Hon. Jemma Nunu Kumba (born 1966) is a South Sudanese politician. She is the current Minister of Gender,Child and Social Welfare of South Sudan. She founded the Sudan women Parliamentary Caucus in 2004 at the start of the comprehensive peace agreement. She was chosen by the SPLM as the speaker of the Revitalised Transitional National Legislative Assembly (R-TNLA). [2] [3] She became the first woman to preside over the parliament of South Sudan. [4]
Jemma Nunu Kumba was born in Tombura County of Western Equatoria. During her childhood,she moved from Tombura County to a refugee camp in Central Africa. She later attended secondary school at Juba Day in Juba from 1983 to 1986 in Juba. [5] In 1991,Comrade Jemma left Khartoum and effectively joined her husband in Kidepo Valley,one of the SPLM/A liberated areas by then.
In the 1990s,Kumba worked as administrator of a company with ties to the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and then as a coordinator for the New Sudan Council of Churches. [5] When her husband was appointed Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) representative to Namibia,Kumba moved with him. While in Namibia she enrolled at the University of Namibia,studying Economics and Management Science,and graduated with Bachelors Degree in Public Administration and Political science from 1999 to 2002. In 2002,she participated in peace talks on behalf of SPLM in Kenya. After the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005,she served as a member of parliament in Khartoum. [5] Kumba is a member of the SPLM party. [6]
Kumba was the first woman to serve as governor after the CPA. [7] She was appointed Governor of the Western Equatoria State in 2008. [5] [7] She lost the April 2010 election for governor to Bangassi Joseph Mario Bakosoro. [8]
In June 2010,she was appointed as GOSS Minister of Housing and physical planning. On 26 August 2011 Hon. Jemma Nunu was reappointed the Minister for Housing and Physical Planning in the Cabinet of South Sudan. [9] On January 9 2012,Hon. Jemmac was appointed as a member of the National Constitution Review Commission (NCRC). On 3 August 2013,President of South Sudan Salva Kiir Mayardit shuffled several ministers and deputies,moving Kumba to Minister of Electricity,Dams,Irrigation &Water Resources. [10] [11] By July 2016 she was Minister of Wildlife Conservation and Tourism. [12]
In October 2015,President Kiir Mayardit,appointed Kumba to serve as deputy secretary general of SPLM. At the same time,Salva Kiir dissolved national secretariats and tasked Kumba with recommending new party secretariats. She replaced Anne Itto Leonardo in the position of deputy secretary general of SPLM. [13] Kumba was sworn in on 13 November 2015. [14]
Commrade Jemma Nunu Kumba was appointed Minister of Gender,Child and Social Welfare in 2018. After the signing of the R-ARCSS,in 2019 Comrade Jemma was appointed as the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.
On 23 July 2021 Hon. Jemma was nominated by the SPLM Leaderships as SPLM Candidate for the position of Speaker of the Revitalized Transitional National Legislative Assembly.
She is married to Festo Kumba,the former minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries and belongs to Zande people. [5] The couple has four children. [5] [15]
Western Equatoria is a state in South Sudan. It has an area of 79,343 square kilometres (30,635 sq mi). Its capital is Yambio. The state was divided into counties,each headed by a County Commissioner. Western Equatoria seceded from Sudan as part of the Republic of South Sudan on 9 July 1956. On October 2,2011,the state was divided into Amadi,Maridi,and Gbudwe states,and Tambura State was split from Gbudwe state on January 14,2015. Western Equatoria was re-established by a peace agreement signed on 22 February 2020.

The South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF),formerly the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA),is the army of the Republic of South Sudan. The SPLA was founded as a guerrilla movement against the government of Sudan in 1983 and was a key participant of the Second Sudanese Civil War,led by John Garang. After Garang's death in 2005,Salva Kiir was named the SPLA's new Commander-in-Chief. As of 2010,the SPLA was divided into divisions of 10,000–14,000 soldiers.

He served as governor of Western Equatoria after winning an election over Jemma Nunu Kumba,serving from 26 May 2010 to August 2015,at which time he was arrested by security officials of South Sudan for suspicions to his being linked with the arrow boys,an armed local defense force originally formed to protect local communities from attacks by the Lord's Resistance Army,later released on April 27,2016.
Clement Wani Konga is a Mundari leader who fought in the Anyanya independence movement in the south of Sudan in 1969−72. He then joined the army of Sudan and rose to the rank of major general. In 2004 he made peace with the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and was appointed interim governor of Central Equatoria in South Sudan. In August 2015 he was dismissed from his post by president Salva Kiir Mayardit. He continued to be active as chairperson of the Mundari Community.
Ajonye Perpetua Paya is a South Sudanese constitutional lawyer,judge and human rights activist. Until 2013 she was a first class justice in the South Sudan judiciary. She assisted in drafting the 2005 interim constitution of Sudan. She served in the cabinet of Central Equatoria State in 2011,then in the cabinet of President Salva Kiir Mayardit,who dismissed her in May 2013. Since then she has held leadership positions in the South Sudan Law Society and has often spoken on civil rights issues including women's rights and gender-based violence. In 2023 she headed the Secretariat of the Judicial Reform Committee (JRC) of South Sudan.
Elijah Malok Aleng was a South Sudanese public servant,general,and politician,from [Twic Dinka/Twi East county] in Jonglei State. He was born on 28 November 1937 at Thianwong village when his family was living among the Pen people in Angakuei in Baidit,about 20 miles northeast of Bor town. His family,which is originally from Awulian in Wangulei,Twic East County,migrated back to be with fellow Awulian kinfolks. He attended Malek Primary School (1950–1953),and then Juba Intermediate School and Juba Commercial Senior Secondary School,graduating He then attended Free University of the Congo,in the present Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),and later got a scholarship to study in Fribourg Catholic University,Switzerland,from which he obtained a master's degree in economics in 1972. In 1975 he obtained another Masters in Development Studies and Economic Planning from Wolfson College,Cambridge in the United Kingdom. In his memoirs:the Southern Sudan:Struggle for Liberty,named Chief Deng Biar Abit,leader of the Awulian clan,Paul Logali,former finance minister of Southern Sudan regional government and Akec Kwai Biar,former Bor District Commissioner and his cousin as the people who positively influenced him.
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement-in-Opposition,also known as the anti-governmental forces (AGF),is a mainly South Sudanese political party and rebel group that split from the Sudan People's Liberation Movement in 2013,due to political tensions between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar over leadership of the SPLM. Tensions grew between forces loyal to Kiir and Machar and South Sudan plunged into the South Sudanese Civil War.
