A post office called Ohoopee was established in 1875, and remained in operation until 1953. [4] The community took its name from the nearby Ohoopee River. [5]
The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Ohoopee as a town in 1907. [6] The town's municipal charter was repealed in 1995. [5]

By 2020, its population grew to 3,449. The city limits include Johnson State Prison on the northeast side of town. Wrightsville is part of the Dublin Micropolitan Statistical Area.
