Nicole Turner (born 14 June 2002), of Portarlington, Laois, is an Irish para-swimmer, competing mainly in the S6, short stature category. [1]

Turner has won medals in the youth category at the 2015 British International, senior at the 2016 IPC Swimming European Open Championships and the 2018 European Para-Swimming Championships, and in the youth final in the World Para Swimming Series in 2019. [1] [2]

Personal life

Turner was born with hypochondroplasia, making her of short stature. Nicole started swimming with her local club, Portarlington Piranhas, before moving to Laois Marlins in Portlaoise. She moved to train with Ireland's top swimmers at the National Aquatic Centre in Dublin in 2017. In 2019, after completing transition year, she deferred her secondary school studies to train fulltime for Tokyo. Nicole was the flagbearer for Team Ireland at the Rio Paralympics closing ceremony.

Career

Turner represented Ireland for the first time at a senior level at the 2015 British Para-Swimming International Meet, 26–29 March, where she placed fifth in the women's MC 50m butterfly. [3] [4] She won a silver medal in the Youth category in the 50m butterfly. [1]

Paralympic Games

Turner competed in five events at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro. Her best placing was fifth in 50m butterfly S6, an event in which Ellie Robinson won gold, Oksana Khrul silver, and Australia's Tiffany Thomas Kane bronze. [5] She was the youngest member of the Ireland team and was selected as the closing ceremony flag-bearer. [1]

Turner competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo and won a silver medal in the women's 50 metre butterfly S6. [6]

IPC Swimming World Championships

At the IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow in July 2015, at the age of 13, Turner reached the final in each of the six events she entered, setting personal bests in each. She finished fifth in the S6 400m freestyle, fifth in the SB6 100m breaststroke, sixth in the S6 50m butterfly, sixth in the S6 50m freestyle, eighth in the S6 200m individual medley, and seventh in the S6 100m freestyle. IPC Swimming European Championships

At the 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships in Funchal, 30 April - 7 May, Turner reach the finals in six events and took home three medals. She won silver in the 200m Individual Medley SM6 behind Ukraine's Yelyzaveta Mereshko, silver in the 100m Breaststroke SB6 behind Charlotte Henshaw of Great Britain, and bronze in the 50m Butterfly S6 behind Oksana Khrul (Ukraine) in gold medal position and Ellie Robinson (Great Britain) on bronze. In her other events, she placed fifth in the 100m Freestyle S6, sixth in the 50m Freestyle S6, and fourth in the 400m Freestyle S6. [9] [1]

World Para Swimming European Championships

In the 2018 World Para Swimming European Championships (renamed that year), Turner won silver in the 50m butterfly, as Ellie Robinson took gold. [10] [11]

2024

To begin the Paralympic year Nicole took part in Para Swimming European Championships 2024 Nicole in the 200m IM won Bronze while teammate Dearbhaile Brady Finished 5th two days later in the 50m freestyle Nicole became European champion winning gold finishing tied 1st with Nora Meister while Dearbhaile Brady won her first major championship medal winning bronze. One day later Nicole won a Bronze in the 100m Breastroke.

Hannah Russell, is a British Paralympic swimmer competing in S12 classification events. In the 2016 Summer Paralympic Games, she won the gold medal in the 100m backstroke with the time of 1:06:06 earning her the World Record.

Matthew Whorwood is a British Paralympic swimmer. Whorwood, who swims mainly in S6 events has competed in two Paralympic Games winning three bronze medals in freestyle and breastroke events.

Charlotte Sarah Henshaw is a British Paralympic full-time athlete across multiple disciplines. In September 2021, at the delayed 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, she became a Paralympic champion at her fourth games, winning the Women's KL2 event.

The 2014 IPC Swimming European Championships was an international swimming competition held in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, from the 4th to the 10th of August. Around 375 athletes from 35 different countries attended. The venue, the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, also held the 2010 IPC Swimming World Championships.

Tully Alicia Jacqueline Kearney is a British Paralympic swimmer. Kearney competes in the S5 classification for swimmers with physical disabilities. She won Gold and Silver at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games setting World records in both the 50 m and 100 m freestyle. Alice Tai, is a British paralympic swimmer. Tai competes in the SB8, SM8 and S8. She has represented Great Britain at European and World Championships and at the Commonwealth and Paralympic Games, gold medals at all levels.

The 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships was an international swimming competition. It was held in Funchal, Madeira running from 30 April to 7 May. Around 450 athletes from 50 different countries attended the competition. This was the last major swimming tournament for disabled athletes prior to the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, and acted as a qualifying event for the Rio Games. To increase the possibility of qualification for top swimmers, the championships was made an Open tournament allowing competitors from countries outside Europe to compete.

Arjola Trimi is an Italian Paralympic swimmer competing in S4 classification events. She competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics, and 2020 Summer Paralympics, in Women's 4 × 50 mixed freestyle relay, winning a silver medal.

Eleanor "Ellie" Robinson is an English swimmer. Competing in SB6 and S6 classification events, Robinson holds the World record and the Paralympic record in the S6 50m butterfly and the World record in the 100m, setting both at the age of 13.

Tucker Dupree is an American swimmer. He won three medals at the 2012 Paralympic Games and one at the 2016 Paralympic Games. He has also set multiple world and American records in swimming. He competes in the Paralympic classes S12/SB12/SM12.

Rebecca Meyers is a Paralympic swimmer of the United States. She won three gold and one silver medals in Rio 2016. She was also a member of the 2012 Paralympic Team, and won a silver and bronze in London. Rebecca Meyers has also competed at the 2009 Summer Deaflympics which was held in Taiwan, which is also her only appearance at the Deaflympics. She also clinched a bronze medal in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay event in the 2009 Summer Deaflympics.

Dimosthenis 'Dimos' Michalentzakis is a Greek Paralympic swimmer who competes in S9 and S8 classification events. He won Paralympic gold in the 100m butterfly S9 at 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro and Paralympic bronze in the 100m freestyle S8 at 2020 Summer Paralympics in Tokyo. He was born in Alexandroupoli in 19/10/1998 and he has origin from Feres. He holds the world record in 200 meters freestyle in his category with a performance of 2:07:16. The Municipal Swimming Pool of Alexandroupoli has his name.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Oksana Khrul</span> Ukrainian Paralympic swimmer

Oksana Khrul is a Ukrainian para-swimmer, competing in S6, SM6 and SB7 categories.

Maisie Summers-Newton, PLY is a British Paralympic swimmer, competing in S6 disability events. In August 2018, she took gold in the IPC Swimming European Championships SM6 200m individual medley and set a new world record at 2:59.60. She also holds the S6 100m Breaststroke world record in 1:32.16 which she achieved in May 2018 at the British Para-Swimming International Meet. She won two gold medals for Great Britain at the 2020 Summer Paralympics.
