Sam Yates (born August 1983) [1] [2] is a British director. [3] Yates grew up in Stockport and attended Poynton High School. [3] He was selected as a Screen International Star of Tomorrow, [4] named a rising star in The Observer , [3] and featured in GQ Magazine's "Men of the next 25 years". [5] Yates has been described as "a major talent" [6] in The Guardian , and "a director of unusual flair" [7] in The Observer. He studied Education with English at Homerton College, Cambridge.
Yates directed and co-created VANYA adapted by Simon Stephens and featuring Andrew Scott. The production won multiple awards including the Olivier Award for Best Revival [8] , Best Revival at the What'sOnStage Awards, and Best Actor for Andrew Scott at the Critics' Circle and Evening Standard Awards. The filmed National Theatre Live production, directed by Yates, played in cinemas internationally and took over $2.5million at the box office. [9]
His productions have been nominated for Olivier Awards: Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Murder Ballad (2017), [10] and Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre for The Phlebotomist by Ella Road (2019). [11]
He directed feature debut Magpie featuring Daisy Ridley and Shazad Latif. The film premiered at South by Southwest in 2024. [12]

The Somerset Maugham Award is a British literary prize given each year by the Society of Authors. Set up by William Somerset Maugham in 1947 the awards enable young writers to enrich their work by gaining experience in foreign countries. Chimerica is a 2013 play by the British dramatist Lucy Kirkwood. It draws its title from the term Chimerica, referring to the predominance of China and America in modern geopolitics. Rebecca Frecknall is a British theatre director best known for directing the 2021 West End revival of Cabaret starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley. The show received the 2022 Olivier Award for Best Revival of a Musical, and Frecknall was named Best Director, taking home both the Olivier Award and Critics' Circle Award. She is also associate director at the Almeida Theatre where she directed Summer & Smoke, Three Sisters,The Duchess of Malfi, A Streetcar Named Desire and Romeo and Juliet. Her direction of Summer & Smoke first brought her critical acclaim and showcased her ability to re-invent old works in new ways. The production won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Revival of a Play in 2019, with Frecknall also nominated for the Sir Peter Hall Award for Best Director. In 2023 she was listed by The Stage as the 13th most influential person in the theatre.
Magpie is a 2024 British neo-noir film directed by Sam Yates, starring Daisy Ridley and Shazad Latif. It premiered at the 2024 South by Southwest festival on 9 March 2024.
