The Oregon Islamic Academy is an Islamic based, private sixth through twelfth grade school in Tigard, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Muslim Educational Trust (MET) which is divided into a community outreach committee, a pre-kindergarten through fifth grade named the Islamic School of the Muslim Educational Trust (ISMET). The Oregon Islamic Academy (OIA) holds classes for those students in grades six through twelve.

Islam is an Abrahamic monotheistic religion teaching that there is only one God, and that Muhammad is the messenger of God. It is the world's second-largest religion with over 1.8 billion followers or 24% of the world's population, most commonly known as Muslims. Muslims make up a majority of the population in 50 countries. Islam teaches that God is merciful, all-powerful, and unique, and has guided humankind through prophets, revealed scriptures and natural signs. The primary scriptures of Islam are the Quran, viewed by Muslims as the verbatim word of God, and the teachings and normative examples of Muhammad.

Interstate 5 and Oregon Route 217 are the main freeways in the city, with Oregon Route 99W and Oregon Route 210 serving as other major highways. Public transit service is provided by TriMet, via several bus routes and the WES Commuter Rail line.

History

The Muslim Educational Trust was founded in 1993 by Wajdi Said, Gail Ramjan, and Ayoob Ramjan.[ citation needed ] In 1997, the trust opened an Islamic-based school in Tigard. [1] By 2006 the school had grown to 89 students at its campus near Washington Square, all in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. [2] The next school year, the school had grown to 125 students, and had 16 teachers. [2]

In September 2007, the Oregon Islamic Academy opened as the high school for the educational group with a class of six students, and was the first Islamic high school to open in the Northwestern United States. [2] A seventh grade student at the school won the poster contest held by the Human Rights Council of Washington County in 2010. [3] Following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, seven students at the academy traveled to Japan to assist in the recovery. [4] The Oregon Islamic Academy graduated its first high school class in June 2011, with two students earning their diplomas. [1]

The Japanese School of Detroit (JSD) is a Saturday-only Japanese supplementary educational school in Metro Detroit. It is often called "Ringo Kai." As of December 2011 it has almost 800 students. The school office is located in Novi Meadows Elementary School, which is the class location of the preschool and elementary school levels. Middle and high school classes are held at Novi High School.

Portland Japanese School is a Japanese weekend supplementary school located in the Portland metropolitan area. The school has its office in Park Plaza West in Beaverton, and its classes are held at Hazelbrook Middle School in Tualatin. The Japanese Business Association of Portland, also known as the "Shokookai," oversees the school, which serves levels PK through 12.

Broadway Rose Theatre Company

Broadway Rose Theatre Company is a professional musical theatre company based in Tigard, Oregon. Founded in 1991, the company produces six mainstage productions, two children's musicals, and a teen workshop production each year. Their home theater is The New Stage, a 270-seat venue, with their summer season playing at Deb Fennell Auditorium, a 600-seat auditorium at Tigard High School. Broadway Rose Theatre Company is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
