Winfred Nyiva Mwendwa is a Kenyan politician. She was the first Kenyan woman to serve as a cabinet minister.

Early life and education

She was educated at Alliance Girls High School, [1] and was one of the first ethnic African teachers to be posted to The Kenya High School in the mid-1960s, teaching Domestic Science. She was elected for the post of Kitui West Constituency MP three times, in 1974 and 1992 representing KANU and in 2002 representing NARC. [2] At the 2007 elections she contested the seat on the ODM-Kenya ticket, but lost to Charles Mutisya Nyamai. [3] She was elected the first Kitui County woman representative in the 2013 Kitui local elections on a Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya (WDM-K) ticket. [4] In 2016, she announced her intention to retire from active politics 40 years since her debut. [5]

Political life

Mwendwa was appointed the Minister for Culture and Social Services on May 9, 1995, becoming the first female minister in Kenya. [6]

She caused a national disfavour in 1995 when she travelled to women’s conference in Beijing in 1995 and took a hairdresser as a part of her delegation. Mwendwa herself defended the decision by stating that being a delegation leader, she must take care of her appearance. [7]

Her husband Kitili Maluki Mwendwa was Kenyan chief justice and politician. Kitili Mwendwa died in a traffic accident in 1985. He was at the time the Kitui West MP, his seat was taken at the subsequent by-election by his brother Kyale Mwendwa. His other brother, Eliud Ngala Mwendwa is also a former Kenyan minister. [8]

She lives in Matinyani village in Kitui District. Nyiva Mwendwa has two children, Kavinya and Maluki. [7]

It borders seven counties i.e Machakos and Makueni counties to the west, Tana River County to the east and south-east, Taita Taveta County to the south, Embu to the north-west, and Tharaka-Nithi and Meru counties to the north. Kitui became the headquarters of Kitui County after the adoption of the new constitution and the devolved government.

Raphael Tuju, EGH is a Kenyan politician. In 2002—after a career as a journalist, TV producer, and real estate investor—Tuju was elected to the parliament from where he continued to mould his political career to date.

Charity Kaluki Ngilu is a Kenyan politician and the second governor elected for Kitui County. She unsuccessfully vied to be President of the Republic of Kenya in 1997. She served as Minister for Health from 2003 until 2007 and Minister of Water and Irrigation from April 2008 to 2013. She also served as Cabinet Secretary for Land, Housing and Urban Development from 2013 until 2015.

Kenneth Otiato Marende, born 7 January 1956, was the Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya's 10th Parliament. He was elected Speaker on January 15, 2008. Prior to his election as Speaker, Hon. Marende served as the MP for Emuhaya constituency, from 2002 to 2007. Marende was a candidate for Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya's 13th Parliament, but was defeated by former Bungoma senator Moses Wetangula who garnered 215 votes ahead of Marende who managed 130.

Cecily Mutitu Mbarire EGH A.K.A Karinda is the serving governor of Embu County having been sworn into office on August 25, 2022. She is the chairperson of Kenya`s ruling party, United Democratic Alliance, and the patron of The Kenya Scouts Association. She was educated at Muragari Primary School and Sacred Heart Kyeni Girls. She has had an extensive career in politics spanning over 20 years, she rose to the limelight having been nominated MP in the year 2002–2007. In her political career, she represented Runyenjes Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya from 2007 to 2013. Her advocacy for special interest groups culminated in her nomination to Parliament from 2017 to 2022. In the 11th Parliament, she served as vice chairperson in the Public Accounts Committee. She held membership positions in various Parliamentary committees, such as Committee on Energy, Communication and Information, Committee on Transport, and Public Works and Housing. In the 12th Parliament, she served in the Committee on Energy, Committee on Appointments and Committee on Procedure and House Rules. Cecily Mbarire also served as Chairperson of KEWOPA. In her push for equality and vouching for women to take up leadership positions, She advocates for women to pursue competitive elective seats with male politicians, and not to seek 'gender sympathy' in attaining Positions.

Peter Anyang' Nyong'o is a Kenyan politician and author who is the Governor of Kisumu County. He is a former Secretary-General of Orange Democratic Movement. Professor Nyong'o was the acting party leader from March 11 until late May when Raila Odinga was in the United States and was elected to the National Assembly of Kenya in the December 2007 parliamentary election, representing the Kisumu Rural Constituency. He was the Minister for Medical Services and previously the Minister for Planning & National Development. He previously served as the Senator of Kisumu from 2013 to 2017.

