North Valley Hospital is a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit general medicine and surgical Critical Access Hospital [1] located in Whitefish, Montana. [2] It is a state-designated community trauma center [3] that serves Whitefish and the broader community of Flathead and Lincoln County. The hospital's chief executive officer is Kevin Abel, [4] and it is affiliated with Kalispell Regional Healthcare. [5] It is a member of the Planetree Alliance. [6]

History

North Valley Hospital's history traces back to Whitefish, Montana's first hospital, which opened in 1905. [7] The hospital was owned by Great Northern Railway and Dr. Hugh E. Houston, a Great Northern Railway physician, served as the hospital's first doctor. [8] Its first patients were mostly people injured in railroad accidents. [7] Mr. Peter Gutensohn and Mrs. J.A. Sampson acquired Northern Valley from the railroad in 1912. [7] They operated the hospital until the hospital building was converted into an apartment building in 1923. [7] The town was without a hospital from 1923 until 1936. [9] The building was converted back into a hospital by Mrs. J.A. Earhart. [7]

Dr. Edith Boyd purchased the hospital in 1941 and operated it until 1947. [7] In 1946, the hospital moved locations and was named after Dr. John B. Simons. [9] The hospital was later named North Valley Hospital Auxiliary. [7] Dr. Simons sold his interest in the hospital to a civic board in 1961. [7] North Valley Hospital Auxiliary was renamed Whitefish Memorial Hospital. [7]

A third hospital was planned and broke ground in 1969. [7] That hospital, named North Valley Hospital, opened in July 1974. [9] It was expanded with a 50-bed Extended Care Center in a 1975 renovation, which cost $1.325 million [9] and was funded entirely with bond sales. [10] The hospital was again expanded in 1988. [9] Quorum Health Resources became the hospital's manager in 1990. [7] North Valley Hospital became a member of the Planetree Alliance network of hospitals in 1992. [6] In May 2016, North Valley Hospital became affiliated with the Kalispell Regional Healthcare system. [11]

Expansion

In 2000, hospital administrators decided to relocate North Valley Hospital. [9] The hospital's new $30 million facility, located on the south end of Whitefish, opened in March 2007. [12] North Valley Hospital built a new facility for North Country Medical Clinic in Eureka, Montana in 2008. That same year, the hospital began operating The Base Lodge Clinic at Whitefish Mountain Resort annually from December until April. [13]

The hospital purchased The Professional Center in Columbia Falls, Montana in August 2010. The center originally opened in 1978 and was renamed North Valley Professional Center following the acquisition. In 2015, the clinic, which offers family medicine and obstetrics, geriatric and pediatric care, reopened at a new 8,700-square-foot location on Talbott Road. [14] North Valley Hospital also opened the West Glacier Clinic in 2010. [15] The clinic is open from June until mid-September. [15] North Valley Hospital acquired Glacier Maternity later that year. [16]

North Valley Embrace Health, a structured outpatient mental health clinic, was opened in 2011. [17] In April 2013, the North Valley Hospital began a $1.7 million expansion, which added a fourth operating room to its main facility. [18] The new operating room included the infrastructure to operate the da Vinci Surgical System. [18] The expansion was completed in October of that year. [19]

North Valley Geriatric Specialty Services opened in January 2014. [20] The hospital also operates North Valley Physical Therapy, a physical therapy and rehabilitation clinic in Columbia Falls, Montana. [21] In September 2014, North Valley Behavioral Health, a division of North Valley Hospital, opened its clinic in Whitefish, Montana, led by J. Douglas Muir, MD, to treat mental health patients. [22] In October 2015, North Valley Hospital announced a collaborative affiliation with Kalispell Regional Healthcare as a result of a joint task force that was launched in July 2013 to explore opportunities for collaboration between the Kalispell and Whitefish hospitals. [23]

Operations

North Valley Hospital has four core departments: emergency department; Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery; Center for Orthopedics; and The Birth Center. [21] North Valley Hospital's emergency department, laboratories and imaging facilities are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. [21] The laboratory has been certified by College of American Pathologists certified since 1997. [21] The hospital's Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery utilizes the da Vinci Surgical System and other technologies to make surgical operations as minimally invasive as possible. [24] [25] Doctors at North Valley Hospital began using the da Vinci Surgical System in 2010. [25] The Center for Orthopedics also utilizes computer-assisted surgery and has orthopedic nurse coordinators to assist in patient care. [26] The Birth Center utilizes obstetricians, certified nurse midwives and family practitioners. [21] In 2016, the center underwent an expansion which added 2,730-square feet of new space and upgrades to existing space. [27] North Valley Hospital has a palliative care practice. [28]

