OSMECON is an undergraduate medical conference hosted annually by Osmania Medical College and its associated hospitals in Hyderabad, India.
OSMECON is a three-day event, typically scheduled in August each year. Started in 2010 as a platform for medical undergraduates to present their research, the conference's oeuvre has since expanded to include numerous workshops, clinical case discussions, quizzes, guest lectures, panel discussions and symposia, with international delegates in attendance since 2014.
One of the main goals of OSMECON in recent years has been to equip participants with current clinical skills as well as an understanding of basic and clinical research techniques. Another main focus has been the recent developments, future opportunities and challenges that medical research presents at all levels of training, with particular emphasis on the Indian context.
The conference reached out to other medical colleges in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. It was a two-day event conducted on the 25 and 26 of August 2011 with 100 delegates. The following were introduced for the first time.
Dr. B. Sesi Kiran, Former Director of NIN gave a lecture on Research Methodology and Dr. Sreekanth Vemula, [2] Eminent Neurophysician, graced the event.
It was a 3-day event held from 31 August to 2 September with 400 delegates.
The highlight of the conference was the introduction of workshops for undergraduate medical students.
Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao, Director CCMB & Dr.Kalpagam Polasa, former Director of NIN inaugurated the event and spoke of the research scenario in the country.
Dr. Gullapalli Nageswara Rao, Founder of LV Prasad Eye Hospital, delivered a guest lecture.
Theme of the conference: Mental Health Awareness
The Panel discussion anchored by Prof Pari Plavi remains one of the most productive events at Osmecon. Dr Mahender Vyasabattu, Director of Oslers Academy, well recognized in the field of international postgraduate training, Prof Manisha Sahai, MD. DM and DNB examiner, Dr Kanaka Durga, Scientist & Geneticist and Dr Mamidi, ICMR-B Scientist participated and shared their expertise. The video clips are still viewed by thousands of postgraduate training aspirants.
There were 800 delegates with 7 from Nepal. The following events were introduced:
Padma Shri Dr. Kakarla Subba Rao, internationally renowned radiologist and Father of Radiology in India, inaugurated the event.
Padma Shri Dr. L.Narendranath, eminent Orthopaedic surgeon delivered a guest lecture on 'IT Solutions in Health Care'.
Theme of Poster Presentation : 3-D Printing in Medicine, Novel Drug Delivery Systems
It was a 3-day event with the participation of over 1,000 delegates and had 5 workshops on:
1) Basic Life Support Skills,
2) Basic Surgical Skills,
3) ECG Interpretation
4) Basic Medical imaging
5) Obstetrics & Neonatology,
6) Orthopaedic skills and Trauma Care.
Padmashri Dr. A.Gopala Krishna Gokhale (Cardiothoracic Surgeon, First Minimal Access Heart Surgeon & First Heart-Kidney combined Transplant Surgeon) delivered the Inaugural Address.
Dr. G.V. Ramana Rao [3] (Executive Partner, Head of Emergency Medicine Learning Centre (EMLC) and Research division at GVK-EMRI) was the Guest of Honour
Dr. G. Jagdishwar Goud, [4] renowned Surgical Oncologist and Robotic Surgeon spoke about trends in Robotic Surgery.
Dr. M. Pari Plavi, distinguished alumna of Osmania Medical College, former Professor and Head of Department of Anatomy at Osmania Medical College, Founder-Convener of OSMECON, discussed the Neuroscience of Adolescence and Meditation.
Theme of Poster Presentation: Cancer Immunotherapy, Personalised Medicine
There were about 1,100 delegates attending from all over the country.
Dr. K. Srinath Reddy, [5] President of Public Health Foundation of India delivered the inaugural address.
Dr. Patanjali Dev Nayar, [6] Regional Advisor, Disability & Injury Prevention, WHO SEARO delivered a lecture on "Manoeuvring crossroads to human sexuality".
Theme of the conference: Adolescent & Reproductive Health.
Over 1,400 delegates participated in the eighth edition, with over 120 international delegates, taking the event to a bigger stage. Two new workshops were introduced:
1) Chest Sounds Interpretation
2) Forensic Autopsy
The 9th edition of OSMECON was held on August 10, 11 & 12 at Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad.
Padmashree Dr. Dasari Prasad Rao, [7] former Director of Nizam Institute of Medical sciences, Hyderabad graced the event as the Chief guest.
Dr. Arvinder Singh Soin, [8] reputed Hepato-Biliary surgeon(1st successful liver transplant in the country). He spoke about "Will AI in medicine make doctors redundant?".
The conference added 4 new workshops to its list.
The 10th Edition of OSMECON was held in August, 2019 from the 8th to the 10th.

Dr. Hemalatha, National Institute of Nutrition [13] [ circular reference ] NIN Director.
Dr. Ravi Wankhedkar, National Resident of IMA, New Delhi also graced the event.
