The Oktoberfest Rugby 7s was a rugby sevens tournament held in Munich, [1] Germany, during the Oktoberfest event. In the first edition in 2017, Australia won [2] the title in the final against Fiji, the Olympic champion from Rio. In 2019, South Africa won against Fiji, who made it again to the finals. The home team, Germany, finished 4th after losing to the All Blacks Sevens from New Zealand [3] in the bronze medal match. In 2020 and 2021, the Oktoberfest Rugby 7s, had been cancelled due to the corona pandemic. The tournament will return to the Olympic Stadium in Munich 2022.

Over 30,000 spectators from Germany and the World, mostly wearing fancy dress, celebrated in 2019 on the stands and created a unique atmosphere.

Live acts, DJs and an entertainment program fill the breaks between the games over two days.

In 2017 and 2019, the German TV station “Sport 1” broadcast the tournament live. [4] Apart from this, the Oktoberfest Rugby 7s broadcasts in over 60 countries worldwide.

Format

In 2017 the teams at the inaugural event were drawn into three pools of four teams each. Each team played all the others in their pool once. The top two teams from each pool advance to the Cup brackets while the top 2 third place teams also compete in the Cup/Plate. The other teams from each group play-off for the Challenge Trophy.

In 2019 only 8 teams took part at the tournament and were drawn into 2 pools of four teams each.

The 2019 Singapore Sevens was a rugby sevens tournament played at the National Stadium in Singapore on 13–14 April 2019. It was the eighth edition of the Singapore Sevens and the eighth tournament of the 2018–19 World Rugby Sevens Series.

The 2020 USA Sevens was held in Los Angeles, played at Dignity Health Stadium in Carson in a return to California after a decade in Las Vegas. The rugby sevens tournament was the sixth event of the 2019–20 Sevens World Series for men's teams, and the seventeen edition of the USA Sevens. South Africa won the tournament, defeating Fiji by 29–24 in extra time.

The 2020 Canada Sevens was a rugby sevens tournament held at BC Place in Vancouver on 7–8 March 2020. The tournament was the seventh event of the 2019–20 Sevens World Series for men's teams, and the fifth edition of the Canada Sevens.

The qualification process for the 2021 Rugby World Cup began on 9 August 2019 with 12 teams qualifying to the tournament which was to be held in New Zealand. The 2021 Rugby World Cup was postponed by one year in March 2021 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Napolioni Ratu Bolaca is a Fijian rugby sevens and rugby union player, who has played for the Fiji national rugby sevens team since 2019. At club level, he has played for Fijian Drua. Bolaca was the top point scorer in the 2019–20 World Rugby Sevens Series. He was part of the Fijian squad that won the rugby seven tournament at the delayed 2020 Summer Olympics.

Jiuta Naqoli Wainiqolo is a Fijian rugby union player who currently plays for Toulon in the Top 14 competition in France and for the Flying Fijians 15s and 7s teams. During the 2020 Summer Olympics, he was a member of Fiji's Men's Rugby 7s team, which won the gold medal.

The 2021–22 World Rugby Sevens Series was the 23rd annual series of rugby sevens tournaments for national men's rugby sevens teams. The Sevens Series has been run by World Rugby since 1999.

The 2022 Spain Sevens was held as two rugby sevens tournaments on consecutive weekends in January that year. The first was hosted at Estadio Ciudad in Málaga and the second at Estadio La Cartuja in Seville. The 2022 South Africa Sevens was the third tournament within the 2022–23 World Rugby Sevens Series and the 22nd South Africa Sevens tournament. The event was won by Samoa 7s, defeating New Zealand 7s by 12–7 in the final. It was held on 9–11 December 2022 at the Cape Town Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa.