The hospital also offers alternative medicine practices such as acupuncture, massage therapy and water birthing. [29]

Planetree membership

North Valley Hospital is a member [6] of the Planetree network of hospitals, which seeks to promote patient-centered care. [30] The network is organized around ten components. [30] Planetree-inspired initiatives at the hospital include a medical library for patients and community members, patient massages, "spiritual care" programs and animal-assisted therapy. [6]

Flathead River

The Flathead River, in the northwestern part of the U.S. state of Montana, originates in the Canadian Rockies to the north of Glacier National Park and flows southwest into Flathead Lake, then after a journey of 158 miles (254 km), empties into the Clark Fork. The river is part of the Columbia River drainage basin, as the Clark Fork is a tributary of the Pend Oreille River, a Columbia River tributary. With a drainage basin extending over 8,795 square miles (22,780 km2) and an average discharge of 11,380 cubic feet per second (322 m3/s), the Flathead is the largest tributary of the Clark Fork and constitutes over half of its flow.

Northern Transcon

The Northern Transcon, a route operated by the BNSF Railway, traverses the most northerly route of any railroad in the western United States. This route was originally part of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, Northern Pacific Railway, Great Northern Railway and Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway systems, merged into the Burlington Northern Railroad system in 1970.

University of Missouri Health Care

University of Missouri Health Care is an academic health system located in Columbia, Missouri. It is owned by the University of Missouri System. University of Missouri Health System includes five hospitals: University Hospital, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, Missouri Orthopaedic Institute and University of Missouri Women's and Children's Hospital — all of which are located in Columbia. It's affiliated with Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City, Missouri as well. It also includes more than 60 primary and specialty-care clinics and the University Physicians medical group.

University of Missouri Womens and Childrens Hospital Hospital in Missouri, United States

The University of Missouri Women's and Children's Hospital, formerly Columbia Regional Hospital, is the only hospital in Missouri exclusively dedicated to the health of women and children. Eric Thorsen

Eric Thorsen is an American painter and sculptor known for his wildlife sculpture and fish carvings which have won him multiple awards at major art shows nationwide including "Best In World" at the 1992 World Taxidermy & Fish Carving Championships. At age 24 he is the youngest recipient of this award. Breakthrough magazine described him as "More than Promising" and his work has "an uncanny realism". Thorsen has appeared on TV shows and YouTube and his artwork can be found in prominent public spaces, private collections, and on product labels. He has been commissioned to create artwork for corporate entities such as Nike Inc.,Lowe's, Coca-Cola, Walt Disney Attractions, Inc. and national non profit groups. Kalispell Regional Medical Center Hospital in Montana, United States

Kalispell Regional Medical Center (KRMC) is a 288-bed non-profit, tertiary, research and academic medical center located in Kalispell, Montana, servicing the northern Montana region. KRMC is the region's only university-level academic medical center. The hospital is owned by the Kalispell Regional Healthcare and is the flagship hospital of the system. KRMC is affiliated with the University of Montana. KRMC is also an ACS designated level III trauma center and has a helipad to handle medevac patients. Attached to the medical center is the Montana Children's Hospital that treats infants, children, adolescents, and young adults up to the age of 21. The hospital is also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)

Kalispell Medical Equipment is a durable medical equipment supplier in Kalispell, Montana. Kalispell Medical Equipment is a division of Kalispell Regional Healthcare, which was transferred from the Sisters of Mercy's ownership to the community of Kalispell in 1973. Kalispell Medical Equipment was created in 1994. KRH is the largest employer in Northwest Montana, employing upwards of 2900 people and is the largest medical equipment supplier to Northwest Montana, providing rehab mobility products such as wheelchairs and scooters, oxygen concentrators, and ambulatory aids such as walkers. Lockridge Medical Clinic United States historic place

Lockridge Medical Clinic was a historic building notable for its Prairie School-style design by Frank Lloyd Wright, located in Whitefish, Montana, United States. Originally built as a medical clinic in 1963, the building served a variety of other commercial purposes before it was demolished by its owners in 2018.