The Annual UG Conference was attended by nearly 2000 delegates from 7 states across the country as well as from 5 different countries, still expanding its reach even further. Few futuristic and technological areas of medical research were also presented during the symposiums 'Nanotechnology in cancer treatment' and '3D Bioprinting'.
Dr. Devi Shetty, cardiac surgeon and chairman of Narayana Health, was the Chief Guest of the occasion. His efforts in making healthcare accessible and affordable through Narayana Health earned him the prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards.
Dr. Gandhi P.C. Kaza, Chairman of Truth Labs, India's independent non-profit Forensic Science laboratory, was the guest speaker at the event.
The theme of the conference, "Reprogramming the Code of Healthcare Education," revealed the need for innovation and transformation in medical learning.
OSMECON 2021 introduced "Colloquium," a virtual academic conference that preceded "Symposium." This academic event fostered discussions and solutions to common societal issues among participants.
Furthermore, a dedicated "Emergency and Trauma Care Workshop" was incorporated into the conference’s list of workshops.
In response to the pandemic's challenges, OSMECON 2021 ingeniously blended both online and offline events, optimizing proceedings and ensuring widespread participation.
The 12th edition of the event was inaugurated by none other than renowned Ophthalmologist, Dr. G.N Rao, founder of LV Prasad Eye Institute. Dr. Rao, in his rousing speech, talked about how the college is renowned for its academics and research and encouraged students to work together with their peers, follow time management to reach greater heights and excel in the profession.
The conference this year had 12 workshops, each giving a hands-on experience pertaining to different topics of medical importance.
The four active events, including the Case, Poster, Paper Presentation and the Medical Symposium witnessed participation from students around the country and beyond.
The nine passive events that ligated medical knowledge with a touch of creativity were thoroughly enjoyed by the delegates. It was a race against time as events like the Medquiz, Dare to Diagnose and Debate saw huge participation. Events like Art Attack, Graphilia, Invictus, Shuttermedics, Spell Bee and medical dumb charades created a huge buzz as they brought out the creative talents of the delegates as well.
All in all, this year's conference witnessed the participation of over 2100 delegates.
The 13th edition of OSMECON was held on 29th, 30th of September 2023 and 01st of October, 2023.
The guest of honor for the event was the Founder & Chairman of Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad, Dr D. Nageshwar Reddy.
The Guest Speaker for the year was Dr. Sairam Reddy Palicherla, Co-founder & Chief Scientist Officer at Urban kissan & Director of Heartfulness Institute, India. His valuable message, "Let food be thy medicine - modern farming for new generation" has to echo in every youngster's heart & mind to build a healthy community in coming days.
The conference had 12 workshops, 4 active events & 10 passive events.
This year, chest sounds in pulmonology and ECG in cardiology were the new additions to the workshops.
The 4 active events namely paper presentation, case presentation, poster presentation and medical symposium were outstanding. Medical symposium has been the heart of the event.
Talking about the passive events, here is where both creativity & knowledge go hand in hand. Medventure was reintroduced this year. Medventure is a medical treasure hunt. The delegates had a huge adrenaline rush being, their version of Sherlock holmes in our home grounds.
Wrapping it up, OSMECON 2023 hosted nearly 3000 delegates from all over the country and beyond.

EMSA was founded in Brussels in 1990. It integrates medical students in Europe through activities organized for and by medical students. EMSA's network and platform encourages medical students from various countries in geographical Europe to actively engage in matters related to health care, medical education, medical ethics, medical science, and general societal well-being, by acting as a conduit for increased interaction and sharing of knowledge between European medical students in these respective areas.
Osmania Medical College, formerly known as Hyderabad Medical School, is a public medical college in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. It was founded in 1846 by the 5th Nizam of Hyderabad and Berar, Afzal ud Dowla, Asaf Jah V. The college was originally affiliated to Osmania University system, now it is affiliated to the Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, and the Osmania General Hospital. After the establishment of the Osmania University in 1919, the school was renamed Osmania Medical College, after the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, Mir Osman Ali Khan. The College stands 48th in the National NIRF Medical University Rankings 2024.
The Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS) is a non-profit organization that promotes the delivery of essential surgical care to underprivileged people in low-income countries. Its objective is also to reduce death and disability caused by any disturbances in normal functioning of the mind or the body that would require surgery. The CNIS emphasizes education in surgical work and techniques. It also works in surgical development and research.
Sheikh Zayed Medical College, established in March 2003, is a public medical college located in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab, Pakistan. It is named in honor of Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The Medical College is affiliated with Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Rahim Yar Khan which has 900 beds and is the biggest hospital of Rahim Yar Khan District.

Iuliu Hațieganu University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, is the oldest medical education institution in Transylvania, a continuation of the Faculty of Medicine which was founded in 1919, as a part of the Superior Dacia University. The university has over 6,000 national and international students, 2,400 resident physicians, as well as over 1,100 teachers and researchers. It was named in honor of the scientist Iuliu Hațieganu. The university is classified as an "advanced research and education university" by the Ministry of Education.
