Overlake is a shoegaze and indie rock trio from Jersey City, New Jersey.
Overlake formed in 2012, when guitarist and vocalist Tom Barrett and bassist and vocalist Lysa Opfer, who were playing in another group, became friends over their mutual interest in 1990s bands, and decided to collaborate. [1] [2] Drummer Scotty Imp soon joined the duo to complete Overlake. Their music draws comparison to the bands My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive. [1] In 2014, Overlake signed with the record label Killing Horse Records.
Overlake released their debut album Sighs on compact disc and digital download on April 15, 2014, via Killing Horse Records. [2] [3] They performed at the 2014 South by Southwest music festival. [4] Drummer Nick D'Amore joined the band three years later in 2015.[ citation needed ] They released "Travelogue" as a single on 7"-vinyl on October 30, 2015, also via the record label Killing Horse Records, and toured the South and Midwest of the United States extensively throughout 2016. [5] The single was recorded and Mixed by Tom Beaujour at Nuthouse Recording in Hoboken, New Jersey in January 2015, and mastered by Joe Lambert at JLM Mastering in Jersey City, New Jersey.
After seeing a few Overlake concerts, Bar/None Records label owner Glenn Morrow signed them, in late 2016. [6] Their second studio album Fall was released on compact disc and digital download on May 12, 2017, via Bar/None Records. [7] Speaking about the album, Barrett said "I like that it's only eight songs because there are a couple of epics on it." [6] The album was listed as a local worthy album in PopMatters ' The Best Shoegaze and Dream Pop of 2017. [8] In 2017, Overlake opened for the Brian Jonestown Massacre at Union Transfer in Philadelphia. [9]
Shoegaze is a subgenre of indie and alternative rock characterized by its ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortion and effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume. It emerged in Ireland and the United Kingdom in the late 1980s among neo-psychedelic groups who usually stood motionless during live performances in a detached, non-confrontational state. The name comes from the heavy use of effects pedals, as the performers were often looking down at their pedals during concerts.

Dream pop is a subgenre of alternative rock and neo-psychedelia that emphasizes atmosphere and sonic texture as much as pop melody. Common characteristics include breathy vocals, dense productions, and effects such as reverb, echo, tremolo, and chorus. It often overlaps with the related genre of shoegaze, and the two genre terms have at times been used interchangeably.
The Dandy Warhols are an American psychedelic/alternative rock band, formed in Portland, Oregon, in 1994 by singer-guitarist Courtney Taylor-Taylor and guitarist Peter Holmström. They were later joined by keyboardist Zia McCabe and drummer Eric Hedford. Hedford left in 1998 and was replaced by Taylor-Taylor's cousin Brent DeBoer. Take It from the Man! is the third studio album by American psychedelic rock band the Brian Jonestown Massacre. After recording their shoegaze-influenced debut album Methodrone (1995) and releasing a collection of early recordings, Spacegirl & Other Favorites, the band took influence from 1960s British psychedelic garage rock and recorded Take it from the Man! from November 1995–February 1996. After recording the entire album with an unnamed producer who scrapped the recordings, the band re-recorded the album on a minimal budget, mostly at Lifesource Studios in Emeryville, California with production from Psychic TV's Larry Thrasher, whose usual "studio" approach was vetoed out by the band's back-to-basics approach.
