Nils J. Diaz is a former chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission,having worked for the commission between 1996 and 2006. [1] He was the chairman of the commission between 2003 and 2006. [2] [1]
He was a nuclear engineering professor and chairman at the University of Florida in Gainesville,Florida,from the 1970s to the 1990s. Diaz holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in nuclear engineering from the University of Florida,and a B. S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Villanova,Havana.
After departing the Nuclear Regulatory Commission,he became the chief strategic officer for Blue Castle Project. [1] He is a former paid consultant for Bechtel. [3]
William Alison Anders is a retired United States Air Force (USAF) major general,former electrical engineer,nuclear engineer,NASA astronaut,and businessman. In December 1968,he was a member of the crew of Apollo 8,the first three people to leave low Earth orbit and travel to the Moon. Along with fellow astronauts Frank Borman and Jim Lovell,Anders circled the Moon ten times,and broadcast live images and commentary back to Earth. During one of the mission's lunar orbits,he took the iconic Earthrise photograph.
The Three Mile Island accident was a partial meltdown of the Three Mile Island,Unit 2 (TMI-2) reactor on the Susquehanna River in Londonderry Township,Pennsylvania,near the Pennsylvania capital of Harrisburg. It began at 4 a.m. on March 28,1979,and released radioactive gases and radioactive iodine into the environment. It is the worst accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant history. On the seven-point International Nuclear Event Scale,it is rated Level 5 –Accident with Wider Consequences.
