Hillsboro Intermodal Transit Facility (HITF) is a parking garage with extensive bicycle facilities located in Hillsboro in the U.S. state of Oregon. Located next to Hillsboro Medical Center, the facility has nearly 800 parking spaces, including 13 that have charging stations for electric vehicles, as well as 35 secured spaces for bicycles that include showers and lockers. Opened in 2010, HITF also has 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2) of commercial space, which is mainly used by Portland Community College’s Hillsboro Center. The $16 million facility was a joint project between the city, Pacific University, and Tuality Healthcare.

The Hillsboro Tribune was a weekly newspaper that covered the city of Hillsboro in the U.S. state of Oregon and was published from 2012 to 2019. It was replaced in 2019 by a Hillsboro edition of the Forest Grove News-Times, a sister publication.

The Forest Grove Leader was a weekly community newspaper in Forest Grove in the U.S. state of Oregon. Started in 2012, it was published by the Oregonian Publishing Company, which also published The Hillsboro Argus newspaper and continues to publish The Oregonian. The free publication competed with the News-Times in the city, a suburb of the Portland metropolitan area. In January 2016, it was combined with two other newspapers to form the Washington County Argus, but the Argus ceased publication only 14 months later, in March 2017.

The Business Tribune website is updated daily and breaking news bulletins are posted on topics including business, development, legal news and public notices, mainly in the Portland metro area. It is locally-owned and readership reaches state-wide.

Journalism in the U.S. state of Oregon had its origins from the American settlers of the Oregon Country in the 1840s. This was decades after explorers like Robert Gray and Lewis and Clark first arrived in the region, several months before the first newspaper was issued in neighboring California, and several years before the United States formally asserted control of the region by establishing the Oregon Territory.
