The Nordic is a German emergency tow vessel (ETV) stationed on an offshore position north of the East Frisian island of Norderney on halfway to Heligoland. It is the most powerful tugboat in German waters, operated by Fairplay Towage Group. [6] [7]
The construction and commissioning of the Nordic were a consequence of the Pallas accident off Amrum island in 1998 when the cargo vessel ran aground and lost a substantial amount of oil. [8] [9] Especially the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutsche Nordsee association and many other non-governmental organisations for the protection of the environment had worked towards the commissioning of a new emergency tow vessel on the German North Sea coast.
Constructions began on 27 October 2009 on the P+S Werften yards, formerly known as Peene-Werft, in Wolgast, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with yard number 563. Sea trials were held in October 2010. In the course of these trials, the Nordic delivered a bollard pull of 207 tons (ca. 2,030 kN). [10] After its completion on 15 November 2010 and the christening on 8 December 2010 by Susanne Ramsauer, the wife of Federal German Minister of Transport Peter Ramsauer, the ship replaced the salvage tug Oceanic which was decommissioned after 41 years in service on New Year's Day 2011. [11] [12] Unofficially, the construction costs of the Nordic were said to have been about € 50 million. [1]
The Nordic is owned by NORTUG Bereederungs GmbH & Co. KG which is partially held by the members of the German consortium Arbeitsgemeinschaft Küstenschutz. The ship is operated by Fairplay (after merger with the former operatior Bugsier-, Reederei- und Bergungsgesellschaft) who charter the tow vessel to the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development for an initial time of ten years and a fee of €114 million. [1] [13] The operational base is Cuxhaven on the mouth of the river Elbe. With a maximum speed of 19.9 knots (36.9 km/h; 22.9 mph) [4] the Nordic is able to reach any stricken vessel in German North Sea waters within two hours.
In order to be able to operate in a contaminated atmosphere, the ship has been fitted with superstructures that can be sealed tight and are explosion-proof. [7]
The crew of 16 includes a four people boarding team. In addition, up to 10 ship’s mechanic trainees and a training officer can be taken on board. Every three weeks the two regular crews take turns at the homeport Cuxhaven and take provisions, fuel etc. on board for the next three-weeks of readiness at sea. [14]
In 2017, the Nordic was deployed to the “Glory Amsterdam” accident. The Chinese captain of the damaged ship initially did not recognize the Nordic as an emergency vehicle of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 2019 the ship was given a black, red and gold identification on the side. [15]
The ship is fitted with two MTU 20V8000M71L plants in an anti-gas operational mode, two MTU 12V4000 auxiliary engines for driving the two main electrical generators and another Diesel engine by MAN which powers the emergency generator.
The Nordic has been prepared to operate in a flammable or harmful atmosphere, e.g. after a tanker accident. Among other safety measures, such cases involve the shutting down of the turbochargers so that compressed air inside them may not be ignited. However, this reduces the engine power. A seawater cooling of the exhaust system reduces the temperature of the exhaust fumes to 135 °C (275 °F). [8]
The propulsion is diesel-mechanical via a gearbox and shaft device by Flender AG onto two controllable-pitch propellers by Berg Propulsion which are mounted inside Kort nozzle frames. [13]
Fairplay Towage is a towing shipping company headquartered in Hamburg. It is also the parent company of the Fairplay Towage Group, which is active in several European countries through subsidiaries and investments. The Fairplay Group includes, among others, the Hamburg shipyard Theodor Buschmann GmbH & Co. (ship repairs and special steel construction for the offshore industry), the Rostock-based BBB Schlepp- und Hafendienst GmbH (port and short-sea towing services) and Borchard Schiffahrts GmbH (administration of real estate). The former main competitor, the Bugsier shipping company, has been part of the group since 2017.
The Baltic the main emergency tuck boat of the German Baltic Fleet was built at the Spanish Astilleros Armon dockyard in Vigo and is also owned and operated by Faiplay.
The Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research is located in Bremerhaven, Germany, and a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres. It conducts research in the Arctic, the Antarctic, and the high and mid latitude oceans. Additional research topics are: North Sea research, marine biological monitoring, and technical marine developments. The institute was founded in 1980 and is named after meteorologist, climatologist, and geologist Alfred Wegener.

Bremer Vulkan AG was a prominent German shipbuilding company located at the Weser river in Bremen-Vegesack. It was founded in 1893 and closed in 1997 because of financial problems and mismanagement.

