The OSE Class 460 is the first class of electric trainsets (EMU) in Greece and, together with the 621 class, it is the second most recent series of railcars operated by TRAINOSE after the 3107 class. They are OSE rolling stock and belong to the Desiro Classic generation, while they were manufactured by Siemens in 2006. They come in line with the 660 class but their main difference is that the 460 is electric-powered with five coaches while the 660 is diesel-powered by two coaches but they have the same manufacturers and gauge.
Class 460 trainsets can be coupled to another trainset on a double coupling to form an EMU-10, controlled by the driver of the leading cab. [1] In total, there are 20 such trainsets, numbered 460 101/460 201 – 460 120/460 220. They have an electric engine and reach speeds of up to 180 km / h, and have a capacity of 304 people [2] Their weight is 150 tonnes. [3] The traction of the train is carried out by two pantographs that touch in aerial cables. Their voltage is 25 kV 50 Hz AC. [2]
Series 460 is used in Thessaloniki suburban Thessaloniki-Larissa line, and on the Athens Suburban Railway. [4]
In 2004, OSE proceeded to order 20 trainsets on the Desiro family of 5 coaches by Siemens AG [3] which, in collaboration with Greek shipyards and based on the Desiro platform, supplied OSE with the Desiro EMU-5 trains. They were built in the Greek Shipyards of Skaramangas. In 2004, one of them came to Greece [5] and eventually received by OSE in 2006. [6] On 14-2-2009 the routes Ano Liossia – Airport with these trains started. [7] Already in 2016, it was operating on the suburban line of Athens to the airport, [8] Chalkis [9] and Kiato, [10] as well as in Thessaloniki, in the line to Larissa, [11] however, with the gradual electrification of the railway lines, they were also launched on the Piraeus Line. On 28 March 2016, the first Desiro EMU-5 series 460 was launched in Dhekelia. [12]
The coloring of the wagons consists of purple horizontal strips on white, covering the largest surface of the vehicles. The doors are yellow. Later, it was applied to the majority of vehicles, advertising overlay on biodiversity, by DEI, as well as other advertisements [13] as an attempt to repair their bad aesthetic image after being vandalized by graffiti. Overlapping remains so far on several vehicles as well as other types of rolling stock.[ citation needed ]
The Siemens Desiro is a family of diesel or electric multiple unit passenger trains developed by Siemens Mobility, a division of the German Siemens AG conglomerate. The main variants are the Desiro Classic, Desiro ML, Desiro UK and the later Desiro City, Desiro HC and Desiro RUS. The trains are mostly used for commuter and regional services, and their rapid acceleration makes them suitable for services with short distances between stations. The design is flexible, and has become common in many European countries.
The Proastiakos is Greece's Commuter rail service, run by Hellenic Train, on rail infrastructure owned by the Hellenic Railways Organisation (OSE) (lines) and GAIAOSE. These services connect a participating city's central railway station to important locations such as a city's port or airport, as well as its suburbs and occasionally nearby towns and cities.
Hellenic Train S.A., formerly TrainOSE S.A., is a private railway company in Greece which operates passenger and freight trains on OSE lines. Hellenic Train employs train crews, operators and manages most of the rail services throughout the Greek railway network, leasing rolling stock owned by GAIAOSE except for ETR 470 trains.
Hellenic Train Class 120, also known as Hellas Sprinter, is a class of electric locomotives operated by Hellenic Train. It is part of OSE's rolling stock. They were manufactured by Siemens and Krauss-Maffei in Germany.
Kiato railway station is a station in Kiato in the northern Peloponnese, Greece. The station is located 1 km west of the town, near the A8 motorway between Athens and Patras. It was opened on 9 July 2007. The station is served by the Athens Suburban Railway towards Piraeus and Hellenic Train local services to Aigio. It should not be confused with the now-closed station on the old Piraeus–Patras railway, which is located northeast of the current station, closer to the coast of the Corinthian Gulf.
Afidnes railway station is a station on the Piraeus–Platy railway line in Afidnes, in the northern part of the Athens metropolitan area, in the municipality of Oropos, East Attica, Greece. It was inaugurated on 8 March 1904 and reopened on 6 May 2005. It is owned by OSE, however services are provided by Hellenic Train through the Athens Suburban Railway from Athens to Chalcis. The station was featured in a 1974 episode of the YENED Greek soap opera Border Station.
Thessaloniki railway station, or Thessaloniki railway station is the main central passenger railway station and terminal of Thessaloniki, Greece's second-largest city. It is located in the central quarter of Xirokrini on Monastiriou Street and was inaugurated on 12 June 1961, the passenger station replaced the older and much smaller passenger station which now handles the city's cargo rail, hence the "new" sometimes used in the name.
