Olivia Apps (born December 1, 1998) is a Canadian rugby union and sevens player. [1] Olivia was raised in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada and was introduced to rugby in Grade 10 in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada.
Apps was part of Canada's 2018 Commonwealth Games team that finished in fourth place. [1]
In June 2021, Apps was named to Canada's 2020 Olympic team as an alternate. [2] [3] In September 2021, following the Olympics, she was named Captain of the Canada Women's Sevens national rugby team. [4]
Apps competed for Canada at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town. [5] [6] They placed sixth overall after losing to Fiji in the fifth place final. [7] [8]
On July 8, 2023, she made her test debut for Canada's fifteens team against New Zealand at Ottawa. [9] [10] Her side went down 52–21. [9] [11] On August 23, 2023, she captained the Canadian Women 7s in the Starlight Stadium tournament when they qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics. [12]
Apps was chosen as captain for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. [13] The team won a silver medal, coming from 0-12 behind to defeat Australia 21-12 in the semi-finals, [14] before losing the final to New Zealand. [15] [16] [17]
Apps is the daughter of Alfred Apps and Danielle French. At seven years old, she was diagnosed with alopecia universalis. She began competitive rugby at age 15. [1]
The Canada women's national rugby sevens team was one of six "core teams" that competed in all four rounds of the inaugural World Rugby Women's Sevens Series in 2012–13. Canada competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics and won the bronze medal after defeating Great Britain 33–10. At the 2020 Olympics they failed to medal and finished in 9th place.
