Nicholas S. Zeppos (born 1955) is an American lawyer and university administrator. He was the eighth chancellor of Vanderbilt University in Nashville,Tennessee. On April 2,2019,Zeppos announced that he would be stepping down from the position on August 15 of the same year. [1]
Nicholas Zeppos was born in Milwaukee,Wisconsin in 1955. He received his B.A. in history in 1976 and his J.D. in 1979 from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. [2] [3] In 1978 and 1979,he served as the editor-in-chief of the Wisconsin Law Review . [4] [5]
Zeppos started his career as a practicing attorney in Washington,D.C. He joined the faculty of the Vanderbilt Law School in 1987. [2] During his tenure at Vanderbilt,he has held a number of posts,including professor of law,associate dean of the law school,associate provost for academic affairs,vice chancellor for institutional planning and advancement,and,in 2001,provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs. [6] In this last role,he oversaw academics,development,alumni relations,and residential and student life. [7] After Gordon Gee's departure in 2007,he was named interim chancellor. He was named chancellor suo jure on March 1,2008,by the university's Board of Trust. In 2009,he helped lead an expanded financial aid program called Opportunity Vanderbilt that replaced undergraduate need-based loans with grant and scholarship assistance. [8]
He has also written widely on legislation,administrative law,and professional responsibility. He has served as the chair of the Scholars Committee on the Federal Judiciary and as chair of the Rules Advisory Committee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. [6]
Zeppos was appointed to the National Security Higher Education Advisory Board,a program of the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2005. [2] He serves as the Chair of the Association of American Universities [9] and on the Board of Directors of Fulbright Canada. [10]
Zeppos is married to Lydia Howarth,a writer,and has two sons. [6] His salary as chancellor was over $2.2 million. [11]
According to OpenSecrets,Zeppos has contributed nearly $70,000 to Democrats,including Barack Obama and Elizabeth Warren,but has contributed also to Republicans including Bob Corker,Rick Perry,and Lamar Alexander. [12]
Vanderbilt University is a private research university in Nashville,Tennessee. Founded in 1873,it was named in honor of shipping and rail magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt,who provided the school its initial $1-million endowment in the hopes that his gift and the greater work of the university would help to heal the sectional wounds inflicted by the Civil War. Vanderbilt is a founding member of the Southeastern Conference and has been the conference's only private school since 1966.
Elwood Gordon Gee is an American academic. As of 2023,he was serving his second term as President of West Virginia University;his first term was from 1981 to 1985. Gee has held more university presidencies than any other American. He was head of University of Colorado Boulder from 1985 to 1990,of Ohio State University from 1990 to 1997,of Brown University from 1998 to 2000,of Vanderbilt University from 2000 to 2007,and of Ohio State University for a second time from 2007 to 2013. Time rated Gee one of the top 10 college presidents in the United States for 2010.
Carol Tecla Christ is an American academic administrator. In March 2017,she was named the 11th Chancellor of the University of California,Berkeley,the first woman to hold that position. She succeeded outgoing Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks on July 1,2017.

Mark A. Nordenberg is the chancellor emeritus of the University of Pittsburgh and chair of the university's Institute of Politics. A professor of law and university administrator,Nordenberg served as the seventeenth Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh from 1996 to 2014. Nordenberg served as the Dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law between 1985 and 1993 and other various administrative positions before becoming interim Chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh in 1995,a position which became permanent the following year. He became known as Nordy to many Pitt students,who voted to name a recreation center and arcade in the William Pitt Union as Nordy's Place,and is also the namesake of the university's endowed Nordenberg Scholarships and the Nordenberg Hall dormitory on the university's campus.
James H. Ammons is an American educator,who is the Chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans. He served as president of Florida A&M University (FAMU) from July 2,2007,until his resignation took effect on July 16,2012. He is a native Floridian who grew up in the heart of Florida's citrus belt. He graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1970 and entered Florida A&M University on the Thirteen College Curriculum Program during the fall semester of 1970. Ammons was appointed Chancellor at Southern University in New Orleans January 8,2021.

Bennett Harvie Branscomb was an American theologian and academic administrator. He served as the fourth chancellor of Vanderbilt University,a private university in Nashville,Tennessee,from 1946 to 1963. Prior to his appointment at Vanderbilt,he was the director of the Duke University Libraries and dean of the Duke Divinity School. Additionally,he served as a professor of Christian theology at Southern Methodist University. He was the author of several books about New Testament theology.

He previously served as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Southern Methodist University from January 1,2016. From 2009 to 2014,Currall served as Dean of the UC Davis Graduate School of Management. He has also held leadership roles at University College London and Rice University. On March 22,2019,Currall was named to succeed Judy Genshaft as president of the University of South Florida,and took office July 1,2019. He announced his resignation due to health and family reasons on July 19,2021.
The National Security Higher Education Advisory Board (NSHEAB) was created by Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Robert S. Mueller III on December 15,2005. Operated by the FBI and paneled by approximately 20 American university presidents and chancellors,the expressed purpose of the board is "to foster outreach and to promote understanding between higher education and the Federal Bureau of Investigation." The board also facilitates communication between universities and federal authorities on "national priorities pertaining to terrorism,counterintelligence,and homeland security."
Steven H. Tallant is the former president of Texas A&M University-Kingsville,a part of the Texas A&M University System. He was succeeded by Dr. Mark A. Hussey in January 2019. Daniel Diermeier is a German-American political scientist and university administrator. He is serving as the ninth Chancellor of Vanderbilt University. Previously,Diermeier was the David Lee Shillinglaw Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago,where he also served as Provost. He succeeded Eric Isaacs on July 1,2016,and was succeeded by Ka Yee Christina Lee on February 1,2020.
