Nick Kopia Kuman is a Papua New Guinea politician. He is a Member of the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea, representing the seat of Gumine Open since 2002 as a member of People's National Congress.

The People's National Congress is a political party in Papua New Guinea. Its former leader Bill Skate served as Prime Minister from 1997 to 1999 and as speaker of Parliament from 2002 to 2004. Skate died in 2006 and the party is now led by Peter O'Neill. PNC originated from the National Capital District where former leader was the Governor of NCD and the Parliamentary Member. The party had 26 members in the 111-seat National Parliament of Papua New Guinea as of June 2019.

Early life

Kuman obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Management) with Honours from the University of Western Sydney, Australia. Prior to his election, he was employed by the National Capital District Commission for 19 years, and was the Deputy City Manager of the National Capital District. [1]

The National Capital District of Papua New Guinea is the incorporated area around Port Moresby, which is the capital of Papua New Guinea. Although it is surrounded by Central Province, where Port Moresby is also the capital, it is technically not a part of that province. It covers an area of 240 km² and has a population of 364,125. It is represented by three open MPs and an NCD-wide representative in the National Parliament of Papua New Guinea who acts as Governor of the National Capital District; however, these MPs do not have the same powers as elsewhere in the country due to the role of the National Capital District Commission.

Political career

He was first elected to the National Parliament in the 2002 general election for Gumine Open as an Independent candidate, then joined People's National Congress. He was appointed as Minister for Culture and Tourism in the Somare/Marat cabinet from 2003 to 2004, and again from 2007 to 2012.

2002 Papua New Guinean general election

General elections were held between 15–29 June 2002 in Papua New Guinea. Sir Michael Somare's National Alliance Party won the most seats, and he went on to become Prime Minister.

He was re-elected in the 2012 general election, but was declared duly elected in November 2013 following a vote recount. On 24 February 2014, he was appointed Minister for Education in the O'Neill-Dion Cabinet, and held this position for the remaining duration of O'Neill's leadership.

2012 Papua New Guinean general election elections

A general election was held in Papua New Guinea (PNG) from 23 June to about 13 July 2012, after being postponed by a further week, due to allowing for security personnel to criss-cross the country, particularly the highland provinces. The election also followed controversy over incomplete electoral rolls and the 2011–2012 Papua New Guinean constitutional crisis between the disputed prime ministers of Sir Michael Somare and Peter O'Neill.

On 7 June 2019, he was appointed as Minister for Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, as part of the First Marape Cabinet, replacing Pila Niningi. [2]

He avoided a vote of no confidence through resignation. A complex set of maneuvers left his party in government and Peter O’Neill as leader of his party. He was succeeded by James Marape as Prime Minister.
