The Columbia County Spotlight, previously known as the Scappoose Spotlight [1] and the South County Spotlight, [2] is a weekly newspaper in Columbia County, Oregon, United States, established in 1961. [3] It covers local news, sports, business and community events, publishes weekly on Fridays, and has a circulation between 3,600 [4] and 4,500. [5]

The paper serves Scappoose and St. Helens, and covers communities along Highway 30 from Linnton and Sauvie Island to Clatskanie. The editorial staff is based in Scappoose, while some administration and creative services are based in Milwaukie at the headquarters of Pamplin Media Group, which owns the newspaper. The Spotlight is one of a number of community newspapers in the group, including the Forest Grove News-Times and the Hillsboro Tribune .

Reporter Tyler Graf won a first place award for feature business writing for a Spotlight article in 2012. [6] Graf, who had recently come to the paper from the Daily Journal of Commerce , soon moved on to the nearby Daily Astorian . [7] The newspaper won four awards in the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association Better Newspaper Contest in 2015, [8] including second place for best editorial, third place for best feature, second place for best graphics and first place for best sports photo. The Spotlight is a general member of the association. Its coverage has been cited by other newspapers in the area, including The Oregonian , [9] [10] [11] and it is part of the Northwest News Partnership, along with Daily Astorian and the EO Media Group. Darryl Swan, who had previously served as the paper's news editor, was appointed publisher in 2008 [15] and remained in that role until 2020. [16] In 2020, Nikki DeBuse was named publisher and Mark Miller, who reported for the Spotlight from 2013 to 2015, was named editor. [3]

The Hillsboro Argus was a twice-weekly newspaper in the city of Hillsboro, Oregon, from 1894 to 2017, known as the Washington County Argus for its final year. The Argus was distributed in Washington County, Oregon, United States. First published in 1894, but later merged with the older, 1873-introduced Forest Grove Independent, the paper was owned by the McKinney family for more than 90 years prior to being sold to Advance Publications in 1999. The Argus was published weekly until 1953, then twice-weekly from 1953 until 2015. In early 2017, it was reported that the paper was planning to cease publication in March 2017. The final edition was that of March 29, 2017.

The Forest Grove Leader was a weekly community newspaper in Forest Grove in the U.S. state of Oregon. Started in 2012, it was published by the Oregonian Publishing Company, which also published The Hillsboro Argus newspaper and continues to publish The Oregonian. The free publication competed with the News-Times in the city, a suburb of the Portland metropolitan area. In January 2016, it was combined with two other newspapers to form the Washington County Argus, but the Argus ceased publication only 14 months later, in March 2017.

Prior to the 1965 incorporation of Lincoln City, the paper was known as the North Lincoln News Guard, and was published in the communities of Delake and Nelscott.
