Oliver Coates (born in London in 1982) is a British cellist, film composer, music producer and electronic musician. He has released ten studio albums many of which have been released on RVNG Intl. [1]

Career

Born in London in 1982, Oliver Coates took up the cello at the age of six. He went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he received the highest score ever awarded to a student. [2] [3] [4]

After graduating there, he worked with Massive Attack, Goldie, Ben Frost, Micachu & the Shapes and the Icelandic postrock band Sigur Rós. [3] In 2009, he worked as a cellist with the South African Mira Calix on a new recording of a song by Boards of Canada for a compilation on Warp Records. This was followed by collaboration with the guitarist Jonny Greenwood for the music to the Paul Thomas Anderson films There Will Be Blood and The Master . He worked with Mica Levi, on the music for the science fiction thriller Under the Skin by Jonathan Glazer and her 2017 album Remain Calm. [4] [5]

Coates also worked with the British rock band Radiohead for their studio album A Moon Shaped Pool, released in 2016. In the same year, he released the album Remain Calm and his solo album entitled "Upstepping" together with Levi. [4] In 2018, Coates released his third solo album with "Shelley's On Zenn-la" (full-length). [6]

He also composed the music for the films Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar with Sam Yates, The Stranger with Thomas M. Wright and Aftersun with Charlotte Wells. He worked with Steve McQueen on his documentary Occupied City. [7]

Coates is the main cellist of the London Contemporary Orchestra and lives in Glasgow, Scotland with his wife, where he also works. [8]

Sheku Kanneh-Mason is a British cellist who won the 2016 BBC Young Musician award. He was the first Black musician to win the competition since its launch in 1978. He played at the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle on the 19th of May, 2018 under the direction of Christopher Warren-Green. Also performing at the wedding was the traditional choir of St. George's Chapel led by James Vivian and a gospel choir conducted by Karen Gibson named, the Kingdom Choir. As of 2021, Kanneh-Mason plays a Matteo Goffriller cello that was made in 1700.

Reassemblage is the second studio album of Portland, Oregon duo Visible Cloaks, consisting of musicians Spencer Doran and Ryan Carlile. The record is named after Trinh T. Minh-ha's 1982 documentary film of the same name, since both works observe its subject matter without showing meaning to it. Reassemblage departs from Doran's past hip-hop releases for a more high-quality style inspired by the works of Japanese synthesizer music acts such as Yellow Magic Orchestra and Ryuichi Sakamoto, all of which were featured on Doran's 2010 mix Fairlights, Mallets & Bamboo.

Lex is a mini-album and partial soundtrack by Portland, Oregon duo Visible Cloaks, consisting of Spencer Doran and Ryan Carlile. Continuing the experimental electronic music stylings and East and West relationship ideas of their previous work Reassemblage (2017), the album takes place in a future utopian world with aliens talking in a hybrid of several languages to the point of speaking a "non-language." The speech sounds on the album were made by Doran feeding dialects and accents to the language translation program Infovox Voice Manager.

Under the Skin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is a 2014 soundtrack album to the 2013 film of the same name. Released digitally on 28 March 2014 by Rough Trade Records, the soundtrack was composed by Mica Levi and produced by Peter Raeburn. The score consists of dark ambient music, primarily written and recorded over a span of 10 months, with the pitch of the score being altered at several intervals for "listeners to make them feel uncomfortable". While the score consisted of viola, several instruments such as strings and percussions were accompanied in the cues. The album was physically released in CDs on 18 April 2014, and a vinyl edition was released on 10 October by Warner Records and Milan Records, which re-issued the album twice: the first re-issue was released on 12 June 2020 by Mondo and a second re-issue is scheduled for release on 8 July 2022 by Juno Records.

<i>Jackie</i> (soundtrack) 2016 film score by Mica Levi

Jackie (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) is the soundtrack to the 2016 film of the same name, released alongside the film on December 2, 2016, by Milan Records. The score is composed by Mica Levi in their second feature film score after Under the Skin (2013). It received nominations for Best Original Score at the 89th Academy Awards and Best Film Music at the 69th British Academy Film Awards, amongst numerous other accolades.
