Obuch OjwokAkuo is a politician from South Sudan. He was the speaker of the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly from 2019 to 2021. He is a member of the SPLM who represents Eastern Equatoria. Ojwok is a Pari,an ethnic group in Lafon County,Imatong State. [1] He became speaker on December 16,2019 after the resignation of Anthony Lino Makana,who was accused of corruption. [2] [3] Ojwok,after becoming speaker,said he wanted to restore the reputation of parliament. [4] Ojwok was the first deputy minister of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism when the post was created on August 26,2011 after the independence of South Sudan on July 9,2011. [5]
Salva Kiir Mayardit,also known as Salva Kiir,is a South Sudanese politician who has been the President of South Sudan since its independence on 9 July 2011. Prior to independence,he was the President of the Government of Southern Sudan,as well as First Vice President of Sudan,from 2005 to 2011. He was named Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in 2005,following the death of John Garang.

The South Sudanese Civil War was a multi-sided civil war in South Sudan between forces of the government and opposition forces. In December 2013,President Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar and ten others of attempting a coup d'état. Machar denied trying to start a coup and fled to lead the SPLM –in opposition (SPLM-IO). Fighting broke out between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and SPLM-IO,igniting the civil war. Ugandan troops were deployed to fight alongside the South Sudanese government. The United Nations has peacekeepers in the country as part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Armed clashes took in Wau State from late June 2016 to January 2019 between the Dinka-dominated Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and local opposition forces,consisting of tribal Fertit militias as well as fighters claiming allegiance to Riek Machar. The South Sudan Opposition Alliance is a coalition of political parties and armed groups in South Sudan that opposed the government of President Salva Kiir. It was formed in February 2018 in Addis Ababa,Ethiopia,by nine groups. In September the alliance acceded to a revised peace deal with the government that also included the main rebel faction,the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition,but some of the member groups disagreed with the decision and split from the alliance. The pro-deal SSOA has experienced continued tension between its members,as well as with the government.

The COVID-19 pandemic in South Sudan is part of the ongoing worldwide pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The virus was confirmed to have reached South Sudan on 5 April 2020. The first four confirmed cases were all UN workers.
