Nicknamed "Marvelous Mal", he was the Olympic champion in the 800 meters at the 1948 and 1952 Summer Olympics, and a member of the 1948 gold medal team in the 4 × 400 meters relay. Overall, Whitfield was a five-time Olympic medalist. After his competitive career, he worked for 47 years as a coach, goodwill ambassador, as well as an athletic mentor in Africa on behalf of the United States Information Service.

As head coach of the Temple University women’s fencing team, she was named the USFCA Coach of the Year in 1983, 1987, 1988, and 1991.

Her best individual achievements were fourth places on the vault and uneven bars in 1964. Born Toshiko Shirasu she changed her last name after marrying Nobuyuki Aihara, a fellow Olympic gymnast. Their son Yutaka Aihara won a bronze medal in gymnastics at the 1992 Olympics.

The men's artistic individual all-around competition at the 1960 Summer Olympics was held at the Baths of Caracalla from 5 to 7 September. It was the thirteenth appearance of the event. There were 130 competitors from 28 nations. Each nation entered a team of six gymnasts or up to two individual gymnasts. The event was won by Boris Shakhlin of the Soviet Union, the nation's third consecutive victory in the event, putting the Soviets second all-time to that point. Takashi Ono of Japan and Yuri Titov of the Soviet Union repeated as silver and bronze medalists, respectively; they were the fifth and sixth men to earn multiple medals in the event.
