Background

On October 31, 2023, Tsai released "Someday, Somewhere", the theme song for the Netflix series At the Moment. [1] Shortly afterward, Richard Craker, one of the song's co-writers, revealed on Instagram that he had traveled to Taiwan to work on another project with Tsai. [2]

On November 17, McDonald's celebrated its 40th anniversary in Taiwan, announcing Tsai as the brand's new ambassador and featuring her in the anniversary short film The Simple Happiness. [3] The film revisited four decades of McDonald's history in Taiwan across five eras. Tsai had previously endorsed McDonald's in several campaigns, including the "Shake Shake Fries" promotions in 2003 and 2005, and the "McRib" campaign in 2004. [4] [5]

At the anniversary event, McDonald's confirmed that Tsai had written and performed the 40th anniversary theme song. [6] A lyric video was released on the company's official YouTube channel, and on November 19 Tsai announced the single's official release the following day. [7]

Composition

The track is rooted in an upbeat Motown-inspired style, characterized by lively melodies and catchy lyrics. It conveys the message that simple happiness is always within reach. [8] According to Tsai, the refrain "Oh La La La" represents the instinctive sound of satisfaction when enjoying food, symbolizing the joy found in life's simplest pleasures. [9]

The single marked another collaboration between Tsai and Richard Craker, who had previously co-written "Ugly Beauty", "Hubby", and "Someday, Somewhere". Tsai noted that the two had developed mutual trust and often shared a quirky sense of humor during the creative process. [7] She described herself as indecisive during production, relying on remote discussions with Craker for arrangements and mixing. Finding the right instrumental textures proved particularly challenging, and Tsai likened herself to a beginner experimenting with different sounds through online research before completing the track. [10]

Music video

The official music video premiered on November 24, 2023, directed by Dawson Pon. Blending surrealist visuals with theatrical elements, the video presents a whimsical fantasy world centered on three concepts: "a heart that never grows old", "savoring the moment", and "cherishing loved ones". [8] Tsai appears with braided heart-shaped pigtails and high-slit costumes, referencing McDonald's "I'm Lovin' It" slogan. She explained that the video was designed to convey a sense of happiness and fulfillment. [11] The narrative features Tsai descending in a hot-air balloon and landing in a chaotic office setting, where she transforms into a glamorous queen. Leading a playful, hypnotic dance sequence, she injects joy and magic into the mundane office environment. [10]

Awards

In February 2024, the inaugural Golden Wolf Awards announced its nominees, with Tsai receiving a nomination for Best Vocal Performance for "Oh La La La". Additionally, Tungus Chan, Yali Chiu, and Johnny Ho were nominated for Best Styling Design for their work on the music video.