An emergency tow vessel, also called emergency towing vessel, (ETV) is a multi purpose boat used by state authorities to tow disabled vessels on high seas in order to prevent dangers to man and environment. The disabled vessel is either towed to a safe haven or kept in place against wind and current until commercial assistance by tug boats has arrived on site or until it has been repaired to the extent of being able to manoeuvre on its own. The need for ETVs as a preventive measure has arisen since the number of available commercial salvage tugs was reduced while potential dangers from individual vessels have increased. E.g. Spain has fourteen, Turkey has eleven, Germany operates eight, Norway has seven, France has five, Sweden three and the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Iceland and Finland each have one official emergency tug boat. Australia also operates emergency response vessels. The United Kingdom's four strong ETV fleet was to be disbanded in September 2011 due to budget cuts but the two vessels operating in Scottish waters received an extension of contract until the end of 2011.

SMS Amazone was the sixth member of the ten-ship Gazelle class of light cruisers that were built for the German Kaiserliche Marine in the late 1890s and early 1900s. The Gazelle class was the culmination of earlier unprotected cruiser and aviso designs, combining the best aspects of both types in what became the progenitor of all future light cruisers of the Imperial fleet. Built to be able to serve with the main German fleet and as a colonial cruiser, she was armed with a battery of ten 10.5 cm (4.1 in) guns and a top speed of 21.5 knots.
Voima was a Finnish and later Soviet steam-powered icebreaker. Laid down at Werft Becker & Co. in Tallinn in 1916 and fitted with engines in Danzig in 1918, the unfinished icebreaker was towed to Helsinki in 1920 and completed by Sandvikens Skeppsdocka och Mekaniska Verkstads Ab in 1923–1924. After two decades of successful service Voima was handed over to the Soviet Union as war reparation in 1945 and renamed Malygin (Малыгин). She remained in service until 1970 and was broken up in 1971.
Pella Sietas was a shipbuilding company in Neuenfelde, Cranz, in southwest Hamburg. It was created from the insolvent firm of J.J Sietas KG Schiffswerft GmbH u. Co. It is located in the estuary of the Este river at Unterelbe. On 29 July 2021 the company filed for insolvency. The insolvency proceedings against the assets of the responsible shipyard are open.
Meyer Wismar is a German shipbuilding company, headquartered in Wismar. After June 1, 1990 it was part of the Deutschen Maschinen- und Schiffbau AG, from 2009 it was part of the Nordic Yards Holding GmbH, and in 2016 it became part of the Lloyd Werft Group. In June 2022 Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) acquired the Wismar site of MV Werften. In November 2022, a lease agreement was signed with Meyer Werft to complete the Global Dream with the yard renamed Meyer Wismar.
Boden-Werft GmbH is a German company, and a former shipyard, located in the port of Kressbronn on Lake Constance. The company was founded in 1919 as a shipyard, but the shipyard business was wound-up in 2011. The shipyard diversified into the building of swimming pools, and into operating a yacht harbour adjacent to the shipyard. These businesses still exist under the names Bodan Schwimmbadbau and Bodan Freizeit & Hafen.
Roald Amundsen, originally named Vilm, is a German steel-ship built on the Elbe River in 1952. Having worked in different areas, she was refitted in 1992 to 1993 as a brig and now serves as a sail training ship. During summer, she usually operates in the Baltic Sea, and usually embarks for journeys to farther destinations for winter, including several trans-Atlantic crossings.

August Wriedt was a weather ship built in 1929 as the fishing vessel Dolly Kühling. She was renamed August Wriedt in 1935. She was requisitioned by the Kriegsmarine in 1940 and captured by HMS Malvernian on 29 May 1941. She served as HMS Maria, a wreck dispersal vessel, until 1950 and was scrapped in 1951.

Spirit of Adventure is a cruise ship operated by Saga Cruises and constructed by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany. As Saga's second new-build vessel, she was originally considered as an option in the cruise line's pursuit to renew its fleet, but the company finalised the order in 2017 after seeing rising profits in its travel business following the announcement of her sister ship, Spirit of Discovery. Her keel was laid on 3 June 2019 and she was delivered on 29 September 2020, but in response to travel restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the inaugural cruise was continuously postponed until she officially debuted on 26 July 2021.
RV Atair is a research vessel owned and operated by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency of Germany (BSH). She entered service in 2021 and replaces a 1987-built research vessel also named Atair.
The German Central Command for Maritime Emergencies is the authority for mutual maritime emergency management in the German EEZ of North Sea and in the Baltic Sea.
