Maria Feodorovna,known before her marriage as Princess Dagmar of Denmark,was a Danish princess who became Empress of Russia as spouse of Emperor Alexander III. She was the second daughter and fourth child of King Christian IX of Denmark and of Louise of Hesse-Kassel;her siblings included Queen Alexandra of the United Kingdom,King Frederick VIII of Denmark and King George I of Greece. Her eldest son became the last Russian monarch,Emperor Nicholas II of Russia –she lived for ten years after Bolshevik functionaries killed him and his immediate family in 1918.

Nicholas inherited his brother's throne despite the failed Decembrist revolt against him. Alexandra Feodorovna was the empress consort of Emperor Nicholas II from their marriage on 26 November [O.S. 14 November] 1894 until his forced abdication on 15 March [O.S. 2 March] 1917. As such,she was also the last empress consort of Russia. Originally Princess Alix of Hesse and by Rhine at birth,she was given the name and patronymic Alexandra Feodorovna when she converted and was received into the Russian Orthodox Church. She and her immediate family were all killed while in Bolshevik captivity in 1918,during the Russian Revolution. In 2000 the Russian Orthodox Church canonized her as Saint Alexandra the Passion Bearer.

Sir Nicholas George Winton was a British banker and humanitarian who established an organisation to rescue children at risk from Czechoslovakia. Born to German-Jewish parents who had emigrated to Britain at the beginning of the 20th century,Winton supervised the rescue of 669 children,most of them Jewish,from Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II. Winton found homes for the children and arranged for their safe passage to Britain. This operation was later known as the Czech Kindertransport.

St. Nicholas Avenue is a major street that runs obliquely north-south through several blocks between 111th and 193rd Streets in the New York City borough of Manhattan. He advocated modernization based on foreign loans and close ties with France,but resisted giving the new parliament major roles. Ultimately,progress was undermined by Nicholas's commitment to autocratic rule,strong aristocratic opposition and defeats sustained by the Russian military in the Russo-Japanese War and World War I. By March 1917,public support for Nicholas had collapsed and he was forced to abdicate the throne,thereby ending the Romanov dynasty's 304-year rule of Russia (1613–1917).
