Data Protector software (originally Omniback) is automated backup and recovery software for single-server to large hybrid enterprise environments, supporting disk storage, tape and cloud storage targets. It provides cross-platform, online backup of data for Microsoft Windows, Unix, and Linux operating systems. The last version to use the OmniBack name was version 4.1, which was retired in 2004. [1]

History

When Hewlett-Packard acquired Apollo Computer in 1989, the latter had already developed a backup system entitled the "OmniBack Network Backup System," which was available on the market at the time. [2] HP continued [3] to develop this product under the "OmniBack" name for the purpose of backing up individual files and raw disk partitions. A related but distinct product "OmniBack/Turbo" was developed for backing up databases. [4]

In 1996 HP released OmniBack II 2.0 and merged OmniBack II and OmniBack/Turbo into a single product, although it was still impossible to create a single job which would contain a database and a file system backup. It was offered for $3,800. [5] A Windows NT port was released with version 2.3. [6] Version 2.55 was released in 1997 and included support for HP-UX and IBM AIX. [7]

With version 5.0, the OmniBack name was dropped. Since then, the product has been called HP Openview Storage Data Protector and HP StorageWorks Data Protector, [8] or commonly just HP Data Protector.

HP announced the release of HP Data Protector 9.0 (as a part of its Adaptive Backup & Recovery initiative) in May 2014. It was released in July 2014 along with two companion products: HP Data Protector Management Pack and HP Backup Navigator. [9]

Micro Focus acquired HPE Software in 2017, and was renamed Micro Focus Data Protector. [10] In 2022 a family member called Data Protector for Cloud Workloads (DP4CW) was added to the Suite addressing protection of cloud native applications like M365 but also various hypervisors like OpenShift, KVM, Nutanix, ProxMox and Kubernetes.

OpenText acquired Micro Focus in 2023, and was renamed OpenText Data Protector. [11] With DP Version 24.1 additional security features like Multi-Factor Authentication and Anomaly Detection have been added.

Today's version of Data Protector provides full backwards compatibility with its predecessors.

HP Software became part of HPE after the HP/HPE split and HPE Software was eventually sold to MicroFocus.

Veritas Backup Exec is a data protection software product designed for customers with mixed physical and virtual environments, and who are moving to public cloud services. Supported platforms include VMware and Hyper-V virtualization, Windows and Linux operating systems, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Storage, among others. All management and configuration operations are performed with a single user interface. Backup Exec also provides integrated deduplication, replication, and disaster recovery capabilities and helps to manage multiple backup servers or multi-drive tape loaders.

Catalogic DPX is an enterprise-level data protection tool that backs up and restores data and applications for a variety of operating systems. It has data protection, disaster recovery and business continuity planning capabilities. Catalogic DPX protects physical servers or virtual machines on VMWare vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisors, supports many database applications, including Oracle, SQL Server, SharePoint, Exchange, and SAP HANA. DPX supports agent-based or agent-less backups. Users can map to and use a backed up version of the database if something goes wrong with the primary version. DPX is managed from a single console and catalog. This allows for centralized control of both tape-based and disk-based data protection jobs across heterogeneous operating systems. DPX can protect data centers, remote sites and supports recovery from DR. DPX can protect data to disk, tape or cloud. It is used for various recovery use cases including file, application, BMR, VM or DR. DPX can spin up VMs from backup images, recover physical servers, bring up applications online from snapshot based backups, it can be used to recover from Ransomware.

OpenText Quality Center, formerly known as Micro Focus Quality Center and HP Quality Center is a quality management software offered by OpenText who acquired Micro Focus in 2023[8]. Micro Focus acquired the software division of Hewlett Packard Enterprise in 2017, with many capabilities acquired from Mercury Interactive Corporation. Quality Center offers software quality assurance, including requirements management, test management and business process testing for IT and application environments. Quality Center is a component of the Micro Focus Application Lifecycle Management software set.

Commvault is an American publicly traded data protection and data management software company headquartered in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. Commvault enterprise software can be used for data backup and recovery, cloud and infrastructure management, retention and compliance.

Veeam Software was co-founded by Ratmir Timashev and Andrei Baronov and is now a privately held US-based information technology company owned by Insight Partners that develops backup, disaster recovery and modern data protection software for virtual, cloud-native, SaaS, Kubernetes and physical workloads. While Veeam's start was built on protecting data across virtualized workloads, it has significantly expanded to protect data across a wide variety of platforms from AWS, Azure, google Cloud, Microsoft 365, Kubernetes etc. Veeam's current CEO, Anand Eswaran, has been pushing Veeam's strategy to accelerate share in the enterprise with adding several layers to Veeam's partnerships. Veeam took over the #1 market share in the data protection category in 2H'22. The company headquarters is in Columbus, Ohio, United States.
