One Too Many is a 2022 Nigerian drama film distributed by Netflix. It was directed by Kayode Kasum, produced by Atinuke Akinde and Joy Grant Ekong, and shot in Ibadan, Nigeria. [1]
Adesuwa came from a poor family. Her father was wrongly shot in the leg by the police, thus created additional expenses for the family. Since the father kept money to pay for Adesuwa's WAEC fee, it then withdrawn him from treating himself. Adesuwa was raped by a police officer when running an errand for her mother, and she became pregnant. She later gave both to a son Otas.
After Otas finished his University education to proceed to his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), his mother was a bit decisive ober him until she changed her mind. Otas went with his best friend Eric, whom he considers a brother. Both had quarreled earlier after Otas saw Eric with his girlfriend. During their journey, both went with the car belonging to Eric, whose father was Senator Makinde. After Otas has called his mother via video call, he unintentionally left his phone while it was recording. He discovered smoking weed and a gun in Eric's car, and immediately asked Eric to pull over the car. As both moved out of the car arguing and struggling over the gun, Eric was shot to death at the spot. There was already a loaded police van packed at the back before the shooting. Two officers handcuffed Otas and took him to the police station.
Adesuwa, who was worried about his son not yet back called his phone number but it wasn't connecting. She later got the information via news report on the television that her son has been arrested. The next day, she went there and pleaded with the deceased father who turned her down. Adesuwa gets a prove from an unknown recording of her brief discussion with DSP Lekan, who as among the people who raped her agreed to it and even threatened to arrest her since he claims to be the law; those Adesuwa revealed in a viral live video blog she made. The police man was arrested and the charge on Otas was withdrawn by the prosecutor, Eric's father Senator Makinde. It was after releasing the video he recorded with his phone and stored in his girlfriend's cloud was shown to the court indicating that the deceased was shot at the back. It uncreated a sense of a wake keep call as the media shows many people reacting to the live video as well as many reportage of other people opening up. Senator Makinde called Otas for a dinner, where he will also Otas will also dedicate a website he made for his deceased friend Eric.
One Too Many was written by Ginika Ozioko and Jeanine Okafor. It was shot in Ibadan and some part of the University of Ibadan. The film concluded its principal photography in 2021, and Adeoluwa Owu the cinematographer. [2]
One Too Many was screened during the Africa International Film Festival in 2022. [2] It was rated 2.5/5 by Afrocritik 's Seyi Lasisi, who thought the film's attempt to address the Nigerian criminal justice system was "commendable" but ultimately lacking. [3] Nollywood Reinvented 's Kolapo Mustapha said in a review that "Kayode Kasum's direction of One Too Many showcased promising elements for a compelling narrative but ultimately faltered in execution." [4] Business Day 's Linda Ochugbua thought it "was a very sweet and touching Nigerian story". [5]
