Ogwen is the name of an electoral ward covering part of the village and community of Bethesda in Gwynedd, Wales. It elects councillors to the community council and Gwynedd Council.

A community is a division of land in Wales that forms the lowest tier of local government in Wales. Welsh communities are analogous to civil parishes in England. In 2016 there were 870 communities in Wales.

The scenic Llŷn Peninsula and most of Snowdonia National Park are in Gwynedd. Bangor is the home of Bangor University. In the northern part of the county, the other main settlements are Caernarfon, Bethesda, Ffestiniog, Llanddeiniolen, Llanllyfni, Porthmadog and Pwllheli. The largest settlement in the south is Tywyn.

Description

The ward covers the centre of Bethesda, its High Street and schools. It is bordered to the west by the Afon Ogwen, with the Afon Llafar defining its southern border. To the south and the east of Ogwen is the ward of Gerlan, which includes the Gerlan area and the village of Rachub. [1]

The Afon Ogwen is a river in north-west Wales draining from some of the greatest peaks in Snowdonia before discharging to the sea on the eastern side of Bangor, Gwynedd.

Afon Llafar

Afon Llafar is a river in the Carneddau, Snowdonia. It rises where many streams flow down the slopes of Yr Elen, Carnedd Llewelyn and Carnedd Dafydd to join together in the valley below the cliffs of Ysgolion Duon. It is one of several similarly named streams in Wales. The river flows north-west along Cwm Pen-llafar, with Caseg River joining it near Gerlan, and discharges into the River Ogwen in the heart of Bethesda. Afon Llafar has the same etymology as the River Laver in North Yorkshire, England, with both being derived from Brittonic laβar, meaning "talkative, boastful".

Rachub village in Dyffryn Ogwen (Ogwen Valley), Gwynedd, Wales

Rachub is a small village of about 900 people in Dyffryn Ogwen, Gwynedd, Wales, about half a mile away from the nearby, larger village of Bethesda. It forms part of Llanllechid community, which has a population of 889 as of the 2011 census.

Community Council

Ogwen is a community ward to Bethesda Community Council, electing seven of the thirteen community councillors. [2]

County Council

Between 1973 and 1989 Ogwen was the name of a ward to Gwynedd County Council, electing two county councillors (one of only two county wards to elect more than one). [3]

From 1995 Ogwen became a ward to the new Gwynedd Council, electing one county councillor. [4] [5] Since 1995 it has been represented by Plaid Cymru, with Ann Williams the councillor from 2004 [4] to 2017. At the May 2017 election the seat was won by Plaid Cymru's Rheinallt Puw. [6]

Gwynedd Council is the governing body for the principal area of Gwynedd, one of the subdivisions of Wales within the United Kingdom. The Council administrates internally through the medium of Welsh.

Plaid Cymru is a social-democratic political party in Wales advocating Welsh independence from the United Kingdom within the European Union.

Arfon is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Although the constituency is relatively large by geographical area, it is a predominantly urban rather than rural seat, with the majority of the population living in the two towns on which the constituency is based, Bangor and Caernarfon. 2017 Welsh local elections

Local elections were held in Wales on Thursday 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities, including the Isle of Anglesey, which was last up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. These local elections were held alongside local elections in Scotland and parts of England.
