NordLocker is a file encryption software integrated with end-to-end encrypted cloud storage. It is available on Windows and macOS. NordLocker is developed by Nord Security, a company behind the NordVPN virtual private network, and is based in the UK and the Netherlands. [3]

NordLocker uses a freemium business model, where users are offered a free account with unlimited local file encryption and a set amount of cloud storage with sync and backup features. More cloud storage is available via a paid subscription.

History

In May 2019, NordVPN announced the upcoming launch of NordLocker, “an app with a zero-knowledge encryption process”. [4] Although the initial estimated time of arrival was summer 2019, the actual launch took place in November. The app was launched as a local file encryption tool with secure sharing. Users were able to encrypt up to 5 GB of data for free or pay for unlimited encryption. [5]

In March 2020, NordLocker announced newly implemented cloud sharing integrations with Dropbox and Google Drive. [6]

In August 2020, NordLocker launched a cloud storage add-on, a feature allowing users to back up their data and synchronize it across multiple devices. [7]

Features

NordLocker is an encryption software with cloud integration. The software uses so called "lockers" - encrypted folders to encrypt and store user files. Users can create an unlimited number of lockers, drop files in to encrypt them, and transfer lockers separately. [8]

The app uses client-side encryption to secure files on the user's device first. [9] It's a zero-knowledge encryption system, where the developers have no data about users' files. [10] After the encryption process, the user can decide whether to store data locally or sync it via NordLocker’s cloud. [11] NordLocker syncs files via a private cloud, so they can be accessed from any computer with the NordLocker app installed.

The program uses AES-256 and 4096-bit RSA encryption algorithms [12] as well as Argon2 and ECC (with XChaCha20, EdDSA, and Poly1305). [13] NordLocker uses Libsodium to generate a random 256-bit key and encrypt lockers. To encrypt that key, the app then uses XChaCha20-Poly1305 and the user’s master password. [14]

The local encryption is free as of December 2020 — the service monetizes cloud storage space beyond the 3 GB provided with the free plan.

Hacking contest

In April 2020, NordLocker launched the "NordLocker Bounty campaign", a hacking competition with the top prize of $10,000. [15] To win, a person had to download an encrypted "locker" from the company's site, hack into it, and find the hidden message. Based on the NordLocker’s campaign page, there were over 600 attempts to break the locker but no one has claimed the bounty as of December 2020. [16]

Reception

A June 2020 PCMagazine review noted that NordLocker was easy to use but lacked features like secure file deletion and two-factor authentication. [17] In August 2020, ITPro called NordLocker’s cloud add-on a “critical feature for modern business, especially with the coronavirus outbreak forcing many companies’ workforces to remain remote.” [18] Restore Privacy praised NordLocker for strong end-to-end encryption and the "new, lower price" but mentioned the fact that NordLocker is not open-source. [19]

Boxcryptor, another encryption service, has compared NordLocker’s security to their own but noted that NordLocker does not have a mobile application. [20]

Google Drive is a file storage and synchronization service developed by Google. Launched on April 24, 2012, Google Drive allows users to store files in the cloud, synchronize files across devices, and share files. In addition to a web interface, Google Drive offers apps with offline capabilities for Windows and macOS computers, and Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. Google Drive encompasses Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Google Slides, which are a part of the Google Docs Editors office suite that permits collaborative editing of documents, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, forms, and more. Files created and edited through the Google Docs suite are saved in Google Drive.

Resilio Sync

Resilio Sync by Resilio, Inc. is a proprietary peer-to-peer file synchronization tool available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Amazon Kindle Fire and BSD. It can sync files between devices on a local network, or between remote devices over the Internet via a modified version of the BitTorrent protocol.

Tresorit is an online cloud storage service based in Switzerland and Hungary that emphasizes enhanced security and data encryption for businesses and individuals. The Business version offers up to 1TB of storage space per user and extra security features such as DRM, granular access levels and other functions, which Tresorit cites to creating a safer collaborative environment. Tresorit's service is accessible through client desktop software, a web-based application and mobile apps. Currently, the software is available for Windows, macOS, Android, Windows Phone 8, iOS, and Linux. Currently as of 2021, Swiss Post owns a majority stake in the cloud storage service. Tresorit works as an independent entity under Swiss Post.

Wickr is an American software company based in New York City. The company is best known for its instant messenger application of the same name.

ProtonMail end-to-end encrypted email service

ProtonMail is an end-to-end encrypted email service founded in 2013 in Geneva, Switzerland by scientists who spent time at the CERN research facility. ProtonMail uses client-side encryption to protect email content and user data before they are sent to ProtonMail servers, unlike other common email providers such as Gmail and Outlook.com. The service can be accessed through a webmail client, the Tor network, or dedicated iOS and Android apps.

Keeper (password manager) Password management software

Keeper is a password manager application and digital vault created by Keeper Security that stores website passwords, financial information and other sensitive documents using 256-bit AES encryption, zero-knowledge architecture and two-factor authentication.

Peerio was a cross-platform end-to-end encrypted application that provided secure messaging, file sharing, and cloud file storage. Peerio was available as an application for iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux. Peerio (Legacy) was originally released on 14 January 2015, and was replaced by Peerio 2 on 15 June 2017. The app is discontinued.

Mailfence

Mailfence is an encrypted email service that offers OpenPGP based end-to-end encryption and digital signatures. It was launched in November 2013 by ContactOffice Group, which has been operating an online collaboration suite for universities and other organizations since 1999.

NordVPN is a VPN service with applications for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and Android TV. Manual setup is available for wireless routers, NAS devices and other platforms.

Google One is a subscription service developed by Google that offers expanded cloud storage and is intended for the consumer market. Google One paid plans offer cloud storage starting at 100 gigabytes, up to a maximum of 30 terabytes, an expansion from the free Google Account storage space of 15 gigabytes, which is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Google One replaced the paid services of Google Drive to emphasize the fact that the program is used by multiple Google Services. The program's raw storage is not accessible by users, but emails, files, and pictures can be added and removed through Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos.

NordPass is a proprietary password manager launched in 2019. It is meant to help its users to organise their passwords and secure notes, keeping them in a single place — an encrypted password vault. This service comes in both free and premium versions, though the free version lacks much of the paid functionality like multi-device login.

Soft privacy technology has the goal to keep information safe and process data while having full control of how the data are being used. Soft privacy technology emphasis the usage of third-party programs to protect privacy, emphasizing audit, certification, consent, access control, encryption, and differential privacy. With the advent of new technology, there is a need to process billions of data every day in many areas such as health care, autonomous cars, smart cards, social media data, and more. 

A virtual private network service, or VPN service, provides a proxy server to users to bypass Internet censorship such as geoblocking or users who want to protect their communications against data profiling or MitM attacks on hostile networks.
