Paralympic Games Major international sport event for people with disabilities

The Paralympic Games or Paralympics are a periodic series of international multi-sport events involving athletes with a range of disabilities, including impaired muscle power, impaired passive range of movement, limb deficiency, leg length difference, short stature, hypertonia, ataxia, athetosis, vision impairment and intellectual impairment. There are Winter and Summer Paralympic Games, which since the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea, are held almost immediately following the respective Olympic Games. All Paralympic Games are governed by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).

Hans Anton Aalien is a blind skier from Eggedal, Norway. He won a gold medal in the disabled skiing at the 1988 Winter Olympics event in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with a time of 18 minutes, 52.2 seconds. He participated in track and field athletics at four consecutive Summer Paralympics, from 1976 to 1988, and also competed in swimming in 1976 and 1984. He won one bronze medal in athletics and a silver and a bronze in swimming. At the Winter Paralympics, he competed in cross-country skiing in 1980, 1984, and 1988, and medaled in every event he participated in. He won a total of seven golds, one silver, and one bronze winter Paralympic medal.

Cato Zahl Pedersen is a Norwegian skier and multiple Paralympic gold medal winner. He has won a total of fourteen medals at the Paralympic Games, in both Winter and Summer Paralympics. He has no arms, having lost both in a childhood accident.

Uganda at the 1980 Winter Paralympics

Uganda competed at the 1980 Winter Paralympics in Geilo, Norway.

Tofiri Kibuuka is a Norwegian athlete. Ugandan by birth, he competed for Uganda before obtaining Norwegian citizenship. He has participated in both the Winter Paralympic Games, in cross-country skiing and in the Summer Paralympic Games, in mid- and long distance running. Active from 1976 to 2000, he won five Paralympic silver medals, and one bronze.

Argentina at the Paralympics

Argentina participated in the inaugural Paralympic Games in 1960 in Rome, with a delegation consisting in five swimmers, and has taken part in every edition of the Summer Paralympics since then. The country made its Winter Paralympics début in 2010, with a two-man delegation in alpine skiing.

Colombia at the Paralympics

Colombia made its Paralympic Games début at the 1976 Summer Paralympics in Toronto, with competitors taking part in track and field, table tennis and wheelchair basketball. Norway at the Paralympics

Norway has participated in every edition of both the Summer and Winter Paralympics, except the second Summer Games in 1964. It was one of the seventeen countries to take part in the inaugural Paralympic Games in 1960 in Rome, where it sent a delegation of eleven athletes. Norway was the host country of both the 1980 Winter Paralympics, in Geilo, and the 1994 Winter Paralympics, in Lillehammer.

Portugal at the Paralympics

Portugal made its Paralympic Games début at the 1972 Summer Paralympics, where it was represented solely by a men's team in wheelchair basketball. They were eliminated at the preliminary stage of the competition, with one victory and three defeats. Portugal was then absent from the Paralympic Games until the 1984 Summer Games, where its athletes won the country's first fourteen medals, including three gold in track and field and one in boccia. Portugal has competed at every subsequent edition of the Summer Paralympics, but -almost uniquely among Western European countries- has never taken part in the Winter Games.

Norway at the 2004 Summer Paralympics

Norway competed at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. The team included 34 athletes—21 men and 13 women. Norwegian competitors won five medals at the Games, three gold, one silver and one bronze, to finish joint 38th in the medal table.
