Nine Winds is an American jazz record label that was founded in 1977 by Vinny Golia. [1] [2] [3]
Golia is a self-taught musician who plays over fifty woodwind instruments, in addition to brass. [2] In the early 1970s, he believed it was impossible for musicians who lived outside New York City to get contracts with record labels. He founded Nine Winds to produce his own albums and that of others who played free jazz, avant-garde jazz, and other forms of avant-garde music that were difficult to sell. He issued several of his own albums, then the debut album by guitarist Nels Cline. The roster grew to include unconventional music by Alex Cline, Jeff Gauthier, and Wayne Peet.

Gregory E. Stinson, better known as G. E. Stinson, is an American guitarist and founding member of new age/electronic musical group Shadowfax. Inspired by blues masters such as Bo Diddley and Muddy Waters, Stinson experimented with blues, jazz and other musical genres before co-founding Shadowfax in 1974. He remained with the band for six albums. He departed Shadowfax after recording The Odd Get Even (1989), entering the Los Angeles underground music community to refine his 'extended technique' and 'frequency manipulation'. Since then he has worked with a number of musicians on various projects, including Napalm Quartet, Splinter Group, Stinkbug, Metalworkers, Alex De Grassi, Devin Sarno and others. In 2000, he collaborated with drummer Gregg Bendian, violinist Jeff Gauthier, and bassist Steuart Liebig on an album of collective improvisational pieces recorded live in the studio, entitled Bone Structure. Released in 2003, it was given four stars by Jim Andrews in DownBeat magazine.

Bob Rusch founded CIMP in 1995, with his son Marc Rusch as the recording engineer and his daughter Kara Rusch producing cover art.
The California Outside Music Association was a nonprofit music presenter and networking organization operating in the Los Angeles area from 1983 until 1991. The organization is best known for producing the album A Beginner’s Guide to COMA and a series of festivals called Day of Music. Founded by Titus Levi and Eric Potruch, COMA officially launched on March 3, 1983, when the two founders passed out a flyer describing COMA’s planned activities. This flyer came to be known as The COMA Manifesto. COMA's goals included bringing an eclectic scope of artists from diverse genres, for concerts and festivals. Genres included jazz, jazz rock, progressive rock, experimental 20th century compositions, ambient music music-concrete, free-jazz, post-rock improvisation, experimental rap, and multicultural/trans-cultural experiments.

Jeff Kaiser is an American trumpet player and composer who teaches music technology and music composition at the University of Central Missouri. As a trumpet player, he has performed and recorded with Vinny Golia's Large Ensemble, Eugene Chadbourne, The Motor Totemist Guild, and Guerino Mazzola, and played on the soundtrack for the HBO TV series Deadwood. As a composer and performer, Kaiser's recording on Nine Winds Records, Nothing is Not Breath, has been referred to on AllMusic as "one of the best presentations of Southern California improvising talent ever recorded, indicating his superior talents as a bandleader and conductor.” Performances of his experimental big band, The Jeff Kaiser Ockodektet, have been included among the top jazz concerts in San Diego.
