Olivia Whetung is a contemporary artist, printmaker, writer, and member of the Curve Lake First Nation and citizen of the Nishnaabeg Nation. [1] [2]
Whetung completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a minor in Anishinaabemowin at Algoma University. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from the University of British Columbia. [3] [4]
Whetung is known for her use of printmaking, digital media, beadwork, and topographic forms to discuss issues of Indigenous land and food sovereignty, knowledge transfer, language, and environmental stewardship. [5] Whetung has collaborated with Jeneen Frei Njootli on several projects and presentations, and wrote Fugitive Dust to accompany Frei Njootli's solo exhibition, I Can’t Make You Those Mitts Because There Is a Hole in My Heart and My Hands Hurt (2018) at Artspace in Peterborough, Ontario. [6] [7] In 2017, Whetung had a solo exhibition at Artspace called tibewh. [8]
Whetung's work is part of the travelling exhibition, Soundings: An Exhibition in Five Parts. [9] The exhibition was curated by Candice Hopkins and Dylan Robinson. The exhibition asked the question, “how can a score be a call and tool for decolonization?” [10] A cumulative, changing exhibition, Soundings “shifts and evolves, gaining new artists and players in each location.” [11] Soundings was exhibited at the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Gund Gallery at Kenyon College, Agnes Etherington Arts Centre, and Kamloops Art Gallery. In 2019 to 2020, Whetung's solo exhibition, Sugarbush Shrapnel, was shown at the Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia. [14] [15] Whetung considered "her own connections to the complex ecosystem of her home on Chemong Lake, Ontario, particularly the importance of food sovereignty and the fragility of symbiotic relationships in an era of accelerating climate change and environmental destruction.” [15] This exhibition travelled to the Campbell River Art Gallery, from September to November 2020.
Whetung's work was part of the group exhibition, Beads, they’re sewn so tight, which was curated by Beausoleil artist and curator Lisa Myers, and shown at the Textile Museum of Canada and Thunder Bay Art Gallery in September 2019. [1]
In 2020, Whetung was awarded the Ontario Arts Council's Emerging Artist Laureate Award. The Ontario Arts Council's Aboriginal Arts Awards “recognize the achievements of rising Indigenous artists and artistic leaders who have contributed to the arts in Ontario.” [16] [17]
Whetung was the 2018 recipient of the John Hartman Award from the MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie, Ontario. [18]
Germaine Koh is a Malaysian-born and Canadian conceptual artist based in Vancouver. Her works incorporate the artistic styles of neo-conceptual art, minimalism, and environmental art, and is concerned with the significance of everyday actions, familiar objects and common places.
Rebecca Belmore is a Canadian interdisciplinary Anishinaabekwe artist who is notable for politically conscious and socially aware performance and installation work. She is Ojibwe and a member of Obishikokaang. Belmore currently lives in Toronto, Ontario.
The Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Vancouver, British Columbia, on the campus of the University of British Columbia. The gallery is housed in a building designed by architect Peter Cardew which opened in 1995. Cardew received a RAIC gold medal for the building's design in 2012. It houses UBC's growing collection of contemporary art as well as archives containing objects and records related to the history of art in Vancouver.
Judy Chartrand is a Manitoba Cree artist, born in Kamloops BC, Canada. She is an artist who grew up in the Downtown Eastside neighbourhood of Vancouver, British Columbia. Her works frequently confront issues of postcolonialism, Indigenous feminism, socio-economic inequity, and Indigenous knowledge expressed through the mediums of ceramics, found objects, archival photography, and traditional Indigenous techniques of beadwork, moose hair tufting and quillwork.
Tania Willard is an Indigenous Canadian multidisciplinary artist, graphic designer, and curator, known for mixing traditional Indigenous arts practices with contemporary ideas. Willard is from the Secwepemc nation, of the British Columbia interior, Canada.
Lyse Lemieux is a Canadian contemporary visual artist based in Vancouver. She has exhibited nationally and internationally since 1976. Her art practice focuses primarily on drawing, painting and installation work.

Tarah Hogue is a Canadian curator and writer known for her work with Indigenous art. Hogue is of Métis and settler ancestry and resides in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She is the inaugural Curator at Remai Modern.

Susan Blight is an Anishinaabe visual artist, filmmaker, and arts educator from Couchiching First Nation. Her work, especially her public art throughout the city of Toronto, Ontario, often explores themes of "personal and cultural identity and its relationship to space". In 2016, the City of Toronto placed several street signs with Anishinaabe names throughout a neighborhood as a response to the Ogimaa Mikana Project co-founded by Blight.

Dayna Danger is a Two-Spirit/queer, hard femme, Métis/Saulteaux/Polish visual artist. Danger was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Treaty 1 territory, and now resides in Tio'tiá:ke (Montréal). Danger explores various mediums in their creations including sculpture, photography, performance and video. Danger's work explores the relationships between representation, objectification, and empowerment. They also engage with themes of intimacy, gender, sexuality, BDSM, kink, and mixed identities. Danger's artwork from their Big'Uns series was on the front cover of the Summer 2017 Canadian Art Magazine issue. A white male curator once commented that he "could not see himself" in Danger's art, and Danger's response was that "[t]his work is not for you." Later, when Danger's photo from Big'Uns was made the cover of the issue, the editor's letter for the issue was titled "This Work Is Not For You". Collaboration and creating work for underrepresented groups are among Danger's major focuses. Danger uses singular they/them pronouns.
Gabrielle L'Hirondelle Hill is a Cree and Métis multimedia artist and writer, living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Through creating sculptures, collage, and installation works with found objects, she explores and questions the capitalistic treatment of land as an economic capital, which leads the land contamination and violence against people living on the land. As a member of BUSH Gallery, Hill is also involved in group art projects, through which artists embody the indigenous way of knowing and art practice, as a means of decentralizing Eurocentric theorization of art. Hill was longlisted for the 2019 Sobey Art Award.
Anne Riley is an interdisciplinary artist of Slavey Dene and German ancestry. Born in Dallas, Texas, Riley currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada. Several of Riley's works derive from her identity as Indigiqueer, a term coined by Cree artist TJ Cuthand, and commonly used by Indigenous artists including Oji-Cree storyteller, Joshua Whitehead. The term is interconnected with Two-spirit, an identity and role that continues to be vital within and across many Indigenous nations. Through artistic projects, Riley engages Indigenous methodologies that prioritize learning through embodiment, nurturing communities as well as the non-human world. Riley received her BFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2012. Riley is a recipient of the City of Vancouver Studio Award (2018–2021).
Lisa C. Ravensbergen is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer of Ojibwe/Swampy Cree and English/Irish descent, based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ravensbergen is a Jessie-nominated actor, dramaturge, director and dancer. Ravensbergen is an Associate Artist with Full Circle First Nations Performance Group and Playwright-in-Residence with Delinquent Theatre. She holds undergraduate degrees from Trinity Western University and Simon Fraser University and an MA in Cultural Studies from Queens University.
Maggie Groat is an artist and educator who lives in Canada. She received her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Guelph in 2010. Groat has taught at the University of Guelph, University of Toronto, and at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, where she was the Audain Artist Scholar in Residence in 2014.
Greg Staats is a photographer, video, and installation artist, known for examining his Mohawk roots in his work. The landscape images in his photography have symbolism such as his images of the white pine, which was used as a symbol of the unity of the Hodinöhsö:ni' Confederacy. Through his work, he hopes to document a return towards a complete Onkwehón:we neha [our original ways] worldview. In 2024, he was awarded the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts.
