Van Pelt played college football at Michigan State and Colorado State.

Brad Alan Van Pelt was an American football linebacker who played for 14 seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Michigan State Spartans, where he won the Maxwell Award in 1972. He was selected by the New York Giants, earning five Pro Bowl selections during his ten years with the team. He rounded out his career with the Los Angeles Raiders from 1984 to 1985 and the Cleveland Browns in 1986.

James Sutton Van Pelt was an American professional football player who was a quarterback for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played college football for the Michigan Wolverines from 1955 to 1957. Playing in the CFL in 1958 and 1959, he led the Blue Bombers to consecutive Grey Cup championships and set league records with seven touchdown passes in a game, a 107-yard touchdown pass, and 22 points scored in the 1958 Grey Cup championship game.
