Olutayo Charles Adesina is a professor of history at the University of Ibadan. [1] [2] His research interests are in the fields of economic history of West Africa, history of development, and Nigerian history. Adesina is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters. He has at different times served as the Head of the History Department at the University of Ibadan. [3]

Adesina was educated at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU, formerly University of lfe), where he earned his bachelors (in 1985), masters (in 1989), and his doctorate degrees (in 1994) all in history. From 1989 through 1991, Adesina was engaged as a Teaching Assistant at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (1989–91), and a Lecturer Grade III at the Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, Nigeria from 1991 to 1993. He joined the faculty of the Department of History, University of Ibadan, in 1993, rising to the rank of full professor in 2007. [4] Over time, Adesina has served as the departmental head three times (2001–2003, 2006–2008 and 2019–2021), and as the Director of the university's Centre for General Studies.

In 1994, Adesina was a Grantee of the United States Information Agency at the Boston College, Massachusetts. He has also received several distinguished visiting fellowship awards, including the Fellowship of Salzburg Seminar, Austria (2001); Fellow of the Atlantic History, Charles Warren Center, Harvard University (1998); the African Visiting Fellow, Rhodes Chair of Race Relations, St Antony's College, Oxford (2004/2005); and, Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (2009). [5]

In 2004 and 2014, Adesina was a visiting professor at Kennesaw State University, Georgia, US. In October 2019, he was the Distinguished Visiting Guest Lecturer at the Centre for African Studies, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai, China. [6]

Adesina is a current Editor of Africa Review . [7] In May 2017, Adesina was elected as president of the Society of Nigerian Archivists, taking over from Gabriel Alegbeleye. [8] In 2018, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters. [9] [10]

In April 2024, the British Academy awarded Adesina the prestigious Global Professorship. As of April 2024, he is one of only two Nigerians to have received the award since it began in 2018. The Global Professorship program is supported by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. [11] [12] For this award, Adesina received the equivalent of $1,000,000.

Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a federal university in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria. The university was founded in 1961 and classes commenced in October 1962 as the University of Ife by the regional government of Western Nigeria, which was led by Samuel Ladoke Akintola. It was renamed "Obafemi Awolowo University" on 12 May 1987, so by the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida led military administration, in honour of Obafemi Awolowo (1909–1987), the first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, who initially thought of the idea of establishing the university.

Chief Ògúnwán̄dé "Wán̄dé" Abím̄bọ́lá is a Nigerian academician, a professor of Yoruba language and literature, and a former vice-chancellor of the University of Ife. He has also served as the Majority Leader of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Chief Abimbola was installed as Àwísẹ Awo Àgbàyé in 1981 by the Ooni of Ife on the recommendation of a conclave of Babalawos of Yorubaland.

Olajide Aluko was a Nigerian scholar who in October 1977 became the first professor of international relations in Sub-Saharan Africa. He was also said to be the Doyen of International Relations. He was a prolific writer and conference speaker who wrote and editted several books and journals concerning international relations.

Oladele Adebayo Ajose was a Lagos prince who was the vice-chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University. He was an early advocate of primary health care in Nigeria and the first tenured African professor at the University of Ibadan and in Nigeria. He was one of the earliest Africans to hold a professorial chair.

Victor Adenuga Oyenuga, CFR was a Nigerian Professor Emeritus of Agricultural science and pioneer President of the Nigerian Academy of Science. He was the first Emeritus Professor of the University of Ibadan and the first Nigerian professor of Agriculture.

Cyril Agodi Onwumechili was a Nigerian physicist, academic administrator, and professor of geophysics at the University of Ibadan and later University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He was the fourth Vice Chancellor of the University of Ife from January 1979 to December 1982 and the former President/Vice Chancellor of the Anambra State University of Technology, Enugu, Nigeria, from January 1983 to December 1986. He delivered the Ahiajoku lecture on 20 November 2000. He was the first Nigerian geophysicist and the second president of the Nigerian Academy of Science. He was elected as president of the Academy in 1979 to succeed Professor Victor Adenuga Oyenuga, the first emeritus professor of the University of Ibadan and the first African professor of Agricultural science.

Oluremi Comfort Sonaiya is a Nigerian politician, educationalist and writer. She was Nigeria's only female presidential candidate in the 2015 general election under the platform of the KOWA Party. But recently lost her bid to Dr. Adesina Fagbenro Byron in representing the party again in 2019 election.

Wale Adebanwi is a Nigerian-born first Black Rhodes Professor at St Antony's College, Oxford where he was, until June 2021, a Professor of Race Relations, and the Director of the African Studies Centre, School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, and a Governing Board Fellow. He is currently a Presidential Penn Compact Professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Abiodun Alao is a Nigerian academic and professor of African studies at King's College London and the programme director of the African Leadership Centre. Gbemisola Adeoti is a Nigerian academic and poet. He is a professor of literature in the English Department at Obafemi Awolowo University.