Larissa railway station is the main station for Larissa in Thessaly, Greece. Located in a residential area, close to the city centre, it is served by InterCity trains between Athens and Thessaloniki, Express services to Kalambaka, Regional services to Volos and the southern terminus for Line 1 of Proastiakos services to Thessaloniki. Larissa railway station should not be confused with Larissa Station in Athens.
Platy railway station is the railway station of Platy in Imathia, Central Macedonia, Greece. Opened in 1894 in what was then the Ottoman Empire, it is located southwest of the residential area, at the junction of the Piraeus–Platy railway and Thessaloniki–Bitola railway 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) southwest of the town centre. The station is served by Intercity trains between Athens and Thessaloniki and since 9 September 2007 by Thessaloniki Suburban services or Proastiakos to Katerini and Larissa, Edessa, Florina and Thessaloniki.
The Thessaloniki Regional Railway, is a three-line Proastiakos commuter rail service connecting the city of Thessaloniki with its metropolitan area and other regions beyond, including Imathia, Pella and Serres.
The Edessa railway station is the railway station of Edessa in Central Macedonia, Greece. The station is located north of the city on the Thessaloniki–Bitola railway, and is severed by both Local and Thessaloniki Suburban Services. The station lies some 77 kilometres (48 mi) from Thessaloniki.
The Athens Suburban Railway, officially the Athens Suburban and Regional Railway, is a commuter rail service that connects the city of Athens and its metropolitan area with other places in Attica, Boeotia, Corinthia and the city of Chalcis in Euboea.
P.A.Th.E./P, which stands for Patras–Athens–Thessaloniki–Idomeni/Promachonas is a higher-speed rail line in Greece which is partly completed and partly under construction. The section between Athens and Thessaloniki is completed and allows a travel time of 3 hours 20 minutes, a reduction of about three hours.
Patras railway station is a railway station in Patras in the northwestern Peloponnese, Greece. The station is located in the center of the city, beside the north port on Piraeus–Patras line and Patras–Kyparissia line and is severed by both Proastiakos Patras Services. Pending the completion of the Athens Airport–Patras railway, it is also the starting point of TrainOSE bus lines to Aigio, Diakopto and Kiato, where connecting train services to Athens Airport and Piraeus are available. Diakopto is also the terminus of the unique rack railway to Kalavryta.
The OSE class 220, also known as DE2000 or Marlboro, due to the coloring of the front, reminiscent of the packaging colors of the homonymous tobacco industry, is a series of diesel-electric locomotives operated by TRAINOSE and RCLG and is part of the OSE fleet. It was built in 1998 at the ADTranz factories in Kassel, Germany, as the A.471 series, but in 2003 OSE acquired another batch. The locomotives were put into operation by OSE after the completion of their construction.
The OSE class A.101, also known as Κruppάκι-Κruppάκια, due to its small size, only 10 meters long, is, along with the class A.201, the oldest series of locomotive operated by TRAINOSE and is part fleet of the OSE. It is a diesel-powered, built in 1962 by Krupp for SEK and was put into operation at OSE in 1971, with its foundation. It has a MTW GTO 6 diesel engine with combined power of 478 kW and reaching speeds of up to 70 km / h in freight and local trains, and 30 in shunting operations.
The TRAINOSE Class 520, also known as the AEG DE IC-2000N, is the oldest class of trainsets operated by TRAINOSE. They are diesel-powered, they can be DMU-5 or DMU-4 and were built in 1989 and 1995 as class 601 and 651, respectively, from the cooperation of West Germany's AEG and East Germany's LEW, and for about two decades they were the spearhead of the fast- interurban quality trains (InterCity). Sometimes, DMU-4 units circulate coupled with another truck. In total, there are 20 such trainsets, 12 DMU-4 and 8 DMU-5.
In Greece, there are two similar classes of Stadler GTW trainsets, namely the 560 and the 4500, which are operated by TRAINOSE and are part of OSE rolling stock. These are suburban DMUs with two coaches, of type G.T.W. 2/6, which were built by a consortium of Stadler, Bombardier and Hellenic Shipyards and were put into operation by OSE, between 2003 and 2004. The trainsets are either standard or metre gauge, but with the same technical characteristics. They can be coupled in multiple coupling with up to three railcars.
Rodopoli railway station is a railway station that serves the community of Rodopoli, in Serres in East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece. The station is located close to the town center and within the settlement limits. The station building is unstaffed.
Line A1 is an Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos) line in Athens, Greece, managed by Hellenic Train. The service connects Piraeus with the Airport. The line shares a part of its course with lines A2 and A4 as well as Metro line 3, but also with line A3 at Athens. The first Suburban line was inaugurated on 30 July 2004, using 17 OSE Class 560 DMUs between Larissa Station and the Airport. With the completion of the electrification of the sections of the line to Athens in 2017 and Piraeus in 2018. The line now exclusively uses OSE class 460 EMUs rolling stock.
