Anthony Jenkins, better known as P.D.A. is an American pop/hip hop artist and producer from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The name P.D.A. stands for Public Display of Afflection (Afflection being a hybrid of the words Affliction and Affection for what he states as a "the struggle between love and hate"). [1] He has been named one of Tulsa's Most Influential People in 2007, [2] 2008, [3] and 2010 [4]

Early life

P.D.A. started his music career early. He began singing in school choirs and at the age of 11 he joined the Tulsa Youth Opera and performed in off broadway musicals such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He then turned to hip hop music at the age of 13 and released his first album "Prologue" at the age of 18. He interned at a local recording studio (Big Wolf Entertainment) where he learned the basics of studio recording and there he worked on his second album Act I – The Next Concept that was released later in his career due to artistic complications. He soon left Big Wolf Entertainment and started his own home studio under the name Squaresoft Productions (no relation to the video game company) and began work on his next album. [5]

Music career

Act II – A Different Victim

He began work on Act II in the summer of 2006 and released the album in February 2007 after signing with the independent label Fat Lip Entertainment. The album consists of 17 songs and features samples from a wide range of different artists such as White Zombie, Melanie Safka, Diana Ross and the Supremes, as well as samples from the video game soundtracks of Um Jammer Lammy and Resident Evil 4. Act II also contains a remade version of Madonna's song "Human Nature". P.D.A. produced, recorded and mixed the entire album himself at his home studio. [6] Act II – A Different Victim released to regional acclaim landing P.D.A. three of Tulsa World's Spot Music Awards for Album of the Year, and Best Hip-Hop Artist 2 years in a row [7] [8] and was nominated for an ABOT award for Best Locally Produced, Independent Album, but lost to a pre-fame David Cook. [9] The album also helped him land the cover of Urban Tulsa, a popular publication in Tulsa. [6] The local success of the album provoked a solid 2 years of national tours and eventually led to being featured in SPIN Magazine [10] and Oklahoma Magazine [11] and opening for acts such as Akon, Jeffery Star, Millionaires (group), and Critical Bill. [12] In 2010 Act II was named No. 61 in Oklahoma Rock's 100 Greatest Albums of the 2000s. [13] The album features artists Alex Cartwright, [14] Philippian, Coco Jones, Big Hank, Jaquay, Infamous, Trauma, Tristan, and Kawnar. [15]

A Hard Weeks Night

In January 2009 P.D.A. teamed up with fellow artist and friend Kawnar to recreate select songs from The Beatles catalog. [16] The idea was to transform classic Beatles songs into hip-hop / pop music and get it done, start to finish, in one week with production by both P.D.A. and Kawnar. [17] Prior to its release the pair released 4 videos documenting the week they worked on the project and the album was released for free in March 2009. [18] "A Hard Weeks Night" was nominated at the ABOT's for Best Album. [19]

Act III – Wasted Talent

Act III – Wasted Talent was released in September 2009. The 12 track concept album contains completely original material and tells the story of the frustrations and life of a "starving artist" and the hard road to fame through narration by P.D.A.. "Wasted Talent" is completely produced and written by P.D.A. and recorded by Connor "Kawnar" McFarland. The album features artists Co2, Trauma, Hatch, XV, Brandon Davis, and X-Cal. [12]

InterMission

On May 17, 2011, P.D.A. released his first official mixtape #InterMission. [20] #InterMission features production from The Lost Jackson, Yuta Nakano, and Chris Cutta, along with features from Infamous, RonRon, Josh Sallee, and Navigator. It features samples from Ayumi Hamasaki, Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, The Fresh Prince, Willie Hutch, Private, Tom Waits, Adam Sandler, The Monkees, Chris Gaines and Yeong-wook Jo. [21]

Occupy Hollywood

P.D.A. released his second mixtape "Occupy Hollywood" on January 1, 2012. [22] He explained that Occupy Hollywood was inspired by ".. Disneyland. As strange as that sounds. I wanted the album to be a short fun ride. Disneyland was always an escape from life and I wanted this album to be like that. I had a lot of fun ideas for songs at the time and I just wanted to share them with people. There’s nothing serious about Occupy Hollywood. Even though the name seems political, it isn’t. I just wanted to make fun music and let people have fun listening to it." he also states that "..Occupy Hollywood may seem like it was influenced by LA Life, but the 'Hollywood' in the title is more influenced by movies than the actual experience of living there." Swizz Beatz American record producer, rapper, and DJ from New York

Kasseem Daoud Dean, known professionally as Swizz Beatz, is an American record producer, rapper, record executive, and businessman. Born and raised in New York City, Dean embarked on his musical career as a DJ. At the age of 18, he started to gain recognition in the hip hop industry through his family's record label, Ruff Ryders, as well as his friendship and work with East Coast rapper DMX. Full Surface is a record label founded in 2001, by American hip hop recording artist and record producer Kasseem "Swizz Beatz" Dean. With the help of his protégé, Cassidy, who was the 1st artist signed, the label was established. The label used to operate through Sony's J and through Universal's Interscope, Motown and Universal Motown. However, the label also had released material through joint ventures with other companies outside the Sony BMG group. It operates as a subsidiary of Warner and is distributed by Atlantic.

