Okaku Constituency

Okaku Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshana Region of Namibia. It had 19,262 inhabitants in 2004^[1] and 10,384 registered voters in 2020^[update].^[2] Its district capital is the settlement of Okaku. Okaku falls under the Ondonga Traditional Authority.

Politics

Okaku constituency is traditionally a stronghold of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) party. Its first councillor is Henock ya Kasita who served the constituency from Namibian independence until 2010. In the 2004 regional election he received 5,538 of the 5,672 votes cast.^[3] Ya Kasita was followed by Joseph Kapya Endjala who was the head of Cosdec centre in Ondangwa.

In the 2015 local and regional elections the SWAPO candidate won uncontested and became councillor after no opposition party nominated a candidate.^[4] The SWAPO candidate won the 2020 regional election by a large margin. Gerson Kapenda obtained 3,261 votes, followed by Foibe Nashongo of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC), an opposition party formed in August 2020, with 970 votes.^[2]

Education

Schools in the constituency include Oshikondiilongo Combined School, Otala Combined School, Okaku Primary School, Ankambo Primary School, Nengushe Secondary School, Eloolo Combined School, Onyeka Combined School, Iindangungu Combined School and Ontinda Primary School.

Development

Okaku has 4 ELCIN parishes,1 Engelical and one Catholic parish. It has two clinics, one named after the constituency and the other one at Eloolo near the church. Most of the infrastructure in Okaku has electricity through the Ministry of Mines and Energy's Rural Electrification Programme.

Except for the main roads between Oshakati and Ondangwa and between Ondangwa and Oshikango, most of the roads in the constituency are gravel. The communication network is available in the area. Residents do their shopping in Ondangwa and Oshakati.

As one of the constituencies in the flood prone area, Okaku suffered from the flood during the rainy season. The road between Ondangwa and the T-junction on the way to Oshakati was under flood water in 2009. A number of schools cannot be reached during the rainy season. Okaku has a gravel road from Okapya to Ongha via Onanime.

Endola is an electoral constituency in the Ohangwena Region of Namibia, on the border of Angola. It had 36,659 inhabitants in 2004 and 14,100 registered voters in 2020. The district centre is the settlement of Endola. Ferdinand Ingashipola Shifidi became a councillor of the constituency in November 2014 and was re-elected in 2015 and in 2020.

Elim Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Omusati Region of Namibia. It had 15,210 inhabitants in 2004 and 7,883 registered voters in 2020. Its district capital is the settlement of Elim.

Okahao Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Omusati Region of Namibia. It had 26,035 inhabitants in 2004 and 12,390 registered voters in 2020. Its district capital is the town of Okahao the birth place of Namibia's Founding Father Sam Nujoma. Okahao Constituency was created in 1998 from existing constituencies of Omusati, following a recommendation of the Second Delimitation Commission of Namibia, and in preparation of the 1998 general election.

Onesi Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Omusati Region of Namibia on the border to Angola. It had 12,935 inhabitants in 2004 and 9,941 registered voters in 2020. Its district capital is the settlement of Onesi.

Otamanzi Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Omusati Region of Namibia. It had 13,495 inhabitants in 2004 and 7,427 registered voters in 2020. Its district capital is the settlement of Otamanzi, it further contains the settlements of Onandjo, Kelimwe, Etilyasa, Onanyala, Onkani, Iiyekeya, Epato, Amarika, Etsikilo, and Onkaankaa, Okeendapa

Okatana Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshana Region of Namibia. It had 15,562 inhabitants in 2004 and 9,111 registered voters in 2020. Its district capital is the settlement of Okatana.

Ompundja Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshana Region of Namibia. It had 4,423 inhabitants in 2004 and 2,520 registered voters in 2020. Its constituency office is situated in Enguwantale.

Uuvudhiya Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshana Region of Namibia. The constituency office is situated in Engombe. In 2004 Uuvudhiya had 4,357 inhabitants and 2,869 registered voters.

Eengodi Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia. It had 14,995 inhabitants in 2004 and 7,740 registered voters in 2020.

Omuntele Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshikoto Region on the northern part of Namibia. It had 21,884 inhabitants in 2004 and 9,854 registered voters in 2020. The district capital is the settlement of Omuntele.

Onayena Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia. The district capital is the settlement of Onayena.

Onyaanya Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia. It had 13,474 inhabitants in 2004 and 11,434 registered voters in 2020. Its district capital is the settlement of Onyaanya.

Ondangwa Urban is an electoral constituency in the Oshana Region of Namibia. It was created in August 2013, following a recommendation of the Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia, and in preparation of the 2014 general election. It had 23,233 inhabitants in 2016 and 17,967 registered voters in 2020. The constituency office is situated in Ondangwa.

Nehale IyaMpingana Constituency is an electoral constituency in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia, named after Nehale lya Mpingana, one of Namibia's National Heroes. It was created in August 2013, following a recommendation of the Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia, and in preparation of the 2014 general election. The administrative centre of Nehale lyaMpingana is the settlement of Okoloti. As of 2020 the constituency had 5,879 registered voters.

Ondangwa Rural is an electoral constituency in the Oshana Region of Namibia. It had 13,613 inhabitants in 2016 and 7,682 registered voters in 2020. The administrative centre of the constituency is the settlement Eheke.

Henock Sheya ya Kasita was a Namibian politician who was the deputy minister of lands and resettlement from 2008 to 2010. He previously was deputy minister of mines and energy from 2003 to 2008, SWAPO chief whip in the National Council from 1994 to 2003. He was a member of the National Council for Oshana Region from 1993 to 2010, and a founding councilor for Okaku Constituency in 1993 until 2010. He was also deputy chairperson for the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) National Group from 1996 to 2000, and became its chairperson from 2000 to 2004.
