The Adeyemi federal university of education is a federal government higher education institution located in Ondo City, Ondo State, Nigeria. [1] [2] It is affiliated with Obafemi Awolowo University for its degree programmes. [3] [4] Adeyemi College of Education was named after Canon M. C. Adeyemi (one of the earliest educationists in Yorubaland) [5] in recognition of his immense contribution to educational development in the then Ondo Province.

It was established in 1963 to produce qualified teachers to teach in secondary schools and teachers' training colleges and to conduct research and experiments on methods of teaching at all levels of education in Nigeria. It formally commenced operations on 22 May 1964 with 93 students, 24 women and 69 men, and has metamorphosed into a first class College of Education in Nigeria and in the West Africa sub-region. [6] Presently, it has five schools – Arts and Social Sciences, Education, Languages, Sciences, and Vocational and Technical Education – with a total of 28 academic departments.[ citation needed ] The College is a combination of the various institutions that sprang up in the sixties to cater to the development of Manpower in secondary schools and teacher training colleges in the Western region. Teachers college (up to 1963), The Ransome Kuti College of Education, The Olunloyo College of Education and Ohio Teachers Project, Ondo all constituted the solid foundation on which it was built. See for instance, Adeyemi College of Education now boast of 9 Hostels in total which comprises 6 Female hostels and 3 Male hostels. [7]

The institution also runs the SIWES programme that enables students to gain practical experience while attached to workplaces. [11]

University Status

The federal government of Nigeria under the Goodluck Jonathan presidency upgraded the College to a full-fledged university of education in May 2015. [12] However, the new administration of President Mohammed Buhari decided to put the new status on hold in August 2015 because of the absence of an enabling law. The National Assembly finally passed the Adeyemi Federal University Establishment bill in December 2018 and the bill was assented by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in December 2021.

The Delta State University, Abraka - popularly known as DELSU - is a State government-owned university in Nigeria with the main campus located at Abraka, Delta State and its sub-campus at Oleh. The Oleh campus was established with the 1995 Amended Edict. The university is a multiple-campus university having two campuses within a distance of about 52 km apart. Currently, with a student population of about 22,000, the university offers a range of programmes from the full-time certificate, diploma and degree programmes to part-time evening and weekend degree programmes. DELSU offers postgraduate studies up to a doctoral level. DELSU owns a staff/student counselling centre, an e-learning centre, student accommodation and sporting facilities amidst other infrastructures. It is one of over twenty-five state-owned universities which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission.

University of Cross River State also known as UNICROSS is a state-owned tertiary institution with four campuses spread across four Local Government Areas of the state. The University was formerly known as the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH). It was renamed in February of 2021 by a bill passed at Cross River State House of Assembly which was then approved by the former Governor of the State, Benedict Ayade. The change of the tertiary institution's name was to enable the varsity function as a conventional University, which provides the opportunity to offer more professional courses rather focusing on tech-related courses. Federal College of Education Abeokuta (FCEA), is a public institution authorized with issuance of National Certificate in Education (NCE) to successful graduated students. It was founded in 1976 at Osiele, Ogun State, south west Nigeria. The current Provost is Dr. Rafiu Adekola Soyele. The college runs three programmes: the NCE, a degree in affiliation with University of Ibadan and Lagos State University, and PGDE.

Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo also known as FCE OYO was established on 5 October 1977, as Federal Advanced Teacher's college (Special). The institution, according to a UNDP/UNESCO 1996 report (NIR/87/008) "... Has the best qualify Staff in Special Education not only in Nigeria but in West, North, East and Central Africa." The College is the only one of its kind in Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. It has the largest conglomeration of disabled students that could be found in any Higher Institution in Nigeria and the largest concentration of specialized facilities for teaching and training of teachers of the Handicapped in Nigeria. During its 40th anniversary celebration, the college gave special recognition award to former President Olusegun Obasanjo whose military administration brought about the upgrading of the Institution from the then Federal Advanced Teachers College to a College of Education with the mandate to award the National Certificate of Education (NCE) in 1977.
