Newton Stewart was an unincorporated town in Orange County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. [1] The town site lies under the waters of Patoka Lake.
Newton Stewart was platted in 1839 by William and Henry Stewart. [2] According to Ronald L. Baker, the community's name may also allude to Newton Stewart, in Scotland. [3] A post office was established at Newton Stewart in 1850, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1973. [4] The town was one of several communities inundated by the creation of the Patoka Lake reservoir in the late 1970s. [5]
...and Netwon Stewart is a Scottish place name.