Naomi Namsi Shaban is a Kenyan politician from the border town of Taveta. Born of pare descent she became the first woman elected to represent the Taveta Constituency in Parliament in 2002 through a Kenya African National Union (KANU) ticket. She defended the seat in 2007 election through KANU and won. Later she joined the National Alliance Party (TNA) and was re-elected to represent Taveta Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya in 2013. In 2017 she was re-elected again for a record fourth term in a highly controversial way as her main opponent Morris Mutiso cried foul play and sought for the results to be annulled on grounds of irregularities and illegalities.

Kitili Maluki Mwendwa is a former Chief Justice of Kenya. He served between 1968–1971 and was succeeded by Sir James Wicks.

Eliud Ngala Mwendwa was a Kenyan teacher and politician. He was a member of the Kenyan delegation to the 1960 Lancaster House Conference, which negotiated the country's independence from the United Kingdom. Mwendwa then served as Minister for Labour within President Jomo Kenyatta's first post-independence 15-member cabinet. He ultimately served as the Minister for Labour and Social Services from 1963 until 1974 under Kenyatta.

Phoebe Asiyo is a former parliamentarian of Kenya, ambassador to the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), mother, and grandmother. She was UNIFEM's ambassador from 1988 to 1992. She was the first woman elevated to the position of Luo elder for her efforts to promote education for girls, women's rights, and gender equality in Kenya. Fondly called Mama Asiyo, she has dedicated her life to improving the political arena in Kenya, the role of women and girls, and those affected by the HIV epidemic. She was the first woman in Kenya with its 42 communities to become elder.

Wavinya Ndeti EGH(born 8 November 1967) is a Kenyan politician and a business woman who is serving as the 2nd Governor of Machakos County. She previously served as a Member of Parliament for the Kathiani Constituency in the 10th Kenyan parliament and an assistant minister in the ministry of youth affairs and sport from 2008 to 2013. She was the first woman to be elected as a member of parliament in Machakos county since independence. She was a CCU candidate in 2013 and WDM-K candidate in 2017 for Machakos Governor.

Dr. Julius Makau Malombe,EGH is a Kenyan politician and the first and current elected Governor of Kitui County. He is elected on a Wiper Democratic Movement-Kenya (WDM-K) which he won the 2013 elections garnering 163,904 votes. He defended his seat on Wiper ticket in the 2017 general election but lost to Charity Ngilu coming third behind former senator David Musila however he recaptured the seat and won after the 9th August 2022 gubernatorial elections with 198,004 votes defeating former senator David Musila who had 114,606 votes and Jonathann Mueke with 10,639 votes. As the pioneer governor of Kitui he is credited with much of the development gains made in the region. On 12 December 2022 Dr. Malombe was awarded the Elder of The Golden Heart by President William Ruto.

Kitui High School is a boys boarding secondary school in Kitui County and the only national boys secondary school in the county. It has a population of 1,500 students. It is located about 2 kilometers from Kitui town along the Kitui-Mbusyani road.

Nimrod Mbithuka Mbai is a Kenyan politician and the current Member of Parliament for Kitui East Constituency. He was elected on a UDA ticket in the August 8th elections. He won after garnering a total of 14, 256 votes against 10, 899 votes garnered by NARC's Militonic Mwendwa Kitute. The then incumbent Member of Parliament, Major (Rtd) Mutua Muluvi was fourth with 5, 436 votes. He is an ex-police officer and served as security aide to the late Francis Nyenze and later to the current Machakos County Governor Alfred Mutua. Governor Mutua appointed him to his government in 2013 after Mbai resigned from his police service. Mbai caused controversy for his rape remarks against Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu because of the governor's support for poll boycott called by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. He later apologised following public outcry and pressure from women's rights group FIDA Kenya

Aisha Jumwa Karisa Katana is a Kenyan politician currently serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage in Kenya. She previously served as a Member of Parliament representing Malindi Constituency in Kilifi County and Commissioner of the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC) from 2017 to 2022, the Woman Representative for Kilifi County from 2013 to 2017, and as Councillor for Takaungu Ward from 1997 to 2007. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Leadership and Management from International Leadership University [ILU] and Executive Diploma in Governance from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Rachael Kaki Nyamai is a Kenyan politician. She is a member of parliament for Kitui south constituency in Kitui County under Jubilee Party.
