Off the Record (OTR) Youth Counselling [1] is a mental health charity working across the London Boroughs of Croydon, Merton and Sutton which provides a range of free support services for young people. It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019.

Contents

Founded in Croydon in 1994 to provide free, independent and professional counselling for 14 – 25-year-olds, the charity expanded over the years to include further areas of work including mental health work in BME communities; a young carers service; a specialist counselling service for young refugees, online counselling, workshops and mental health support in schools.

Since 2019, Off The Record's counselling service in Merton operates in Vestry Hall.

Memberships

Off the Record is a member of Youth Access, the national membership organisation for youth information, advice and counselling services (YIACS), [2] [3] [4] and is a BACP-accredited service. [5]

Funding

Off The Record is supported by Croydon, Sutton & Merton local authorities and local Clinical Commissioning Groups as well as a range of charitable funders including Comic Relief [6] and the Wimbledon Foundation. [7] At the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, Off the Record were selected to perform the coin toss for the Men's Singles Finals. [8]

In 2018, Travis Perkins marked the opening of a new branch in Beddington Lane, Croydon by donating £250 to Off the Record. [9]

Partnerships

In 2021, Off the Record launched a project with London Southbank University (LSBU) and the Croydon BME Forum to train London barbershops to test blood pressure in a UK-first project. [10] [11] [12] [13]

Awards

In 2019, Off The Record was one of ten charities selected from more than 370 organisations across the UK to win a GSK IMPACT Award for outstanding contributions to improving the UK's health and wellbeing. [14] The award is run in partnership with The King's Fund.

Social prescribing is when a Social Prescribing Link Worker engages with a patient to support them with a plan which can be a series of signposting or referrals to support in the community, in order to improve their health and wellbeing. The concept has gained support in the NHS organisations of the United Kingdom as well as in Ireland and the Netherlands and forms part of the NHS Long Term Plan. The referral mechanisms, target groups, services offered through social prescribing vary across settings. However, the process usually involves screening for non-medical needs and referrals to support services that are typically offered by community-based organizations.

Mental health in the Republic of Ireland is the subject of state and community sector intervention in Ireland. The Irish state devolves responsibility for mental health to the Department of Health. Community groups and charities also provide support in the prevention and management of mental illness as well as suicide prevention.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sutton Link</span> Proposed tram line

The Sutton Link was a proposed new tram line in South London, between Colliers Wood via St Helier to Sutton. Proposed since the early 2000s, consultations on the proposed route took place in the late 2010s. A preferred route was announced in February 2020. Financial issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic led Transport for London to put the project on hold in July 2020. Despite being identified in the London Plan, the project was cancelled in 2023, due to a "weak business case" and lack of funding.

42nd Street is a mental health charity in Greater Manchester, United Kingdom, for young people aged 11–25 years old. It provides free and confidential services to young people who are experiencing difficulties with their mental health and emotional wellbeing, by offering young person-centred and rights-based approaches. It was established as a drop-in service in Manchester city centre in 1980 and moved around 2012 to its current location, the Space Youth Intervention Centre, 87-91 Great Ancoats Street, Manchester M4 5AG.
