Patrick Joseph "P.J." McDonald (born 1982) is a Group One winning Irish jockey and President (Flat) of the Professional Jockeys' Association.
McDonald was born in County Wexford and started to ride ponies as a child at his grandmother's cottage. [1]
Having been taught to ride horses by Dusty Sheehy, McDonald began his career as a jump jockey, with Padge Berry mentoring him as a point-to-point rider. However, he only won 3 out of 70 races in his first four years racing under rules as a rider for trainer Charles O'Brien and considered giving up. He was then persuaded to move to England by an ex-jockey and friend, Michael Cleary, to save his career. [2]
In England, he rode for Ferdy Murphy, for whom he won the Scottish Grand National on Hot Weld in 2007. [3] McDonald credits Murphy for helping his development as a jockey: '[He] gave me the confidence, he gave me the platform and he guided me the right way'. [2] Murphy persuaded McDonald to spend a summer flat racing as a means of keeping fit, although finding he felt healthier for it, he continued under that code, with a caveat that he could return to Murphy if he liked. Progressing slowly, his first major success as a flat jockey was winning the 2016 Yorkshire Cup on Clever Cookie, deputising for Danny Tudhope who has been injured in a fall the previous day. The following year at York he also won the Lonsdale Cup on Montaly, trained by Andrew Balding. [3] Also in 2017, he won two Group races on Havana Grey - the National Stakes at Sandown Park and the Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
His most famous connection, however, is with the Karl Burke-trained Laurens who was runner-up in the 2018 1,000 Guineas, before winning two French Group Ones - the Prix Saint-Alary and Prix de Diane. However, after being thrown from a horse in the parade ring at Newcastle, he fractured his heel and ankle, and missed several weeks of the season during which Laurens won two late season Group Ones under Tudhope. [4] Returning to ride Laurens in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot Champions Day, he finished 8th behind Roaring Lion, but would win another Group One, the Prix Rothschild in July 2019. [5]
In July 2022 McDonald picked up a spare ride on 18/1 outsider Pyledriver, trained by William Muir and Chris Grassick, in the Group One King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. Pyledriver's regular jockey, Martin Dwyer was injured and Frankie Dettori, who had ridden him in his previous two starts, was on the more-fancied Emily Upjohn. McDonald had ridden Pyledriver as a two-year-old, winning the Ascendant Stakes. Pyledriver defied his odds to win the Ascot race by nearly three lengths from Torquator Tasso. [6] Since Dwyer had retired, McDonald retained the ride on Pyledriver when he returned to racecourse for the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot on 24 June 2023. Pyledriver won by just over a length and survived a stewards' inquiry, with McDonald receiving a three-day ban for careless riding. [7]
He is retained jockey to Laurens' owner John Dance and rides most regularly for trainer Karl Burke. He also rides for Mark Johnston. He has been the Professional Jockeys' Association's safety officer in the North since 2010 and in July 2018 was appointed Flat President of the PJA, replacing Steve Drowne. [1]
McDonald lives in Leyburn, North Yorkshire and is married to Abby, who he met at Ferdy Murphy's stables. They have two daughters - Amelia and Lavinia. [1]

Johnny Murtagh is an Irish flat racing trainer and former jockey from Bohermeen, near Navan, Kells, County Meath. As a jockey he won many of the major flat races in Europe, including all the Irish Classics, all the Group 1 Races at Royal Ascot, The Derby, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes and Europe's biggest race the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. He was also Irish flat racing Champion Jockey five times. As a trainer, based at stables near Kildare, he has saddled a winner at Royal Ascot and an Irish Classic winner.
Graham Lee is a successful Irish jockey, operating in Great Britain and Ireland. He was initially a National Hunt jockey, but changed codes mid-career and now operates as a flat jockey.
Christophe Patrice Lemaire is a French-born jockey. He has enjoyed much of his success on the Japanese flat racing circuit, with the most wins at Japan Racing Association racetracks for five consecutive years since 2017.
Ryan Lee Moore is an English flat racing jockey, who was Champion Jockey in 2006, 2008 and 2009. He is currently the first choice jockey for Aidan O'Brien's Ballydoyle operation, a role in which he mainly rides horses owned by Coolmore Stud. He also sometimes rides horses for Juddmonte and The Queen. As of 2023, Moore has ridden over 170 Group or Grade 1 winners internationally. He has the most British Group & Listed wins of any active jockey.
Richard Hughes is a retired Irish jockey and current racehorse trainer who is based at Lambourn in Berkshire, England. Born in Dublin, he is the son of successful National Hunt trainer, Dessie Hughes. Hughes became British flat racing Champion Jockey in 2012 and retained that title in 2013, when he rode more than 200 winners in the season, and again in 2014.
John Harry Martin Gosden is a British racehorse trainer. He has trained over 3,000 winners worldwide, including winners of the Breeders' Cup Classic, the Derby, the Arc, the King George, the Eclipse. He has over 600 winners in the United States.
Colm O'Donoghue is a multiple Group 1 and Classic winning flat jockey. For most of his career, he was based at the Ballydoyle racing stables in Rosegreen, Cashel, County Tipperary.