Nappy Roots American alternative rap band

Nappy Roots is an American alternative Southern rap group. The group met in Bowling Green, Kentucky in 1995 while attending Western Kentucky University. They are best known for their hit singles "Po' Folks", "Awnaw", "Roun' The Globe" and "Good Day". They were the best selling hip hop group of 2002. The group consists of Milledgeville, Georgia native Fish Scales and Kentucky natives Skinny DeVille, B. Stille and Ron Clutch.

Daniel O'Connor, better known as Danny Boy or Danny Boy O'Connor, is an American rapper, art director, and the executive director of The Outsiders House Museum. O'Connor spent his childhood in New York, before moving to Los Angeles in the 1980s. In the 1990s, O'Connor co-founded the rap group House of Pain, with fellow rapper Erik Schrody (Everlast) and DJ Leor Diamant. Based on their cultural heritage they fashioned themselves as rowdy Irish-American hooligans. O'Connor played the role of art director, designing logos, branding, hype man, and co-rapper. In 1992, with the singles "Jump Around" and "Shamrock and Shenanigans", their self-titled debut album, also known as Fine Malt Lyrics, went platinum.

Christian J. Ward, professionally known under the pseudonym Hitmaka, is an American musician from Chicago, Illinois. Perhaps best known originally as a rapper, Ward is also a credited songwriter and actor. In his later career he has become better known as a noted record producer and music executive in the hip hop industry. Ward is currently the vice president of A&R at Atlantic Records.

Wale (rapper) Nigerian American rapper from Washington, D.C.

Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, better known by his stage name Wale, is a Nigerian-American rapper. He first rose to prominence in 2006, when his song "Dig Dug " became popular in his hometown. Wale became locally recognized and continued recording music for the regional audience. Wale met English DJ-producer Mark Ronson in 2006 and joined his label, Allido Records in 2007. While signed to that label, Wale released several mixtapes and appeared in national media including MTV and various Black American-focused magazines. A song called "Ridin' in That Black Joint" was featured in the popular video game Saints Row 2's soundtrack in 2008.

DeAndre Cortez Way, known professionally as Soulja Boy, is an American rapper and record producer. In September 2007, his debut single "Crank That " peaked at number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. The single was initially self-published to the internet, and later became a number-one hit in the United States for seven non-consecutive weeks starting in September 2007. On August 17, Way was listed at number 18 on the Forbes list of Hip-Hop Cash Kings of 2010 for earning $7 million that year.

Kid Cudi American rapper (born 1984)

Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi, known professionally as Kid Cudi, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor. He has widely been recognized as an influence on several contemporary hip hop and alternative acts. His lyrics are often autobiographical and describe his childhood hardships of depression, loneliness and alienation, his struggle with alcohol and drugs into adulthood, as well as themes of spirituality, heartbreak, dissipation and celebration. Cudi began to gain major recognition following the release of his first official full-length project, a mixtape titled A Kid Named Cudi (2008), which would go on to catch the attention of high-profile music producer Kanye West, who subsequently signed Cudi to his GOOD Music label imprint by late 2008.

Alex Julius Kwesigabo, better known by his stage name Flex D'Paper, is a Ugandan rapper and songwriter born and raised in Kampala. Starting off his music career, Flex D'Paper was part of the high school rap group, The Rapaholix, which he started with friends, Dasper Cosine and later joined by Apass as an affiliate with whom the trio put out a mix tape, The Eviction Notice that included chart topping singles like "Burning", "Party Life" and "Follow Me" which topped countdowns in Uganda such as NTV and Sanyu FM. Run-DMC American hip hop group

Run-DMC was an American hip hop group from Hollis, Queens, New York City, founded in 1983 by Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels, and Jason Mizell. Run-DMC is regarded as one of the most influential acts in the history of hip hop culture and one of the most famous hip hop acts of the 1980s. Along with Beastie Boys, LL Cool J and Public Enemy, the group pioneered new school hip hop music. The group was among the first to highlight the importance of the MC and DJ relationship.

Fire in Little Africa is a music and multimedia project coinciding with the 100-year anniversary of the Tulsa Race Massacre. The project is made up of more than fifty rappers, singers, producers, and creatives based in the state of Oklahoma and was partially recorded in Tulsa’s Skyline Mansion, a former home to Tulsa Ku Klux Klan leader W. Tate Brady. Along with a hip-hop album, the project is also producing a series of podcasts anticipating the release and a documentary on the creation of the project to be released after the album.
