Newswest is a community publication serving a number of communities within Canada's National Capital Region. Newswest is a wholly Canadian publication and not related to the 1980s U.S. newspaper NewsWest, previously owned by Tab Communications.

Newswest was founded in October 1978 with help from the Canada Works federal program of the time. [1] Early on, it moved its headquarters into the old Westboro Community Centre on Dovercourt Avenue for 5 years prior to that property's conversion to a recreation centre. [2] [3] [4] When the neighbouring Hintonburg News ceased operation, Newswest expanded its coverage into the now defunct Elmdale Ward in 1998. [5]

Newswest is one of the longest surviving community newspapers in Ottawa. It operates as a non-profit corporation and is published 12 times a year inside Kitchissippi Times with a circulation of well over 16,000 copies. [6] The inclusion of Newswest in Kitchissippi Times began in 2003 after an agreement on advertising revenue was reached between the 2 papers. [7] Since that time Kitchissippi Times handles all advertising allowing Newswest to focus on its non-profit community content. Kitchissippi Times is published 24 times per year so the editors of the 2 papers share responsibility on things like the Community Calendar section.

Newswest covers the area bordered (east to west) by the O-Train Trillium Line and Woodroofe Avenue, and between the Ottawa River and Carling Avenue. This area includes the neighbourhoods of Mechanicsville, Hintonburg, Champlain Park, West Wellington, Hampton Park, Westboro Beach, Westboro, Highland Park, McKellar Park, Carlingwood and the Civic Hospital.

Most of the articles to Newswest are provided by local volunteer writers and photographers. Additionally, columns from the local representatives for 3 levels of government and the public school board appear regularly. [8]

Kitchissippi Ward is a city ward in the city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It gets its name from the Algonquin name for the Ottawa River, meaning Great River. The ward is slightly west of downtown, and covers the neighbourhoods of Champlain Park, Civic Hospital, Hampton Park, Highland Park, Hintonburg, Island Park, McKellar Heights, McKellar Park, Mechanicsville, Westboro Beach, Westboro, Wellington Village, and Wellington Street West.

She won the position for Kitchissippi Ward councillor in the 2006 Ottawa municipal election on 13 November 2006 after incumbent Shawn Little dropped out of the race. She only served one term however, losing the 2010 election. to Katherine Hobbs. After her defeat she went to on to head the Glebe Business Improvement Area (BIA).

Shawn William Little was a political consultant and Ottawa City Councillor in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, for the urban Kitchissippi Ward, consisting of neighbourhoods west of the City Centre. He was born in Ottawa and raised in its Westboro neighbourhood, where he attended Woodroffe Avenue and Broadview Public elementary schools followed by Nepean High School. He earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Carleton University, and a diploma in health sciences from Humber College. He wrote articles for the Newswest community paper in its early days. He died in November 2012 while vacationing in Cuba.

Hampton Park is a park and neighbourhood in Kitchissippi Ward, in the west end of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is directly north of the Queensway at Island Park Drive. The park is maintained by the National Capital Commission.

Highland Park is a sub-neighbourhood of Westboro, in the Kitchissippi Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is located between Carling Avenue and Richmond Road, Churchill Avenue and Denbury Ave. It is a prominently upper-class area that contains some large luxury homes closer to Richmond Road and a large number of middle-class low-rise apartment buildings closer to Carling Avenue. The population of the neighbourhood according to the Canada 2011 Census was 4,070.

McKellar Park is a neighbourhood located in Kitchissippi Ward in the west end of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. It is sometimes considered to be part of the greater Westboro area. It is bounded on the east by Denbury Avenue, on the south and west by Sherbourne Avenue and on the north by the Ottawa River. It is considered a trendy and expensive area, being close to the Westboro Village.

The neighbourhood is covered by the Wellington Village Community Association, with the exception of Island Park Drive, which is covered by the Island Park Community Association. The neighbourhood was originally named Elmdale for the number of elm trees in the area, and was founded in 1922. The homes were built between the 1920s and 1940s.

Katherine Hobbs is a former Ottawa city councillor of Kitchissippi Ward. She won the ward in the 2010 Ottawa municipal election, defeating the incumbent Christine Leadman, and was defeated by Jeff Leiper in 2014.

McKellar Heights Neighbourhood in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

The neighbourhood is generally triangular in shape, and is generally bounded on the north by Westboro, on the west by Glabar Park, and on the south by Carlington. Byron Linear Tramway Park

Byron Linear Tramway Park is a municipal park in Kitchissippi Ward and Bay Ward in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The park forms a narrow strip of park land that runs westward from Holland Avenue to Richardson Avenue in Woodpark, with the exception of Westboro Village. Running through the entirety of the park is a path through grass and trees. The park forms a narrow 2.5 km strip, but has a width varies between 5 and 15 metres.
