Niall McCrudden was a music manager, promoter, celebrity optician and socialite. He was co-founder of Insight, one of Ireland's foremost optician chains. [1] He became known as the "optician to the stars" after selling a pair of sunglasses to Jim Corr. [2]

Career

McCrudden initially worked for McNally Opticians for two years. [3] Insight was founded by McCrudden and partner Graham Smithers in 1992, with its first practice located on top of a doctor on the Swords Road. [3] He was considered the "unofficial optician to Ireland's trendy eyeware-sporting celebrities". [1] They later located to Clane, Inchicore and Rathcoole for a time and tested the eyes of students in universities. [3] In 2006 the company was involved in a dispute with Specsavers which used the word "insight" during an advertising campaign. [1] McNally Opticians acquired Insight later that year. [3] McCrudden's had an exhibition titled Stars in their Specs and an optical museum on Talbot Street, Dublin which featured on Mooney in May 2007 when reporter Brenda Donohue paid a visit. [4] He next turned his eye to Sunglasses.ie, a new website he set up in August 2009. [5]

McCrudden was involved in other businesses. [3] He also managed boybands. [3] In 2005 he attended an international polo tournament. [6] He was also reported as having attended other social events, such as important birthday parties. [7] In September 2009 he was one of a team of Irish celebrities who spent a week climbing Machu Picchu in Peru in aid of Autism Action. [8] [9]

Health

He endured depression and had spent time receiving treatment in hospital. [2] He discharged himself and was found dead in his Drumcondra home at the age of 45 on the evening of 20 February 2010. [10] [11] [12] He had one son, who outlived him alongside his parents, twin brother and sister. [10]

Many of Ireland's celebrities, including models, former Miss World Rosanna Davison, musicians, Eurovision Song Contest winners, television personalities, snooker players and the Lord Mayor of Dublin, attended McCrudden's funeral at the Corpus Christi Church in Griffith Avenue, Dublin on 24 February 2010. [11] Boyzone member Keith Duffy was one of those who helped carry the coffin. [11] Fellow Boyzone member and friend Mikey Graham tweeted his disappointment at the news — "Very sad today. Lost a very close pal on Saturday and just found out before I went on ice. So damn tough, another friend gone. RIP pal." — he was unable to attend the funeral as he was in London rehearsing for a television show. [12] Boyzone had known McCrudden since 1993. [13]

Boyzone Irish boy band

Boyzone were an Irish boy band, created in 1993 by talent manager Louis Walsh. Before even recording any material, Boyzone made an appearance on RTÉ's The Late Late Show. Their most successful line-up was composed of Keith Duffy, Stephen Gately, Mikey Graham, Ronan Keating, and Shane Lynch. As of 2018, Boyzone have released seven studio albums and nine compilation albums.

Stephen Gately Irish singer and songwriter

Stephen Patrick David Gately was an Irish pop singer-songwriter, actor, children's writer, and dancer, who, with Ronan Keating, was co-lead singer of the pop group Boyzone, where all of Boyzone's studio albums during Gately's lifetime hit number one in the United Kingdom, their third being their most successful internationally. With Boyzone, Gately had a record-breaking sixteen consecutive singles enter the top five of the UK Singles Chart. He performed for millions of fans globally. He released a solo album in 2000, after the group's initial break-up, which charted in the UK top ten and yielded three UK hit singles, including the top three hit "New Beginning". Gately went on to appear variously in stage productions and on television programmes as well as contributing songs to various projects. In 2008, he rejoined his colleagues as Boyzone reformed for a series of concerts and recordings.

Derek James Mooney is an Irish radio and television presenter, as well as a radio producer. Until January 2015 he presented a weekday afternoon programme called Mooney on RTÉ Radio 1. He is the current executive producer across RTÉ Radio 1's nature and wildlife programming

The Ireland international rules football team is the representative team for Ireland in international rules football, a compromise between Gaelic football and Australian rules football. The team is made up of Irish players from the Gaelic Athletic Association and Australian Football League.

2009 Meteor Awards

The 2009 Meteor Music Awards ceremony took place on 17 March 2009 in the RDS, Dublin. It was the ninth edition of Ireland's national music awards. The event was recorded and it aired on RTÉ Two on 18 March 2009. The awards show was hosted by television presenter Amanda Byram.

Mint Restaurant was a Michelin star–winning restaurant located in Ranelagh, Dublin in Ireland. It was owned by the controversial celebrity chef Dylan McGrath. The restaurant was featured in the 2008 RTÉ One fly on the wall documentary The Pressure Cooker, a programme which led to much complaint from McGrath's fellow chefs in the Irish media about his alleged mistreatment of his staff. The closure of Mint Restaurant was publicised in the Evening Herald on 23 April 2009.

Derry Clarke is an Irish celebrity chef, and was the proprietor of the restaurant L'Ecrivain. He has also been a reality television judge, having acted as a judge alongside Bibi Baskin and Sammy Leslie on the RTÉ One reality television series Fáilte Towers, and has appeared on other programmes such as The Restaurant, The Afternoon Show and The Panel.
