The Big Sky Conference (BSC) is a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA's Division I with football competing in the Football Championship Subdivision. Member institutions are located in the western United States in the eight states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. Four affiliate members each participate in one sport: two from California are football–only participants and two from the Northeast participate only in men's golf.

Valley City State University (VCSU) is a public university in Valley City, North Dakota. It is part of the North Dakota University System. Founded in 1890 as Valley City State Normal School, a two-year teachers' college, it was authorized to confer bachelor's degrees in 1921 and changed its name to Valley City State Teachers College. With an expansion in programs outside teacher education after World War II, it became Valley City State College in 1963. In 1986, it was renamed State University of North Dakota-Valley City and a year later received its current name.
The Great West Conference (GWC) was an NCAA college athletic conference in the continental United States. Originally a football-only league, it became an all-sports entity during the 2008–09 season. The GWC stopped sponsoring football following the 2011 season. The conference became defunct when four of the remaining five full member schools became members of other conferences on July 1, 2013.
The Summit League, or The Summit, is an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletic conference with its membership mostly located in the Midwestern United States from Illinois on the East of the Mississippi River to the Dakotas and Nebraska on the West, with additional members in the Western state of Colorado and the Southern state of Oklahoma. Founded as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities in 1982, it rebranded as the Mid-Continent Conference in 1989, then again as the Summit League on June 1, 2007. The league headquarters are in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The North Dakota Fighting Hawks represent the University of North Dakota, competing as a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) in the NCAA Division I's Football Championship Subdivision. From 1973 to 2008, they played in the NCAA's NCAA Division II, winning the National Championship in 2001. From 1955 to 1972, they competed in the NCAA's College Division where they participated in and won three bowl games.
The Nickel Trophy is presented to the winner of the currently annual football game between the rival University of North Dakota (UND) Fighting Hawks and the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Bison. The two universities are approximately 76 miles apart on the eastern border of North Dakota. The two schools suspended play in 2003 and resumed play in 2015.
The James Madison Dukes are the intercollegiate athletics teams that represent James Madison University (JMU), in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The name "Dukes" is derived from Samuel Page Duke, the university's second president. The Dukes play as members of the Sun Belt Conference. JMU was a charter member of the Colonial Athletic Association, which sponsors sports at the NCAA Division I level. In football, JMU participates in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of Division I, formerly known as Division I-A. The Dukes officially left the CAA and joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2022, participating in Division I FBS football and other sports sponsored by the conference.

The program's first season was in 1947, and it has been a member of the NCAA Division I Summit League since the start of the 2008 season. Its home venue is Erv Huether Field, located on South Dakota State's campus. Rob Bishop is the team's head coach starting in the 2017 season. The program has appeared in 1 NCAA Tournaments at the Division I level, while making 8 at the Division II level. It has won 1 conference tournament championships and 1 regular season conference titles. As of the start of the 2018 Major League Baseball season, 5 former Jackrabbits has appeared in Major League Baseball.
Harold Kraft Memorial Field is a baseball venue in Grand Forks, North Dakota, United States. It is home to the North Dakota Fighting Hawks baseball team of the NCAA Division I Western Athletic Conference. It is named for Harold Kraft, former coach of the North Dakota baseball program who revived the program in 1956 after it had been discontinued in 1921. Kraft coached the program from 1956 to 1981. It has a capacity of 2,000 spectators. On April 12, 2016, the University of North Dakota announced it will be dropping its baseball program after the 2016 season due to budget cuts.
The 2011 Great West Conference Baseball Tournament took place from May 24–28. All eight of the league's teams met in the double-elimination tournament to be held at University of North Dakota's Harold Kraft Memorial Field in Grand Forks, ND. Utah Valley won their second championship by a score of 10-6. As the Great West is a new conference, the league does not have an automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.
Jeff Dodson is an American former college baseball coach. He served the head coach of the University of North Dakota baseball program from 2009 until it was discontinued after the 2016 season.