The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM), located on the Health Science Campus of Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is one of seven schools of medicine in Pennsylvania that confers the Doctor of Medicine degree. It also confers Ph.D and M.S. degrees in biomedical science, and offers a Narrative Medicine program.
Gandhi Medical College and Hospital is a medical college in Hyderabad, India affiliated with Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences. The college was originally affiliated to NTR University of Health Sciences.
The National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) is an Indian public health, nutrition and translational research centre located in Hyderabad, India. The institute is one of the oldest research centres in India, and the largest centre, under the Indian Council of Medical Research, located in the vicinity of Osmania University. The institute has associated clinical and paediatric nutrition research wards at various hospitals such as the Niloufer Hospital for Women and Children, the Government Maternity Hospital, the Gandhi Hospital and the Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad.
Harold M. Frost was an American orthopedist and surgeon considered to be one of the most important researchers and theorists in the field of bone biology and bone medicine of his time. He published nearly 500 peer-reviewed scientific and clinical articles and 16 books. According to the Science Citation Index, he is one of the most cited investigators in skeletal research.
Boora Narsaiah Goud is an Indian politician in the state of Telangana. Joining in the Bharat Rashtra Samithi political party in 2009 he has won as a Member of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha representing Bhongir constituency in 2014 election and lost in 2019.
Chemfluence is a national level technical symposium of the Department of Chemical Engineering, Alagappa College of Technology, Anna University, India. Started in 1994 as a college level symposium, it is now in its 29th year. Paper presentations, poster presentations, guest lectures, workshops and events form an integral part of the symposium. The symposium mainly aims at nourishing budding chemical engineers with knowledge of core concepts and providing an opportunity to showcase their talents. With more than 20 events across 3 days, it is one of the most prestigious tech events of South India. It is also one of the very few symposiums in India to host a cultural fest in association with university departments. Chemfluence is conducted annually by the Association of Chemical Engineers (ACE), the official student body of Department of Chemical Engineering, Anna University.
Timothy J. Broderick, F.A.C.S., is Professor of Surgery and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati, where he has been on the faculty since 2003. He also is Chief of the Division of Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Surgery and is Director of the Advanced Center for Telemedicine and Surgical Innovation (ACTSI). He has flown on the NASA KC-135 parabolic laboratory and dived in the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) program to develop advanced surgical technologies for long duration space flight.
Raghu Ram Pillarisetti is an Indian surgeon, and the Founder and Director of KIMS-Ushalakshmi Center for Breast Diseases at KIMS Hospitals. Pillarisetti is the founder of Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation, and Pink Connexion, a quarterly newsletter about breast healthcare.
Idupuganti Bhooshana Rao was a leading figure in forensic medicine in India. He was the Founding-President of the Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine established in 1972. He was born in Dornakal, Andhra Pradesh, India.
ATMOS is the annual techno-management festival of BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, located in Hyderabad, India. It is known for a wide range of events, such as workshops, quizzes, lectures, technical exhibitions and competitions. Among the notable events conducted annually during it are the national level quiz Enigma and BITS MUN Hyderabad. Started in 2012, ATMOS aims at improving the technical culture among Indian colleges as well as providing a platform to showcase their abilities. In its sixth year now, ATMOS is growing rapidly with participation from students, academics, entrepreneurs and speakers from all over India.
The International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS) is an international medical society with around 4,000 members. The membership comprises mostly orthopaedic surgeons along with sports scientists, sports physicians and sports physical therapists. The members are from some 92 different countries and are members of their local orthopaedic sports medicine societies or similar associations. Members may also be associated with their global regional orthopaedic sports medicine society such as the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Asia-Pacific Knee, Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine Society, the European Society for Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy and the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Artroscopia, Rodilla y Deporte in particular.
Keiki R. Mehta, an Indian ophthalmologist, medical researcher and writer, is considered by many as the father of Phacoemulsification in India. He is the Chief Surgical and Medical Director at Mehta International Eye Institute, a Mumbai-based specialty eye hospital founded by him. He is known to be the first surgeon to perform a Radial keratotomy in India and is credited with the development of the first soft eye implant in the world, and the Keiki Mehta BP Valve Glaucoma Shunt, a medical implant used in the treatment of neovascular‚ congenital and uveitic glaucoma. He is a recipient of several honours including the Grand Honors Award of the National Eye Research Foundation, Chicago and the Triple Ribbon Award of the American Society for Cataract and Refractive Surgery. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian honour of the Padma Shri, in 2008, for his contributions to Medicine.
Nene Elsie Nwada Obianyo is a Nigerian paediatric surgeon, delegate from Nigeria to the World Federation of Associations of Paediatric Surgeons and one of the two Nigerian surgeons who first successfully separated conjoined twins in Nigeria at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) Enugu in 1988.