William Buick is a Norwegian-British flat jockey. He shared the champion apprentice jockey title in 2008 with David Probert and won the Lester Award for Apprentice Jockey of the Year in 2007 and 2008. From 2010 to 2014 he was stable jockey to John Gosden. In 2015 he signed with Godolphin. Buick won his first Group1 race in Canada in 2010 and since then has won Group 1 races in England, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. He has won four British Classic Races: the St Leger in 2010, 2011 and 2021 and the Derby in 2018.

Silvestre de Sousa is a Brazilian flat racing jockey based in Britain. He was champion jockey of Britain in 2015, with 132 winners, and again in 2017 and 2018.
Richard Fahey is a racehorse trainer, based in Malton, North Yorkshire. He has saddled over 60 Group race and Listed winners in the UK, Ireland, France and Canada. Group 1 winners include Perfect Power in the 2022 Commonwealth Cup and 2021 Prix Morny, and the Middle Park Stakes, Sands Of Mali in the 2018 British Champions Sprint Stakes and Ribchester in the 2017 Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot. Garswood in the 2014 Prix Maurice de Gheest, Mayson in the 2012 Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket and Wootton Bassett in the 2010 Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère at Longchamp. In 2015 Fahey equalled the record for the most calendar wins with 235. He ended 2017 with prize money of over £4.2m and 2018 he finished the season with 190 winners. Laurens is a French-bred British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. In a career running from July 2017 to October 2019 she ran 17 times, winning eight races, including six at the highest Group 1 level. In 2017 she won a minor event on her racecourse debut and then finished second to Polydream in the Prix du Calvados before her victories in the May Hill Stakes and Fillies' Mile. In the following year she ran second to Billesdon Brook in the 1000 Guineas and then embarked on a successful campaign in her native France, taking both the Prix Saint-Alary and the Prix de Diane. When tried over one and a half miles she failed to stay the distance in the Yorkshire Oaks but when brought back to one mile she upset Alpha Centauri in the Matron Stakes and then added a fifth Group 1 success when taking the Sun Chariot Stakes. In 2019 she continued to compete at the highest level, adding a further Group 1 win in France in the Prix Rothschild before being retired at the end of the season.
Coronet is a British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2016 she won both of her races including the Listed Zetland Stakes. In the following year her only win came in the Ribblesdale Stakes but she also finished second in the Yorkshire Oaks, third in the Prix Saint-Alary and the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes and fourth in the Irish Oaks. As a four-year-old she won the Middleton Stakes and was placed in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, Yorkshire Oaks, British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. She had her greatest success as a five-year-old when she recorded Group 1 victories in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Prix Jean Romanet.
Joseph Kevin Fanning is a Group 1 winning Irish jockey. He has won races at every flat racecourse in Great Britain and has twice been All-Weather Champion Jockey. Since the 1990s, he has been stable jockey to Mark Johnston, for whom he has won most of his races.
Pyledriver is a British Thoroughbred racehorse. After showing promise as a two-year-old in 2019, when he won two of four races including the Listed Ascendant Stakes, he improved in the following year to become a top-class middle-distance performer, winning the King Edward VII Stakes and the Great Voltigeur Stakes as well as finishing third in the St Leger. In 2021 he recorded his first Group 1 victory in the Coronation Cup. In 2022 he registered an upset victory the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. He was ridden in fourteen of his first fifteen starts by Martin Dwyer.
