North Monterey County High School is a high school in Castroville, California, USA, was established in 1978. It serves the populations of Aromas, Castroville, Prunedale, Royal Oaks, Elkhorn and Salinas. The school is part of the North Monterey County Unified School District. North Monterey County High School is abbreviated on some official documents as NMCHS although it is more commonly known as either "North County" or "NC".
The school serves just under 1,500 students. 56% are Hispanic or Latino, 36% are White, 2% are African American and 3% are Asian. [2] About one-fifth of North County students are designated as English Language Learners.
Before 1978, North Monterey County students traveled to Salinas for high school. Many local residents wanted to have their own high school so that their children would not have to travel. In 1978, voters approved a bond measure to build the high school under the campaign slogan "Yes is Best". In fall 1978, North County opened to a new student body that did not include a senior class. In June 1980, the first class graduated. In 1985, the high school won national recognition from President Reagan as one of the best 100 high schools in the cUS and subsequently won two distinguished California High School Awards in the 1990s. The school was recently[ when? ] recognized at the California Conference of Superintendents for its high Latino graduation rate.
The school's budget is determined by the Board of Trustees of the North Monterey County Unified School District. Internally, the administration of the school is led by three co-ordinators, Jim Oneil, Laurel Gast,and Richard Gutierrez. An activities director oversees school activities and an athletic director manages school athletics. Some funding for the school is controlled by the School Site Council or SIP (School Site Improvement Project). The SIP committee is co-ordinated by the SIP Co-ordinator who is a salaried school official. The current[ when? ] SIP co-ordinator is Laurel Gast. The committee members include parents, staff, the principal and students. The members elect their president.
North County offers a selection of courses to istudents. It has ROP, art, photography and technology courses. NC has an honors and AP program that includes several AP courses. The first AP courses offered at North County were AP US history and English. NC's API test scores place it as average in California, but its API scores in the context of similar schools ranks it as above average.
The NMCHS marching band, directed by Barry Capiaux, has received attention for performances in China, Italy and Hawaii, and participation in President Clinton's second inaugural parade. Likewise, the wind ensemble, symphonic and jazz bands have performed at these localations as well as competitions in Canada, Colorado Springs and the Monterey Jazz Festival. [3]

Hartnell College is a public community college in Salinas, California. Established in 1920 as Salinas Junior College, Hartnell is one of 115 schools that constitute the California Community Colleges, one of the three higher education systems in California. It enrolls nearly 10,000 students, 56% of whom are Latino, and the college is a Hispanic-serving institution. Its name commemorates William Hartnell (1798–1854), who founded the first junior college in California. Hartnell's main campus is located less than a mile west of downtown Salinas. It also has four satellite campuses, one in the Alisal district of Salinas one in King City and another in Soledad and another in Castroville.

The school district serves 5581 pupils in the communities of Aromas, Castroville, Elkhorn, Prunedale, Royal Oaks, Moss Landing, and portions of Salinas, California. The district's average spending per pupil is 4402 and the average teacher salary is 37108. NMCUSD students are 66% Hispanic or Latino, 29% White, 2% Filipino, 1% Asian, and 1% African American. The API scores of secondary schools are average in the statewide context and above average in the context of similar schools while the elementary schools are below average. Kari Yeater is the current Superintendent and she has served in that position since 2012.

Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge is located approximately 11 miles north of Monterey, California, and 3 miles south of Castroville, California, at the point where the Salinas River empties into Monterey Bay. The 367-acre (1.49 km2) refuge encompasses several habitat types including sand dunes, pickleweed salt marsh, river lagoon, riverine habitat, and a saline pond. The refuge was established in 1974 because of its "particular value in carrying out the national migratory bird management program."

Warren Church was an American politician and educator who served on the Monterey County Board of Supervisors from 1965 to 1977. He was a Democrat who represented District 1 which at that time encompassed the northern parts of Monterey County. He served on various committees and published books on local history and genealogy. He was a native of Monterey County.
The Monterey County Rail Extension is a planned commuter rail extension that would bring Caltrain passenger service south of its existing Gilroy, California terminus to Salinas in Monterey County, using the existing Coast Line owned by Union Pacific (UPRR). Implementation of the rail extension will occur over three phases, starting from Salinas and moving north. When construction is complete, there will be four trains operated over the extended line per weekday: two northbound trains that depart from Salinas and travel to San Francisco in the morning, and two southbound trains that return to Salinas in the afternoon.
