Outside Inc., formerly called Pocket Outdoor Media until February 2021, is an American company focused on sports and recreation (especially outdoor sports), fitness and nutrition. It has various ventures such as Outside magazine, Outside TV, the Gaia GPS and Trailforks trail mapping apps, Climbing magazine, Peloton magazine, Rock & Ice magazine, Women's Running magazine and Yoga Journal . The company is headquartered in Boulder, Colorado.

Overview and history

As Pocket Outdoor Media, the company received Series A venture capital financing from Jazz Venture Partners, Next Ventures, and Zone 5 Ventures, and announced the funding together with the acquisition of three divisions of Active Interest Media in June 2020. [1]

In February 2021, Pocket Outdoor Media acquired Outside Integrated Media and renamed itself to Outside, Inc. [2]

Xumo, LLC is an American internet television and consumer electronics company. It is a joint venture of Charter Communications and Comcast that operates the free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) and advertising video on demand (AVOD) service Xumo Play, and distributes Xumo Stream Box digital media players and Xumo TV smart TVs. The Xumo Play platform's service operations are based in the Greater Los Angeles suburb of Irvine, California. As of October 2020, Xumo Play has 24 million monthly active users.

According to the publisher it was created "to serve a rapidly growing community of female runners".

Altra Running, commonly known as Altra, is an American manufacturing company engaged in the design, development, marketing, and sales of athletic shoes for road running, trail running, and general footwear. Since 2018 Altra is owned by VF Corporation, an American global apparel and footwear company with other brands like Icebreaker, The North Face, Vans, JanSport, Eastpak and Timberland.

<i>VeloNews</i> American cycling magazine

VeloNews was an American cycling magazine headquartered in Boulder, Colorado dedicated to the sport of cycling. After 50 years of leading cycling journalism in the United States, VeloNews was purchased by Outside Inc. in early 2021. Months later, another major U.S. road cycling publication, Cycling Tips, was acquired in July 2021. Soon after acquisition, however, CEO Robin Thurston refocused Outside Inc's business model, stating in April 2022 that "Outside's future is in NFTs." The NFT marketplace crashed within six months. In a letter to staff on November 15, announcing layoffs, Thurston stated that "The fundamentals of our business are sound," but "economic headwinds that every media and technology business is facing have only intensified." On June 1, 2023, VeloNews.com quietly closed as the URL stopped directing to the dedicated VeloNews homepage.

Mountain Project is a website that serves as a guidebook to more than 300,000 climbing routes across the world. The website is operated by Adventure Projects Inc., a Boulder, Colorado-based company, founded by Nick Wilder and Andy Laakmann in 2005 and purchased on June 11, 2015 by REI. Adventure Projects, Inc. subsequently became independent and has since been acquired by onX.
