Nuria Esperanza Piera Gainza (born 29 June 1960) is a Dominican journalist specializing in investigative journalism. Piera is CEO of NCDN, [6] a news production company in CDN (channel 37); she is also owner of Provideo. [7] [8]

Biography

Piera was born in Santo Domingo to immigrants from Spain: her mother was Basque and her father was Catalan. [3] [9] [10] Piera was orphaned at 10 years old when her father, journalist José Enrique Piera Puig, was killed in 1970 by the authoritarian regime of Joaquín Balaguer. [11]

Career

In September 2013, a news investigation led by Piera revealed that the Papal Nuncio of Santo Domingo, Józef Wesołowski, whom Pope Francis had dismissed, was not removed from office due to a dispute he held for three years with Puerto Rican Cardinal Roberto González Nieves, as stated in the Italian and Dominican press and as insinuated by the archbishop of Santo Domingo Cardinal Nicolás de Jesús López Rodríguez, [12] [13] but instead due to the consumption of alcoholic beverages in areas of dubious reputation and abuse of children and adolescent males, [14] [15] This emerged as another scandal of pederasty in the Catholic Church. In 2014, EFE listed her as one of the most influential women in Ibero-America. [17] [18]

In May 2023, human rights organizations Amnesty International and Citizen Lab confirmed that a mobile device belonging to Nuria Piera was targeted by Pegasus spyware at least three times between 2020 and 2021, likely in connection to Piera's investigations of governmental corruption and impunity. This is the first confirmed use of spyware against a journalist in the Dominican Republic. [19]

Personal life

Nuria married journalist and broadcaster Pablo McKinney, from whose union was born Nuria's only daughter, Leslie Paola McKinney. [20]

Yamilet Peña Abreu is an elite artistic gymnast from the Dominican Republic who won a gold medal at the 2014 World Challenge Cup and the 2012 Pan American Championship in vault and a bronze medal at the 2012 World Cup. She is known for her execution of the Produnova—a handspring double front on vault. She qualified for the vault finals at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2011 and the 2013 World Championships.

Józef Wesołowski was a Polish prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He was an archbishop from 2000 until being laicized by the Holy See in 2014. He was the Apostolic Nuncio to the Dominican Republic from January 2008 until he was recalled in August 2013. Authorities in the Dominican Republic were investigating allegations of child abuse against him. In June 2015, the Vatican announced he would stand trial on charges of possessing child pornography, for which he faced a possible prison term. He died on 27 August 2015 of a heart attack before going to trial.
