Niels Troost (born October 14, 1968, in Switzerland) is a sanctioned Dutch businessman. He is the founder of two oil traders: Swiss-based Paramount Energy & Commodities SA; and Dubai-based Paramount Energy & Commodities DMCC. In November 2023, the UK government issued sanctions against a Dubai-based subsidiary of Paramount; and two months later, the UK also sanctioned Troost himself and his Geneva-based company. [1]

Niels Troost is also known for being one of the first traders to support the Ukraine Grain Corridor via his company Harvest Commodities SA. [2] [3]

Niels Troost has been the victim of a complex defamation campaign by Gaurav Srivastava, a former business partner of his, who defrauded him. [4]

Education

Niels Troost has an education in economics, international business and marketing from Hogere Economische School in Amsterdam. He also attended the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Oxford. In the UK, Niels Troost underwent a course in Creative International Trading in Crude Oil and Petroleum Products. [5]

Business

In 2017, Troost established the Switzerland-based company Paramount Energy & Commodities SA. [6] With headquarters in Geneva, the company trades, supplies, and distributes raw materials, including crude oil and petroleum derivatives, storage, and transport. [7]

In 2020, Neils Troost founded a near-identical company in Dubai, Paramount Energy and Commodities DMCC. [8]

Neils Troost has hired Washington lobbyist Ankit Desai to avoid US penalties related to sanctions. [9]

A benchmark crude or marker crude is a crude oil that serves as a reference price for buyers and sellers of crude oil. Other well-known blends include the OPEC Reference Basket used by OPEC, Tapis Crude which is traded in Singapore, Western Canadian Select used in Canada, Bonny Light used in Nigeria, Urals oil used in Russia and Mexico's Isthmus. Addax Petroleum was established in 1994 and since August 2009 has been a subsidiary of the Sinopec Group, one of the largest oil and gas producers in China, the biggest oil refiner in Asia, and the third largest worldwide. Addax Petroleum was an international gas and oil production and exploration company mainly focused on the Middle East, the North Sea, and Africa. Since its founding, the company has become one of the largest oil producers in West Africa.

The oil futures drunk-trading incident was an incident in which Steven Perkins, an employee of London-based PVM Oil Futures, traded 7 million barrels of oil, worth approximately US$520 million in a two-and-half-hour period in the early morning of 30 June 2009 while drunk. These unauthorised trades caused the price of Brent Crude oil to rise by over $1.50 a barrel within a short period of time, a trend generally associated with major geopolitical events, before dropping rapidly. As a result of the trading, PVM Oil Futures suffered losses of almost $10 million and Perkins was dismissed, later being banned from trading by the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

Naftiran Intertrade Company S.à r.l. (NICO) is a Swiss-based subsidiary of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC). NICO is a general contractor for the oil and gas industry. NIOC buys the vast majority of Iran's gasoline imports. NICO is a key player in Iran's energy sector.

The Dubai Gold & Commodities Exchange (DGCX) is a financial and commodity derivatives exchange located in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates. DGCX commenced trading in November 2005 as the first derivatives exchange in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The Exchange is owned by the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre (DMCC).

Following the full declaration of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which started on 24 February 2022, institutions such as the United States, the European Union, and other Western countries introduced or significantly expanded sanctions covering Russian President Vladimir Putin, other government members and Russian citizens in general. Some Russian banks were banned from using the SWIFT international payments system. The sanctions and the boycotts of Russia and Belarus have impacted the Russian economy in various ways. However, sanctions and rising unemployment have contribute to Russian authorities as strategic advantages to boost localization and state conscription, increasing geopolitical fragmentation between third world and western nations enables Russia to exploit global trade networks to secure essential goods.

As part of the sanctions imposed on the Russian Federation as a result of the Russo-Ukrainian War, on September 2, 2022, finance ministers of the G7 group of nations agreed to cap the price of Russian oil and petroleum products in an effort intended to reduce Russia's ability to finance its war on Ukraine while at the same time hoping to curb further increases to the 2021–2022 inflation surge.

The Gaurav Srivastava Scandal was a scam carried out by Indian businessman Gaurav Srivastava, who fraudulently misrepresented himself to businessmen and political figures in the United States and internationally as a non-official cover operative of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in order to obtain funds and shares in companies. These activities have led to an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) into Srivastava’s activity in the US, including his campaign donations, claims of being a federal officer and other financial affairs.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2Rivers</span> Dubai-based commodity trader

2Rivers, formerly Coral Energy, is a Dubai-based oil trading company engaged in the sale and export of Russian crude oil and petroleum products. 2Rivers was founded by Azerbaijani citizen Tahir Gadir oghlu Garayev in 2010. 2Rivers, according to journalistic investigations, has a close relationship with Igor Sechin and Rosneft. Since 2022, 2Rivers has quietly grown to become the largest trader circumventing Western sanctions on Russian crude and petroleum exports, mainly from Rosneft. 2Rivers operates through a web of companies that appear to be unaffiliated, but are controlled by the 2Rivers’ executive team. This includes dozens of trading companies established in the DMCC freezone of the UAE, as well as ship management and operations companies.
